I believe buying a special headphone amp is pretty stupid in 99% of cases. The 1% where it's not is because your headphones were so stupidly designed they hiss with all but the kindest of amps. Investing in a special DAC is also pretty retarded.

Take that, audiophools!

High sensitivity is usually the main cause of hiss and it can be fixed with like a $5~10 impedance adaptor. No need for an amp.

Amps are nice for line-out signals, high-ohm headphones, etc lots of good uses!~

yeah, not to mention these kinds of amps:

Doesn't even output one watt. But you bet your ass it sounds great.

Weird this thread just popped up and I saw the DT990s I bought last week on the first page. I was using audio technica ath-m50's for about two years prior, but I don't need a closed design any more (no roommate) and I found their clamp force fatiguing after a couple hours. The 32ohm version works just fine out of my Soundblaster X-Fi but this NuForce Icon uDAC-2 has been tempting me.

I'd recommend the Audio-GD Sparrow. Wasn't a fan of the first uDAC. Don't think it would well with the DT990 either.

Did all of you guys decide to buy separate DACs before doing any listening tests? I'm interested in going that direction, but I don't think there will be much of a difference from my motherboard's onboard sound (especially for the $xx).

I'm using Audio Technica ATH M50 with a straight cable. It performs well enough for most purposes, although I do wish I had gotten the coiled cable since it is a bit long to walk around with... My main gripe would probably be the pleather ear pads. I would have much preferred Velour, but at the price I got these for, it's really hard to find a better set of closed headphones.

Sennheiser HD-25's !!

I DJ all over, perfect for that but also awesome for any type of audio.
Closed, but not heavy on the head and comfortable when worn for for hours on end. All parts are replaceable too, but I think that's normal for Senn's?

Oops spoiler cos I'm noob and can't resize...

I have a pair of Ultrasone HFI-780s and DT770/80s. I'm hoping that my next upgrade will be my last (thinking something along the lines of MDR-SA5000 or ATH-AD2000)

Yep, I've got SA5000s, they're great.

Built the amp/dac for em myself.

Sorry if this is hijacking this thread but it seems like a reasonable enough place to ask. I'm looking into buying a pair of headphones for ~ £40-£50. Is it a possibility to get some decent ones in this price-range and if so is there anywhere you would suggest for me to look/brands you would suggest?

LOL srh840, have em too

dont you find them heavy as hell though? I might invest in a pair of wooden headphones (denons) just because i hear they are lighter, but not before i can afford a good dac.
i am so sorry
