Cons : -coiled cable ---->you won't carry it around with your mp3 player unless you get an extra cable, which is too bad because it works wonders with an ipod -warm (not sure I'll be able to use them when the summer heatwave hits Europe) -will probably make me wanna test other gear later and get poorer everytime Pros : anything else so far .... ![]()

Got them delivered 2 days ago....coming from a 5 dollars logitech headset that I used for the past 10 years (I know.....I just got used to it) it almost feels like I'm rediscovering my music, so all hail Myrmidon! Don't you find them boring or flat? I'm asking because I had the 840's before and they are the consumer version with an added bass kick. I even thought those were kind of bland.

I'm asking because I had the 840's before and they are the consumer version with an added bass kick. I even thought those were kind of bland. Yes, I read a lot of reviews about the 840s and 440s mentioning they being flat (which some people seemed to love while others hated). Since I had no point of reference, I thought I'd invest in cans that would have good reviews and be "neutral" (guess I was a bit afraid of buying something very "typed" which didn't please me - since I couldn't return them) They're not boring right now as far as I can tell but as I said I'm coming from pretty much the cheapest headphone solution out there so this is a huge step up. Also I knew I could - and do - use them through a decent amp but so far haven't modified any of the settings (this "direct source" button) - I like them a lot the way they are. I'm no bass freak (mostly pop, indie music) so the - in my opinion - lowish bass level is not an issue for me right now and whenever it will be, the amp will solve part of the problem (testing as I type , Metallica's My friend of misery's intro is a bit bass-dull straight from the box, with the amp loudness activated it's absolutely great but yeah that means that with no amplification, they're a bit dull for that kind of rock). I don't know about the other ranges/frequencies, need to listen more carefully in the future to see if i can find something that bugs me but so far, it's been good to very good. Dad just bought a couple of entry level Sennheiser, I might test them properly through the amp later on to see which one I like best I only ran a quick pearl jam test on an ipod, the Senn seemed much much more (almost over-) bassy out of the box ; I guess if you get used to it, its perfectly fine too, and then the Shure probably sounds flat when you're getting back to it...time will tell. I think I'll invest in one or two extra very different second hand cans in the future, just to see if the grass is greener.....and if you got any tip, they're welcome ;D

I realize that closed headphones won't sound as good as open ones but I may need the isolation. Thanks!

I would recommend getting a dedicated USB sound card, like a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro for surround (if you want surround), or a NuForce uDAC (what I have) for stereo sound. Use that to power your sound with whatever headphones you like. I have a set of AKG k701 (a bit more expensive than what you're looking for), but they sound absolutely AMAZING with classical music. At the 200 range, the AKG k271 would be a stellar option (I've heard them, sounds legit) because it sounds great without an amplifier, therefore you can probably use them with the Clip+ without too much issue. Sennheiser makes the HD25-1 ii (closed) and the HD55/595 (open) and Grado's SR125i (open) are in that price range also and are pretty portable (the HD555/595 not so much). I personally don't like the Grado's so much, but a lot of people seem to really like them. My friend has a Denon AH-D1100, which he absolutely adores, so that's another option. But really, we can't make the choice for you. You just got to go and try things on and see if they're what you like.

Pretty solid bass, good all-round headphone that doesn't need to be amped.

Actually, with the dynamic range most classical music recordings have (sometimes local peaks at some -40 dB or so below the max possible output), I'd say the AKG K271 may well not be loud enough out of a portable source. The K271 are only 91 dB / mW, 55 ohms, so that's considerably quieter than many alternatives. Maybe you should look at the Audio-Technica ATH-A900, or maybe the A700 if the A900 is out of the price range where you're buying.

It's coiled though and rather long - if you plan to use with a portable device, you might have to invest 20$ or some in a cable easier to carry around....

There are quite a few ATH-M50 users in this thread (but not me), so hopefully someone can chime in. I think the ATH-M50S just indicates the straight cable version, as opposed to the coiled cable version. But the M50 is supposed to be much less suited to classical music than the A700 or A900, mostly because of the somewhat overemphasized bass, recessed mids, certain colorations, etc. The bass punchiness of the M50 is much better for other genres of music, for sure. The Ax00 are bulkier and less durable, and they have those nifty wing pads on your head that some people like and others don't (I like it). The M50 is smaller and can fold up. On a side note, I tried to resist the urge to say this, but + Show Spoiler + I know what people mean when they say "unamped" in a headphones context. It's therefore a very concise, mostly unambiguous description. But it still bugs me a lot. -_-;;

It also bugs me when people assume that because their PC has sufficient power output that they can avoid any other consideration about their source. But about the A700 and A900, they still quite bassy and musical compared to AD700 and AD900. Still have a mid-centric audio-technica house sound, in any case. (which the m50 betrays)

I have around 200 CAD to spend on headphones, and I was considering the Shure 440, 750DJ and 840. Other phones i can get are here. I can get the 840s, they just aren't on the site. Ideally I want closed phones, since I would be using them on a plane very often, and people don't like having music bleed ![]() My tastes are pretty varied, but mainly between TSFH and some of the older rock/alternative/country (Led Zeppelin, RHCP, Johnny Cash etc...). Still I do listen to other genres. A mic isn't important at all, these will be for music (and SC2, but i already have a mic). Ideas?
