Well, I like bass and preferably with decent-good isolation. I plan to use it with an iPod so, yeah portable too. Meelec M6 would be alright on the very portable side of things. Phonak PFE Perfect Bass would be better. M50 is always recommended too but it's less portable.
In terms of pure sound quality, the Phonak PFE would be the best I would think.

Posted this in Head-Fi but I value Teamliquid's opinion very highly
Hi guys,
I picked up Senn HD555 for ~$80 and I am very impressed (have yet to do the foam mod to turn them into HD595s). I also want to get a pair of IEMs for portability and isolation, preferably at around the same price, $80-100. I will be listening to classical music (piano + orchestral) on the go, with iPhone + 400 kbps AAC source. I was thinking RE0 for the excellent value but I'm wondering if there are any superior IEMs since then. I think the only other competitor at this price point would be the RE-ZERO, but to my understanding there's very little improvement and probably not worth the extra price premium. Thoughts?

Can't go wrong with the RE0. Bonjwa IEM for gosus.
I bet you'll wonder why you even bothered with the 555s lol.

I got the AT M50's a couple months back for $110, best headphones I've had so far.

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to go with the Sparrow B. Didn't want to wait a month and despite the promo on the NFB It's still like ~70$ more. Sparrow B shipped from the US distributer is $170 shipped, so, good price. I was originally hoping to spend more like $100 because both the headphones I'm choosing between are pretty easy to power and I'm not planning to upgrade in the future. My only hesitation was that the headphone amp I have now (~6-7 yrs old?) is kinda directed for very hard to power headphones (sennheisers or old beyerdynamics with huge power requirements which sounded great with it) but sucks with the headphones I have now because the volume is at like 2-5%.
I may pick up another, cheaper amp in the future (something meant to be velcro'd to a notebook lid/used for travel) but unless something breaks I think I'm more than well suited -- the amp actually costs 10$ more than one of my candidate headphones
Won't have the Sparrow for another week or so. Got the A900s now. I'm digging it. Not sure if it was because my A700s were well worn and traveled but the A900s feel a bit more comfortable. They definitely sound great and look better. Honestly -- I'm a bit more excited for the AKGs. I have a hard on for easily replaceable cables and coiled cables. However I'd totally be happy with just these. Will keep each for a few weeks and sell whichever I like less.

Ath m-50 just arrived in the mail...going to try them out when I get home from school. Ridiculously excited.

Hello,
Since my roccat kave's mic just died, i'm looking to buy new headphones.
As i'm already there ... well i guess i'll ask here :p
-My budget is around 150€ (170$ i guess?) -I'd really prefer a microphone with them -Used both for gaming & music (symphonic metal, rock, classical music, soul & jazz mainly.) -My computer got 5.1 sound -I'd like something who could actually fit into my ipod, as some headsets are usb-only or need some usb alimentation etc. -Would prefer a closed one. -Design-wise, i'd prefer something not looking "plastic".I know, materialism etc., but i want it to look just awesome. The almost-metallic look was what i liked in the kave, so i would prefer something... well, metallic.
I think that's all :p
Thanks for your advices
PS : Logitech's G35 are like 70€ on some sites, but for a limited time.As they were 150€ before, i was wondering about the actual quality ..? PS2 : Also, sorry for my terrible english :s

I believe the RE0 are one of the best IEMs out there. However, some may prefer full-sized versus earbuds for their main rig.

The G35 are cool, in the gadget kinda way, but the fact that they're selling for half the price means that they're probably worth even less as far as quality goes. I read that you'd like a mic, but a decent desk-mic is cheap and for 150eur (~$210 lol) you can get a lot better than that. I suggest you look into the Sennheiser HD 565 "Ovation". I have had the 555 and they are an awesome pair of headphones as far as sound quality goes for that price. I asume the 565 are better.

I just bought a set earlier this week and they arrived a couple of days ago. Loving them. I'm a little fearful about the microphone because it seems to have the flexibility and feel of a pipe cleaner, hopefully it's a little more durable.

I have a Sennheiser PC 360 G4ME. As the name implies, it's probably more expensive than it's actually worth but I bought it used for 80 euros whereas the price in the local webshop is 160. Not a bad deal in the slightest. And I only have good experiences with Sennheiser (PX100, CX300II, HD202) and those good experiences shall continue.

Cheap setup but with an amazing soundstage with great warmth, depth and beautiful clarity for music and gaming as well! I am surprisingly happy with the bass on the these headphones!

First impressions I really like both the ATH A900 and AKG K271 MKII. Not doing any comparisons until my new amp comes in later this week. One unfortunately thing is the K271 cord is really flimsy and has memory and stuff. Really irritates me when anything other than value electronics use crappy cords. AKG one is replaceable which is cool, but seems like a proprietary plug so your choice is a new stock at $40 or some ridiculous audiophile option for several hundred dollars. Alas. All things considered it will probably be years before constantly twisting will fray the cord inside and I can probably throw it in a cable turtle and be fine even longer but the cost to them for a nicer cord has to be pretty f'ing cheap.
Edit: Anyone have a suggestion for a MIC? I have had a Logitech USB Mic which I seem to have lost & I have a USB Headset I use for Skype. Complaint is that it picks up all my mouse clicking & typing if I talk while playing (maybe that's unavoidable?). If I was planning on casting so wanted something really HQ, what should I be looking at?

Totally different experience.

Grado SR-60 for example is open back yet is notoriously collapsed in terms of sound stage. Same with the Audio-Technica AD2K to a lesser extent. Something like a JH13 Pro actually sounds pretty vast.
I just don't agree that IEM need to be considered in a vacuum. I also stand by my interpretation that the RE0 is better than the HD555 overall. ( I also prefer the RE0 to the AKG K81dj, the Audio-Technica AD900, Shure SRH-840, SR-60, MS1i. But I do like my beyer 990's better.)
|
I think you got my point mixed up. Im not comparing sound stage or anything but why would someone who is looking for opened-back hp for classical music for at home listening be looking for IEMs instead? Each has its purposes and each has its advantages. You want certain advantages depending on your music tastes.
It's a lot like choosing between a desktop or laptop... or a choosing between a car or truck
