i think you are fortunate to be able to take this stance but that you will find it disastrous for many people. i'm not talking about 2 months in and you're whining that your fingers still hurt. i'm talking a good 1.5 years in and you've been practicing the same fucking single chord transition for 6 months and still can't do it for no goddamn reason and you still can't practice for more than a few hours without wondering why the fuck your callouses aren't strong enough yet and you've been just about ready to pack it in for a long time now coz its just not worth it and you're clearly just naturally incapable and cursed with the shittest body known to mankind and just whats the point? then you switch to an easier guitar and easier strings and its like, OH I COULD HAVE JUST USED LIGHTER STRINGS, WELL I GUESS I'LL JUST USE LIGHTER STRINGS FROM NOW ON, DAMN

I've been on-and-off playing acoustic guitar for most of my life and I was recently considering getting some sort of certification both as a test of my skills and because I have ambitions of teaching guitar as a hobby / side job. I looked into what is called the "Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music" which is an internationally recognized examination board for many classical instruments.

Does anyone have any experience with this at all? I am personally quite curious at what grade level I would be at, especially since I have mostly been playing for my own amusement and have not given too much serious thought towards systematically improving. I'm a little afraid that performance as a whole is lost on me, that I am only a fledgling when it comes to playing musically for an audience etc. I don't know how harsh the standards are.

For reference sake, this is the syllabus that they are using.

Getting the 7-string itch. I have a 7 but it's just a cheap Ibanez and it's hardtail. I'm too spoiled by my RG3250 and it makes that 7 feel just awful to play. I think I'm gonna sell it and snag an rg1527 or something else 7 string from the Prestige line off the Ishibashi. Or maybe a 7620 if they have any in good shape. They had a few 1527s with Edge Zeros for cheap when I looked on there a while back and I really dig the Edge Zero. My 3250 has one and it's great.

I priced out the new version of the 1527 (AKA the 752, which is a 1527 with an Edge and a pair of DiMarzios) from a few places here. Over 2 grand for one with an Edge and 1800 for a hardtail. $1500+ for a Premium series 7. I think I saw a 752 in mint condition with an Edge on the Ishibashi last summer for about $900 CAD plus shipping. It's pretty hard to justify buying anything at the local shops anymore. All the mom-and-pop shops got killed off by Long and McQuade and St. John's Music so it's either pay a ton at L&M or pay a ton at St. John's if I want to buy locally. They don't even bother to do setups on their guitars anymore either.

Edit: Went to Long and McQuade today to pick up some heavier strings for my 7 and yeah, it was dire. Squiers for $500 and the cheapest 7 string they had was $1300 for a mid-range Jackson. The only price I saw there that was remotely reasonable was $2000 for a new Rickenbacker 4003, which is actually relatively cheap for a Rick.

I also priced out a Schecter 7 string with a Floyd Rose and the cheapest one I could find other than the low end ones was nearly $1600 here. Over a grand to get a hardtail Loomis or Keith Merrow model and add $400 for a Floyd. Wow guitar prices in Canada are getting dumb. We used to be US price + 10% and now it's more like US price + 40%. I understand our dollar is weaker but it's not that weak.

I moved to Berlin and I want a guitar. I would normally go used, but I don't speak German and the sites for used guitars are really confusing when you don't speak German.

I'm looking for a nylon string. I like the Cordoba gk studio but I'm looking for something much cheaper.

Have you guys ever bought a guitar online? I'm nervous to go that way, because I know the feel of the guitar matters so much. Any recommendations on this front?

I've heard good things about Thomann. Buying guitars online usually is fine. Not being able to try stuff is a bummer but if you can find something similar locally you can usually get enough of a feel to judge whether you like it or not.

I was looking for a 7 string with a Floyd Rose, but thinking about it, I think I've actually used the bridge on my RG3250 probably 3 times in 2 years. I mostly use Floyds for the tuning stability. So I've decided to go for a hardtail with locking tuners, and with a brighter tonewood body than mahogany. My current 7 is mahogany and is super muddy sounding distorted, and tough to get the low end dialed in at all. Not to mention it doesn't stay in tune for more than 5 minutes.

Long and McQuade actually has a decent deal right now, $1300 for a new RG752 prestige with a fixed bridge, locking gotohs, Dimarzios, and a hardcase. With the yen being strong right now, the cheapest I could get a used 7 from Ishibashi is about the same price, so I think I'm gonna go for this. I have some gift cards to use up from there too which is a bonus.

Best part about that RG752, it's PURPLE!!

Rich at http://www.ibanezrules.com/ is amazing at setting up each guitar he sells depending on the buyers preference. He specializes in setting up floating tremolos and really knows all Ibanez inside and out. I bought a JEM77VBK from him several years ago, he lowered the action and set it up exactly how I told him, no fret buzz or anything, plays like a dream. Prices are pretty fair as well. His site looks like it's from the late 1990's lol.. but if you're looking for anything Ibanez, he's probably the best in the country.

I bought a cordoba c5. It's awesome. Everyone should try a nylon string.

(I do wish it had a cutaway and pickup, but I'm poor)

I don't like cutaways on a nylon string, although I was trained in classical guitar and cutaways are mostly frowned upon. They are great for flamenco and other Spanish styles though.

The Cordoba c5 is decent for its relativity cheap price. Good pick imo

Yes, I've heard lots of good things about him! He's been well known for a long time. Sadly adding on shipping and duty and everything to get a guitar to Canada from him right now is pretty pricey because of our crappy dollar. I was totally considering buying from there before I ordered my 752.

Hi people.
Picked up an electric guitar 4 months ago. Never even held one before. Was thinking about doing that for a while and needed an actual hobby for once.
Fernandes Revolver X. Used, but re-stringed and with rebuilt fretboard. 10-52.
Have 0 experience in guitars, started learning from scratch, first on my own, then with a teacher for about two months, but he paid little attention to the lessons, so I've continued on my own again, ~2 hours a day.
Don't even have any specific questions as a novice since I've no idea about anything. Just saw a guitar thread, so why not post.

hi ^^^^ welcome
my tip is.... lighter strings are much easier to make chords with if you have trouble making chords......
u can plug into your computer using something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Focusrite-Scarlett-Audio-Interface-Tools/dp/B01E6T56CM/ and get cool amp effects using something like Reaper / Amplitube

I'm using the cheap solution with less than legal software and a 3/4" cable for now. Sound's good enough, no lag. Also picked up the rocksmith1014 thing at the start, but it really doesn't like normal cables and as an actual teaching tool it doesn't look good, too much basic stuff missing.
Don't have plans for more serious equipment, no funds.
I've been checking the ultimateguitar forums for some times, and there's a loooot of stuff, so I'm just taking things slow. Mostly working on basic finger exercises like chromatic progressions and the like, just trying to get a certain consistent speed first.
Also I suck at chords and it doesn't feel like a strings problem I just barely spend any time on them, though not like I can compare.

You suck at chords because you just started and your fingers aren't used to it, the only way to get better at it (much like Starcraft) is to just sit down and play regularly. Like with practicing anything, you're better off playing one hour every day than 7 hours every Sunday.

The first period of playing guitar is a pain in the ass because everything is hard and sounds like ass, but when you actually start playing music it's amazing, so keep it up and have fun

ya i had massive trouble making chords (like getting the strings to sound out) for like 6++ months of solid practice until i gave up and bought a new and wider neck guitar and then later tried lighter strings
