I'm thinking of getting a Big Muff Pi USA

Any thoughts? Apparently it is used on Young Lust by Pink Floyd and Who's That Lady by the Isley Brothers'. Those two songs have great sound in my opinion.

This would be my first pedal. It does look a little expensive imo. (But what do I know, I've never gotten a pedal before.)

What do you guys think of the ESP LTD F50?

I'm trying to find a decent metal axe to complement my Fender Standard Stratocaster, and I absolutely love the shape.
Will that baby do, if I decide to slap on some EMGs somewhere down the line?

I think buying a cheap guitar and trying to make it a good guitar by putting in EMGs doesnt work!
What is most important about the guitar (imo) is how it plays. If you want to invest 200-300, you can't expect to get a great guitar. The money you have to invest to put in EMGs (EMGs, Pots, etc...) is better spent on a better guitar imo.

That's probably not what you want to hear but experience shows that buying cheap = buying twice.

Keep that in mind and also, dont buy because of the shape of a guitar. Durability, Playability and sound are way more important.

Yeah i agree, you need at least a basic level of quality in a guitar as it's not only about what pickups you use.

That said, LTD's from the 250 series upwards are actually pretty good instruments imo.

Nice cover!
What exact model is your guitar? Are you playing through an AXE FX?

From my professor of guitar, get an old pocket knife, you'll look more badass.

Hey guys, I just did a cover of Dream Theater's Innocence Faded outro solo:

Not the best cover on Youtube, and I admit I made some parts easier by not using strict alternate picking for some runs (which Petrucci probably does). A huge milestone for me though, this is the first DT solo I've managed to finish. Comments are appreciated!

Before I started playing guitar I thought it was (basically) just playing the right notes at the right times, but I'm starting to realise more and more how much there is. Chords (with adds, sus's, 7s, 9s, 2s and god knows what else), all able to be played in different positions in different ways with different fingerings. A huge amount of scales. Nodes. Not to mention combining them any one of infinite ways to make a song. How do you guys remember all that? I realise I should just keep it small for now and practice a little at a time but quite frankly I'm overwhelmed. Even if I had all that knowledge about the guitar, there's also this matter of synchronizing two hands which do different things, at a speed I'm having trouble following with my eyes for some guitar players. Oh, did I mention you pretty much do it blindly, while counting beats and measures and if you're an actual musician singing and improvizing too. Are guitar players super humans or what? I felt intimidated by the amount of stuff to learn while studying physics but this seems on a whole other level lol.

As a new player I see the benefit to alternate picking, but why would it be a problem if you don't strictly alternate pick? How would you benefit from doing it the harder way if that doesn't give you any actual benefit (apart from practice?). Serious question btw, not being an asshole.

Start off with basic things. If scales overwhelm you, just do pentatonics to start. From there on, you can start adding more and more complexity as you (slowly) learn and become comfortable with new techniques and notions.

Same goes with chords: start off with open/barre/power chords, then add 7ths, sus/add chords, etc etc.

Generally just take it slowly.

An actual Lap Steel? Or just slide on a regular steel string? Either or, I recommend getting familiar with open tunings like Open D (DADF#AD) or open G (DGDGBD) as the shape of the slide itself limits the note combinations you can create so understanding your tunings and the notes you are playing is very important. Check out some music that incorporates Slide to get a feeling as to how you can move the slide to get certain sounds. Wilco is a great rock/alt country band with lot's of slide in their music. + Show Spoiler +

Thanks for the answer! I meant a regular guitar (acoustic in my case). I'm thinking about tuning mine EADGBD so it's partially open G and partially standard, and i can get a best of both worlds kind of thing.

Any particular exercises or general things i should work on?

Ya dropping that high E to D is a good choice, makes it really easy to play nice twangy melodies. I'd recommend just familiarizing yourself with how to hold the slide to get the best sound (google images), and really just fool around a bunch to find out how to get the sounds you want. It's not a far departure from regular playing once you are comfortable moving the slide around.Good luck! The world needs more slide players

Also just regular folk fingerpicking patterns can be useful when playing slide!

I learned different picking rythims just trying to play the songs i like. I realised this after i have somewhat learned them, i really mostly play on my own or accompany someone.
You have to listen to music you like and want to play and try to emulate it. If you see rock is very downwords picking only. On the reggae you can strum d/u/d and then mute it, if you play by yourself, or play only the downs or ups as is most roots reggae. But it really comes down to what music you listen to. Listen to how are they picking and try to emulate, and if its too difficult pick an "easier song"

Bought my first 7string yesterday. It's an Ibanez RGIR27FE BK. Plays very nicely!!
Still have to find a better tone and need thicker strings, but here is a first video of me trying it out at home.

If people are interested I can write a detailed review when I played the guitar a bit more.
