It's a lot like choosing between a desktop or laptop... or a choosing between a car or truck For home listening I take the RE0 over any headphones costing south of $200. At least from those I tried to far.

Audeze LCD-2 came in last week. My Schiit Lyr (Amp) came in today. Ordering my Meier StageDAC today (DAC.. obviously). I haven't heard my LCD-2's with the amp yet, but just running them out of my Xonar Essence ST I've been hearing details and 3d imaging of instruments I never had heard before through my previous headphones (Beyer DT880's). I'll wait to write more once the DAC comes in so I can have the full experience to give you. Here's some pics (generic, not mine):

that set up above me is so amazing :-) if i had money i would probably get that too! /jealous

Any particular reason you're not running the line out of the Essence ST to the Lyr?
I'd love to hear comparisons of different sources to the LCD-2, if that's something you were planning to do or would not mind doing.

How's the Schiit? kekeke.
I want to get the Nuforce Icon HD or HDP for my HD650s. Trying to sell my D2000s, but I don't really want to, haha.

Cause the Amp came while I was at work, and my setup was at home haha
When you say different sources you mean different DACs? Unfortunately my only source is the ST right now, I'll definitely compare it to the StageDAC once I get that though.
I've never been so happy about purchases I've made in my life. I listen to music at least 3-4 hours a day, and I feel like I'm hearing music for the first time.

Well that's a good reason then, to not have tried the amp with the setup. I'll try to read what's written next time.
I meant to do a comparison of ST (use as DAC+amp) vs. ST (DAC to line out) -> Lyr vs. StageDAC -> Lyr. Based on advertised specs (for what that's worth) and some crude measurements, you'd expect the line-out of the ST to be pretty good and presumably pretty close to the StageDAC with crossfeed turned off. But how is it in practice?

I got some HD555s after reading a couple of pages of this thread.
I am very, very satisfied.

For sure, I'll try it out when the StageDAC arrives and let you know!

I just picked up a pair of Sennheiser HD 380's to replace my razer megalodon which has given me nothing but problems since the beginning. The experience has left me so soured I can't see my self using another razer headset in the foreseeable future. (Average at best audio quality, microphone never worked properly despite multiple RMA's)

The comfort on this thing is amazing compared to what I had, the coiled cord it has on it is great and almost makes up for the lack of a quick release (detaching section that disconnects if you pull away rather than damaging your jack and plug.) All the same I use a 3 foot miniphone extension cord that I picked up for 2 bucks for extra protection since my cables seem to get stuck on my armrest a lot. My days of USB headsets are over.
I was under the impression that using on board sound would be passable for the HD 380's, however after installing a new sound blaster the headphones really came alive in quality, as well as upping the maximum db's it can put out. I can turn it up loud enough to rattle my head now, however I don't recommend doing that. Frankly if I can give any advice, it's that any one with a $100 pair of over ear headphones using on board sound, drop 50-100$ on a nice sound card for a huge improvement.
I give the HD 380's a great recommendation for any one looking for a closed headphone in the 150-200$ range. Don't let lack of a microphone discourage you, just get a standing mic for 10-30$

Had my Sennheiser RS 160's about 4 months now. I can definitely recommend them if you're looking for wireless headphones with good sound quality on the lower end of the cost scale.

Hey, I'm in the market for new headphones....
Stuff I have owned and brief thoughts: -ATH-ES7. Pretty good looking, after some modding the sound was pretty nice also...problem is that it wasn't circumaural and was sort of an awkward size (not really that portable, but not big enough to be super comfortable/good isolation. I felt like it wasn't really worth the price. -MEElec M6. Pretty comfortable, except I am not a fan of the overear thing...it gets tangled really easily and is harder to store than regular stuff. I liked the price (MeElec grab bag woo!) -Koss KSC75. Awesome sound/price. Open was a little obnoxious, but the form factor was really killer.
So, I'm open to IEM suggestions and headphone suggestions. Looking to spend no more than $100. Thought about AKG K81DJ, Sony MDR-V6...what other options should I look at? IEMs welcome too. I'll be playing this off my netbook/Sansa Clip+

I looked at what was on Best Buy for the $50-100 range--of course, all prices are well inflated compared to what you can find online. Of those, consider these three below. All happen to be closed (sound isolating, to an extent).
Koss Pro DJ 100 ($80) Shure SRH440 ($100) Sony XB500 ($80)

mix-style yellow star. they're decent for 50$.

I haven't personally heard any of those, but I know people say great things about the Shure SRH440 if you are willing to extend your budget a little bit.

I am very, very satisfied. Same, except I don't have mine yet. I get them on the weekend. I am quite pumped. They were cheap but I am not looking for perfect sound quality, but a comfy set of headphones to use at my desk.

Does anyone know if the Xonar ST is worth the upgrade form a Xonar DX? The headphones I use is Ultrasone-580. I want the ST amp but I'm not sure if my headphones will benefit much (32ohms I believe).

Well how is the volume for you? I know when I had my DT880's (32 ohm) running straight out of my PC (no soundcard) it wasn't nearly loud enough, even at 100% PC volume I was having a hard time hearing stuff in movies even. When I got my Essence ST it was a godsend, I had more volume than I knew what to do with, plus a pretty great (for the price) DAC. It was pretty night and day for me, but that was coming straight from my integrated computer sound (Realtek AC97) to the Essence ST.
I haven't heard the DX so I can't say for sure, but I have to say the Essence ST is DEFINITELY worth the price and it will serve as a decent DAC when you decide (or if you decide) to upgrade to an external amp. Even when you decide to upgrade to an external DAC too, the Essence ST has one of the cleanest (if not the cleanest) Optical Out's of any sound card, so it works great as a transport as well.
