What Neil Tyson fails to realize is that aliens always paralyze their subjects to keep them under control, so snatching something off a shelf would be impossible.

Way to get the point. Let me put it this way: Occams razor. Or: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I'm pretty sure he was joking lol.

Good video though, thanks for posting.

That is much more convincing than this poorly put together video of several seconds of fuzzy lights of multiple types (suggesting tons of different types of alien aircraft).

The evidence in this thread is extremely weak, and you need extremely good evidence for stuff like this.

Do you EVER even try to look for the other side of the other argument before posting crap? A single google search to tehran 1976 shows dozens of explanations to it in the first page. Have you even tried to do that before posting? From what I gather that's simply a temporary abuse of wikipedia that simply wasn't moderated out yet. As you can easily tell from the discussion tab on that wiki page. That page is about to be deleted simply because whoever wrote that crap just failed to provide enough reference that didn't come from "ufo-evidences.com" or similar bogus websites.

So I ask you again. Do you ever try to google the stuff you post to try to understand both sides of the argument? Or do you simply copy paste stuff from your favorite ufo-fan websites and leave it for others to google stuff you are too lazy to do yourself?

Where else would you get the "evidence" from?
I mean, you won't find arguments for eating meat on a website created by vegetarians and as far as i know there has yet to come an independent organisation which deals with the ufo phenomenon.

A reason for that is, as soon as an organisation begins to look into that kind of phenomena, in the public eye it will become bogus.

As i must say, when i talk about ufos i dont talk about aliens.
An ufo is an unidentified flying object. There doesn't have to be a martian in them, or venusian, or whatever.

LOL That guy is awesome. Every UFO lover should watch this

He talks about a very important point that 99% of the people don't understand. That science is never 100% sure about ANYTHING. That's the whole points of science. To be always questioning the universe, including your own answers, and always try to come up with better solutions. If you are 100% sure about something, you're a bad scientist. If you are sure, then it's not science, it's religion. That's the definition of what religion is. To have faith in believing in something with no questioning. If you're a religious person who starts questioning your beliefs. You're doing science. Science is questioning and uncertainty.

This big common arguments the masses keep using over and over that: "you cannot be 100% sure aliens/god/unicorns doesn't exist, so it's plausible science". Is ridiculous and completely misunderstanding of what science is. And just inverting the burden of proof. You need to have much more than just "you cannot prove it wrong" to have a reasonable theory that will be worth the time of any science board. Because there is NOTHING about science that we know for sure, not just your theory. So for your theory to have any relevance, you have to provide a little more than just "you cannot prove it wrong". Because that's ridiculous, and no one will take you seriously.

People, check that book out.

As a wannabe scientist I'm naturally very skeptical. However, in the case of UFOs that is Unidentified Flying Objects (no where did I say aliens) a scientific - esque inquiry is definitely deserved. I say scientific-esque because it would be very difficult to do a real scientific study without hard evidence. But there would still be something to gain if people took it seriously and actually spent time and resources investigating the matter. The majority of reported sightings can be explained as weather phenomenon, illusion, known aircraft etc. but as Kean states in her book about %5 of sightings have never been explained but HAVE been documented as very real occurances. These are military, pilots, and other professionals having encounters that they cannot explain.

I think it is that %5 that deserve to be taken seriously, and once again nobody is saying aliens. I just hope eventually the stigma that comes with taking these things seriously will go away.

So, you're evaluation of the humanities current understanding of the universe, quantum physics, subatomic particles, and relativity is that we have "left a couple of things undiscovered"? I think that is a gross overestimation of what we know.

This is what you think, but you can't proof it as heishe can't either. However, restricting the field in physics and astrophysics, the vasts majority of the work is done, with the exception of quantum gravity. Yes there are lots of other field of knowledge that need a lot of research (for example neuroscience) but they are not connected with space travel.

So, you're actually saying that the vast majority of everything that can be discovered in physics has been discovered? Really? Wow. Like I said, man, faith.

Show nested quote +

It is funny that you say that because you seem to have incredible faith in physics.

This is not faith, believing in some sort of FTL travel to be discovered in future is faith.

I don't believe that some sort of FTL travel will be discovered. I believe that you don't know nearly enough to say that it won't.
And isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick: rational thinking; but, when you're good and crazy, ooohoohoohoohoooo, the sky is the limit!

You didn't really understand what Neil said, now, did you? If you didn't watch the video, go back a couple of posts and watch the Neil Tyson video.

Also, a) cut the crap, if you considered UFOs to be just unidentified flying objects, chances are you wouldn't give a flying fuck about them; b) being a "wannabe scientist" doesn't make you "very skeptical", definitely not "naturally". In my experience, this sort of preamble is used by credulous people who think saying this would make their arguments any more convincing or make them look less gullible. Fact: it doesn't. Finally, c) who gives a shit about what "military, pilots, and other professionals" say if what they're saying is c.1) that there have been times where they didn't, or failed to, identify a flying object or c.2) claiming it was something but can't provide evidence for their claims? This is a logical fallacy called appeal to authority, and if you "want to be" a scientist, you better learn to see through this nonsense.

Either way it's bullshit. Seriously, get a grip.

Phew watched this video at 1 a.m. by myself in the dark and not gonna lie was a bit freaked out. Thank god I can always rely on the TL community to knock some sense into me lol.

The video is well done but some selective editing helped to give it some dramatic value. I think aliens do exist somewhere in our universe, space is too vast for us to be the only ones. However I certainly do not think that their are extra-dimensional beings who are infiltrating our government and preparing to wipe out the "major population centers."

I wish these conspiracy theorists would quit piggy-backing on the Mayan thing. Which is ridiculous in its own right. I mean, my school releases the class schedules for the semesters for the next two years at a time, does that mean that after that their is no school or that the school will cease to exist? No it means they haven't printed the schedules for them yet because its very far off. That reasoning doesn't even make sense. Anyway's good discussion.

All these threads depress me.

Aliens visiting earth in this manner just makes no sense whatsoever. Why make hints by letting us see "UFOs" even though they must have technology to stay completely hidden (Since we never detect any spaceships nearing earth with any telescopes or satelites?) Why not do something? Why even visit earth? It makes no sense, and the fact that so many still chooses to believe this makes me sad.

Besides that there are always way more likely explanations for all unidentified flying objects than that they are alien spacecraft. JUST BECAUSE WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS DOES NOT MEAN IT HAS TO BE ALIENS!

Yes, there is almost a certainty that other lifeforms of some kind exist elsewhere in the universe, but that they will ever visit earth or be able to travel very far in a galactic sense is very very very unlikely.

On such an elitist site as TL, or has that changed, people need to try harder to be smart.

Rocket spirals:
http://www.rockets.jeffhove.com/TridentSpiral.jpg
http://rofl.wheresthebeef.co.uk/Corkscrew Missile.jpg

All spiral UFOs occurred during failed rocket tests. One by Russia over Norway, one by China over China and one by the US over Australia.
Rocket spirals are rare events and when one happens tomorrow it will be all over UFO sites. So showing the actual 'UFO' pictures to show how a bigger rocket spiral in darkness looks like, can't be done. All of them are market UFO.

And then we see this picture/video from Kazakhstan. It looks like a rocket! Also, if you track the tail, it looks like it came from the surface rather than from space. Maybe aliens are launching rockets from Baikonur
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8RLOdlrA7l4/TDmsOrVDVmI/AAAAAAAADvQ/Hi5IGSzYFcE/s1600/Kazakhstan UFO 2010.png

People, as long as we will be having helicopters fly at night when people use long exposure cameras and as long as countries will be launching rockets, we will keep seeing these very familiar 'UFO's all across the world.

How the hell do you know what I would care about? The fact of the matter is UFOs are what the acronym stands for: Unidentified Flying Objects. UFOs being of extraterrestrial origin is one theory, an intriguing one at that, but not the only one. And it certainly doesn't make the value of investigating the matter any less.

being a "wannabe scientist" doesn't make you "very skeptical", definitely not "naturally". In my experience, this sort of preamble is used by credulous people who think saying this would make their arguments any more convincing or make them look less gullible. Fact: it doesn't.

Fine I'll restate that: As a person who will be pursuing a career in academic research AND as a person who has substantial education in math and sciences I fully understand the scientific method/philosophies and am fully aware of the inherent skepticism needed to investigate natural phenomenon like UFO sitings. I'm sorry but you're coming off as an ultra-opinionated douche.

You didn't even counter anything I said.. why exactly shouldn't the phenomenon of UFOs be taken seriously? Like I said there are a fairly substantial amount of UFO reports with documentation (radar data being the most intriguing) that simply have not been investigated to the measure that they deserve.

You're right appeals to authority is a logical fallacy. But when you're talking about military officials who were at one time not allowed to speak of events that they witnessed, then you actually do gain some insight into listening to them. And no these aren't just people who couldn't identify an object in the sky, these are pilots who were sent on missions to intercept unknown craft only to have them perform impossible maneuvars etc. that is just an example, stop being such a close-minded nitwit and actually look it up.

My point boils down to this: There is definitely something to be gained in scientifically and skeptically investigating the legitimately unexplained, well documented, UFO cases.

P.S. Learn to use proper punctuation and complete sentences. It helps to remove that tinge of rabid- internet-rager that your post is steaming with.
