US politics does get aired a little in Australia.

I watched a 30 minute segment on the Tea Party movement or whatever it is, and I found it the most odd, possibly scary thing I've seen in a while.

I was actually in the US during the healthcare thing, actually during the week that Congress voted on it. I found it amazing people were actually against healthcare for everybody, but I guess the US hangs to the right whereas Australia is definitely more left.

Edit: Also, your president seems like quite an intelligent person. Everything I've ever seen of Republicans (especially the babykiller thing by that Texas whacko during the healthcare thing) makes them seem like real whackjobs.

TLDR: the dudes that hang out on the far right in your country are batshit insane from my perspective.

my fat, ignorant, blindly religious, loud and obnoxious american self no longer cares about the opinions of europeans. i'd rather bask in the awesomeness of being an awesome american because nothing bothers european elitists more than being intentionally ignorant to their trivial opinions of us

He comes across as intelligent, I don't know if that is a quality that inherently makes someone a good leader.

I don't think anyone would have done a job that would have been perceieved as "good". He took the job at the worst time ever. I don't think he simply comes across as intelligent, I think he actually is. Shame he took the job when he did, I like him alot.

Its not that people are opposed to healthcare for everyone, people are worried about its implementation. Personally I have great health care and wouldn't want to trade it for government run health care. I know they have said that you can keep your independent healthcare with the new system, however there is no way privatized insurance companies can co-exist with the government's. The only people (in my views) that are affected by the healthcare issues are people from the upper-lower class that have jobs that don't offer healthcare and cannot afford it outright. The lower class is covered by state provided healthcare initiatives (in Arizona we have ACCHSS-Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System for example).

i'm being picky but, are these videos from china or taiwan? Last time australia had elections there was a satirical taiwanese news video with graphics just like these, wondering if its the same people.

Perhaps you are right, he was going to be damned no matter what. But I, particularly, see the way he has managed the Afghanistan campaign and I think that highlights a lot of weakness in his leadership. See Bob Woodward's book, and the way he completely bungled the McChrystal saga.

For me (and I have fairly central/liberal politics) that is a sign of a weak leader. No matter how academically or intellectually gifted someone can be, they need accompanying traits of confidence and calm.

I personally think that in many ways Bush for his many faults, was at least a reasonable _leader_.

Obama came in promising a lot, without the ability to deliver much of it at all. I think the healthcare changes (to us Australians seemingly an obvious thing the state should provide) was a tremendous achievement. But he seems to have done very little else. For example, with all his rhetoric on Gitmo. The place still runs much like it did when Bush was running things. And Bush was routinely obliterated by liberally minded commentators for it. Obama has largely escaped much criticism for that, from all but the most hardcore left wing commentators (your Greenwalds).

Also sniffy something to point out, Australia has a VERY different culture when it comes to public sector services compared to the US and actually even the UK now.

That's because Australia has not experienced ANYTHING like the mass migrations the US and UK have. That population pressure really does affect people's perceptions of what the state should and shouldn't do for the public.

It's sad in a way. But when I think about the health service we have in Australia vs what we have in the UK, I almost feel it would be better for a more private system here because the taxes to support the system for everyone is so high and it is borne by the middle classes mostly. It reaches a point when they would be better off in terms of service and cost on private health.

In Australia population demographics haven't yet (although this is changing) haven't yet reached that breaking point like it has in some parts of Europe, and I imagine, the US.

Actually, almost all of us don't care what you think about us, not just the crazy young-earth creationists.

I'd say most countries don't care what others have to say about them, it's just America that has a small but unfortunately present amount of people who want high-and-mighty Europe's approval.

lol hilarious thread
it seems like the typical elitist european likes to pick out the most radical american right wing extremist and tell us about how stupid these people are... like we dont fucking know already
these idiots hardly make up a fraction of our society.

lol youtube =/= real life

we already know. corporations and special interest groups are powerful in america. every senator accepts money regularly from special interest groups... blatantly obvious corruption. and yeah sure the two party system is pretty stupid and makes for hilariously fake posturing to woo specific voters of only one party or the other (because they will lose if they dont). and yeah we already know, american policy and occupation in the middle east is the root cause of 9/11 and anti-american hate. what the fuck do u want us to do about it?

but i cant help but think its so fuckin hilarious that elitist europeans come on the interwebs to rant about ignorant americans like every single fucking american is oblivious to our corrupt politics and terrible policies. they see a rally of idiots on youtube and think its fucking common to see in america. like every single person living here is a tea bagging, racist, intolerant, ignorant christian. lol seriously get off youtube already. even your news broadcasts are obviously going to choose the most extreme footage

Just curious, did the European media cover the fact that the Federal Reserve(which is 'overseen' by Congress, yet they really have no control over it) is going to buy $600-900 Billion in treasury bonds for economic 'stimulus'? The American media on television is too busy discussing the election to put any attention on this, which is kind of ridiculous.

Edit: going to put my edit in another post.

That's funny, because almost all americans I have met in Europe told me they were sad and sorry for what was happening there.

Fact is, your country is the most influencial in the world. Being the Phillipine and not caring about what people think about you is kind of fine. Being the superpower and not caring that almost everybody on this planet has a negative reaction when you pronounce the world "America" is your next biggest problem.

What is sad is, you don't even realize it.

That's an economic issue, and every well-informed American is concerned about America's debt. These aren't the same people who are obsess over the average European liking us though.

Actually, most actions by Federal Reserve are caught up and criticized by economics and media at least here in germany recently, as the strategy "flood the market with money" isn't very popular here and said to be doomed in long-term.

I had the honour of meeting one republican in my life, I was astonished by how close he thinking was from what wouuld be my definition of fascism. There is a third of your population whose ideology would give a headache to anybody in France or in England.

Fox News is the most influencial media in the US. I mean, seriously, last time I've watched two minutes and half of Fox News I got depressed for a whole week.

Hell yes. Check the front pages of the bbc, telegraph, ft, and guardian.

It's big news because it's america applying a 'beggar thy neighbour' approach to economic growth.

Although to be fair, it's a about time the Americans started playing the game the Chinese and Germans have been for so long.
