To Sc2ttyl, I recommend going on Ultimate-Guitar to find tabs, or specific sheet music for the guitar, to start off and learn songs. Afterwards, I recommend purchasing Guitar Pro 6.

If you want to learn some scales and chords, here's a cool website:
all-guitar-chords.com

Navigate around there; it's a great resource.

So is:
j-guitar.com

for naming chords that you make up and for finding sick positions.

I suggest you learn these scales if you're just starting out, because they work for most genres of music:

major
minor pentatonic
blues
mixolydian
dorian

Ahhhh.... that white strat is soooo nice!

American fenders are so nice, I'm a lucky boy and have three of them! An original 69 strat (which i'm not allowed to play... I'm 28 and a professional musician and my dad still doesn't tust me), an original 74 strat (which i play most of my gigs with) and a modern strat.

If i could buy any guitar I would go for a Martin, the fact that Martin's aren't listed on that poll of fav guitar brands is just not on! Martin make the best guitars on the planet and have done for 150 years...... guess the OP must be pretty young or not very experienced with guitars

p.s.... after 24 years of playing guitar, i know over 2000 songs to heart....... the longer you play the easier it gets to remember, i can still play the first song my dad ever taught me when i was 4 years old.... its insane.

I actually found that jazz and metal were really similar. Blew my mind. Blew my mind even more when I realized that country guitar is really close to jazz as well.

BTW, if you download Google Chrome and use it as your browser, there is an extension called Guitar Pro viewer and is free. It allows you to play the tabs from any song. Just search the song and you are done! :D I use that one in combination w/ the actual Guitar Pro program. There is also a Guitar Pro app for iPhone which I use more than anything else.

Then this will finish you off completely.... all modern rock, country and jazz guitar styles can be traced back to the blues grass of the early 1900's..... blues grass can trace its roots back to directly tribal African music. Seriously, dudes were busting out vocal solo's in africa in the 1600's that wouldn't sound of out place if played on guitar over a modern rock song.....

Schecter Hellraiser C1 Floyd Rose - BlacK Cherry: Incredibly Versatile. Surprisingly, the Sound can range from Really authentic sounding blues and funk (with volume knob down and single coil setting) to Insane Blazing Metal (on Humbuckers with Max volume!) and pretty much everything in between... Love it. Only thing I hate is changing tuning cause of the Floating Bridge. Both Pick Ups can go from Humbucker to Single Coil... Lots of variety of sounds. Awesome clean too. There's also one with out the FR to make tuning easier

My Spare:

Ibanez GIO - BlacK: Generic guitar, mostly Rock guitar. Nothing compared to Hellraiser!

My Acoustic:

Lucero Classical Guitar - Low End Nylon Stringed Guitar. I like to jam a lot on this ONE since I just have to pick up and play... I need a steel stringed ONE though.

My Effects Board:

Line 6 Spider III 15 watt - The amp works. Nothing special really, its good for beginners I guess. I usually just use my Sennheiser headphones though since I can't disturb the peace so much.

I'm a self taught guitarist, been playing for about 3 years now.

Only full Song I bothered learning was Sweet Child O' Mine including the solo, Which I learned a year ago. I know other riffs from songs here and there but I usually just jam around on my classical or sometimes pull out my electrics and record riffs here and there for fun.

edit: Just had to mention that the hellraiser sounds like a BEAST when you drop its tuning. I had it down to Drop C before... Insane. Was playing Disturbed, Killswitch, Avenged, etc. Thing sounds sinister!

Ya, I knew the roots of music, but I mean the approach and modal changes and the way that chord progressions were written didn't seem similar until I started doing it myself.
