Obama on the other hand is the smartest president the US has ever had. Obama is very smart (but I am biased given my profession in the legal field). But smartest? No way. John Quincy Adams had like an IQ of 168. William Taft did an admirable job of heading up the Supreme Court as Chief Justice. Woodrow Wilson was a lawyer and a doctor (ok a Ph.D. but still), and later a professor.

Well smartest in terms of social status, IQ, and formal education is one thing...actually reacting the best way possible in times of crisis, opposite to american traditions, knowingly taking the shitstorm from his fellow americans is another. Patriotism has nothing to do with loving your country's faults, but fighting for your country to be rightous, and amougst the best. Obama cares more about the world than being reelected. Of course the US have had good presidents before,..but it's still the only developed country in the world that can elect an empirically proven retard for president, manipulated by bad rhetoric, and financed media..even when there is always is a great alternative somewhere in the voting booth ![]()

That would be worse than Kim Jong-Il and his family of miscreants.

That would lead to a possibly mmilitary coup and lead to even worse things as hardline military generals take over. That would be worse than Kim Jong-Il and his family of miscreants. He's been defined more friendly from multiple sources, not friendly in an absolute sense. IIRC he's even western-educated. That means that while he won't go and be the US best buddy, he's not going to pursue a war that is destroying his country without even a shot (well let's not consider the little incidents) being fired. Maybe he will follow the chinese model.

Unless North Korea has developed a secret death ray, a fullblown war with both sides trying to kill eachother would last the flight time of a ballistic missile.

That's right the entire Korean peninsula would be turned to a crisp if war were to break out. The satus quo isn't ideal but it's leagues better then annihalation.

War is seldom a necassary evil, at least not when we choose to use it.Status quo is better to have for a generation with aid, than risking instability through out the whole world for countless generations. Everyone want's to be included in growth, and welth. It's a question of time, always. Some people think the opposite, and that you can just bomb something into what you want, and wait for the birds to sing when the dust settles..the midlle east should have taught people something about that assumption.

Would that be overly fearful? My rational mind thinks she would be fine. Especially since she is around Busan(which is near the bottom right side of S.Korea), so is quite far away from danger...I think. Oh well. I do hope no wars break out.

She is in the safest part of Korea geographically. I don't know if there is an important armybase there, demographically dense, or cruical infrastructural points. She will be ok. It will happen gradually, and necassary measures will be taken. This is a posterchild-event the NATO wants to handle right.

I am just afraid sometimes of her not being able to leave the country if war did break out. But I'm sure she'll be fine even if the worst did happen.

I'm kinda surprised, the South really shows weakness by not reacting properly, but it's all for the sake of peace, patiently waiting for the new, more western-friendly leader to fully take power. How can we react properly? We returned fire. We scrambled jets. We issued an order to hit their turrets hard if any form of further aggression was shown. Are you advocating a full-scale invasion of a border country with superior military manpower and nuclear/chemical weapons with half of our population within firing range of the same guns that hit the island? Sometimes "showing weakness" is necessary to "prevent a catastrophe" when you're dealing with a "complete psychopath" like KJI.
