I think Blue mics are the big "thing" now. I have a Snowflake and it's pretty fantastic, and the Snowball is as well.

Headphone community with lots of info on perhaps 98% of all headphones ever made. Coincidentally a big review is one of the top stories right now. Otherwise I'm with a pair of Sennheiser 280 pro's that have served me well for the last 5 yrs or something such, looking to get a pair of audio technicas with dedicated headphone amp come next salary. Before all this I had a pair of sennheiser 595's and 5XX(cant quite remember the model). Good headphones all of them but for these last few years nothing but closed work as I'm not living by myself and like to listen to music fairly loud.

At any rate, I'm hoping to go to some local store today so I could try out some headphones.

The problem I need a fairly long cable and most of the ones I've been looking at are too short for what I need. Since I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to these things I was wondering how well it works to buy an extension cable? Are there any risks with compability, sound issues or something. Is it better to try and find one that comes with a longer cable? It feels like that would be cheaper but I don't know how much they factor that into the price of the headphones. If the connection goes loose, there will be an audible problem. Otherwise, no issue (okay, possibly a very slight increase in crosstalk, susceptibility to stray interference, and so on, depending on the construction, but these are negligible effects in realistic home listening situations). Just use the extension cable. Consider like JVC HA-RX700, Samson RH600, etc. if you really want to keep to a strict budget.

Although I might switch to headphones and a mic when this one breaks just for the amazing sound quality you can get from some of the high end headphones out there right now.

Hey, I was curious about the 440s, so I Google'd them and found this Amazon deal. If you're capable of using it, seems like a great deal, but I don't know for sure. http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH440-Professional-Studio-Headphones/dp/B002DP1FTU $80

The first 60 days, I can even just bring them into the store and they'll swap me out for a new set, no questions asked.

![]() These headphones are awesome, they're super cheap, have sort of good quality, and never break. I probably would prefer the big over-the-head headsets, but those don't fit in my pocket D:

Anyway, my choices boiled down to the AKG K702, Beyerdynymic DT880 and Sennheiser HD600. Decided to go with the Sennheiser after reading a bunch of reviews, comparisons and whatnot. Suits me more I believe. What I hear repeated over and over is that I'll need an amplifier and a DAC (didn't even know what this was at first) to get the full potential. Knew I would eventually but had no idea there was this much to chose from. Really quite clueless as to where I should look for the eventual amp/DAC upgrade. Anyone know of a good For Dummies esque guide? Don't want to end up spending as much as the headphones on something not at all suited for them, nor do I want to create a huge bottleneck in my system with two new components.

I can fiddle around in the sound properties on my computer and successfully test sample rates and get a little jingle noise, but I'm not actually getting any sound output from anything... ideas?

Don't want to end up spending as much as the headphones on something not at all suited for them, nor do I want to create a huge bottleneck in my system with two new components. "Full potential" is a phrase I see used a lot and rewritten, that I don't think is very helpful. Whatever you're using now to get sound out of headphones will most likely not be any worse when hooked up to a HD 600. It's just that (1) if there are problems with it, higher-end headphones may make them much more apparent and (2) HD 600 is a lot quieter than most lower-end headphones, so the volume may not be sufficiently high out of an ordinary source. Headphones are the large part of the upgrade--everything else (except the music you're listening to) will have a much smaller effect overall. As for a guide, I'm not sure what's best, but try this (also the links therein): http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/gain-and-headphone-ampsdacs.html There's some bias IMHO regarding what is proper design for an amp and the role of an amp, but that's about what I would say if you're starting out. A lot of audiophile equipment intentionally (or not) alters the signal that passes through, in ways that supposedly make it sound better. I'd prefer to leave any added effects to software rather than hardware though. On October 12 2011 10:38 Decessus wrote: Is there any good quality wireless headphones? I don't know anything about specific wireless headphones, but Sennheiser RS series is maybe what you're looking for to start with. I'm not sure if any have a wired option. Keep in mind that wireless headphones have a wireless receiver hooked up to a (controller to a) integrated DAC to an integrated amp. Or at least I assume they do, or else how else would they work? So if you were to expect them to have a normal input jack, it would be bypassing all of that.
