The Fiio E7 fall on the price range that you are looking at. They are solid amps for their price and a lot of audiophiles seem to like them. I'm also planning on buying one for my self.

Owned three pairs and they all tore after a couple of months. I go through headphones like butter though.

Do you notice any differences between the onboard audio and iPod? Anyway, apparently this guy is about to publish a Fiio E7 review, so stay tuned: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/

![]() I've been reading a lot about headphone amplifiers, and I'm not sure if i need one, so i decided to turn to my most trusted ally, teamliquid. My questions are, for the 448's running off of my (stock) computer or my ipod classic (6g), do I need an amplifier? Secondly, will a cheap amp like the FiiO E5's do anything at all for my headset? Is it worth spending another $100 on a decent amp? Thanks a lot and please feel free to PM me about anything. EDIT: Do i need to burn these in or will they burn in naturally pretty well?

No you will not need an amp for the 448s FiiO E5 will most likely not do much for your headset as they probably aren't geared to listening to music anyways They do have a bass boost function which you might like Honestly, there is no point in buying an amp unless your headphone needs it. Your headset and the 448 will definitely not need any amp Enjoy listening to the 448s ![]() I considered buying them but chose the HA-RX900s ![]()

Part of me badly wants to drop a ton of money on a good headphone amp and DAC so I get the most out of my headphones, such as the Schiit Valhalla with a Music Streamer II DAC. Tell me what you guys think. EDIT: The above is my "expensive" set of goods. If I decide I don't want to spend so much right now I'll likely go with the FiiO E7 + E9 combo or wait for the E15 that has been kinda informally announced on Head-Fi. Still with the DT 990s though.

What I was wondering is if they need anything to really get the best out of them - do they need an amp, do I need to get a soundcard - I'm kind of lost since I am really new to this whole deal. Please help? ![]() Uh, I'm pretty sure they don't need an amp, you only need amps for seriously powerful (hi-hi-hi end) headphones. If you're using them with your computer, it should come with an audiocard that's more than good enough.

If you're upgrading from most motherboard onboard audio / portable player solutions with most decent headphones, you should notice an improvement. This is particularly the case if the onboard audio won't go loud enough (like with Beyer DT990 600 ohms no doubt), has some bad impedance interactions with the load, is picking up noise from the rest of the computer system, etc. But in general you can do better for not that much more money (e.g. Asus Xonar DG). For their part, Sennheiser HD 595 is generally regarded as being okay on stock amplification, for what that's worth. It shouldn't be a tricky load for most cheap sources to drive. Anyway, reviews are hard to trust because differences in higher-end equipment becomes vanishingly small, and the effect of expectation biases tend to dominate smaller differences. Very few people buying and then reviewing such things have the interest, equipment, and/or expertise to properly evaluate them--either through a few measurements or even some kind of controlled listening test. So it's hard to say. Some readings if you're bored and have nothing better to do IMO: http://seanolive.blogspot.com/2009/04/dishonesty-of-sighted-audio-product.html http://www.matrixhifi.com/ENG_contenedor_ppec.htm

You can certainly get a cleaner, more accurate signal with a more expensive device feeding the headphones. Some more expensive devices will give you a worse output than something cheaper. You can also get something with additives, like bass boost, crossfeed, intentional harmonic distortion, etc. Whether or not that corresponds to getting more out of your system depends on what kind of sound you like and even partially on the kind of (volume) levels you listen at. Do you think the best equipment is what sounds the best or what imposes the least of its sound signature on the signal (what is the most transparent)? I think my opinion has shifted a bit more towards the E7 + E9 (or E15 if it comes out in a reasonable amount of time) combo, just because it would be better for me to spend a 200-300 dollars now on that equipment, such that I can really appreciate the sound out of something potentially more expensive. I will need to check if the E9 can actually reasonably power the DT 990's at 600 ohms though.

10log10(80) + 96 = 115 dB, which is plenty loud for a peak output and should be around live levels. A lot of headphones run out of excursion by the time they reach about 115 dB, so even if the amp can do it, the headphones might not be able to do it. I'm not sure about the DT990. And that's well into hearing damage range anyway. You could see if others with amps of similar outputs have issues with the 600 ohm Beyers. My guess is that they're well okay.

My headphones recently broke, so now I'm looking to buy a new pair... can someone "experienced" recommend a good pair for 50 bucks or less?
