WORLD OF WARCRAFT®: WRATH OF THE LICH KING™ TO LAUNCH IN MAINLAND CHINA ON AUGUST 31, 2010

SHANGHAI, CHINA -- August 24, 2010 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and NetEase.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTES) today announced that World of Warcraft®: Wrath of the Lich King™, the second expansion for Blizzard Entertainment's award-winning subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), will launch in mainland China on August 31, 2010.

"We appreciate the continued passion and support that Chinese players have shown for World of Warcraft, and we're working hard to ensure that they have a topnotch gaming experience when Wrath of the Lich King is released," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "This expansion contains some of the best content we've ever created for the game, and we're excited that Chinese players will soon have a chance to explore everything it has to offer."

"World of Warcraft is one of the most popular online games among Chinese players, and we believe that the new content in Wrath of the Lich King will generate even more excitement," said William Ding, CEO of NetEase. "We are fully prepared on all fronts to provide great service and support to all of the new and returning players throughout China, and we look forward to welcoming them to Northrend."

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King sends players to the cold, forbidding continent of Northrend, where the fearsome Lich King Arthas Menethil, last seen in Warcraft® III: The Frozen Throne®, works from his secluded citadel to bring all of Azeroth under his twisted dominion. Players will battle the Lich King's army from the shores of Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra to the seat of his power in Icecrown. In addition, players will be able to advance characters to level 80 and gain powerful new abilities while exploring several new zones and dungeons. The expansion also introduces a number of exciting new features, including expanded player-vs.-player combat options such as siege weapons and destructible buildings, as well as the game's first Hero class -- the death knight.

Since launching in November 2004, World of Warcraft has become the world's most popular MMORPG, with a current global player base of more than 11.5 million subscribers. For more information on World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, visit the official website at www.warcraftchina.com.

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition
+ Show Spoiler +
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

TL;DR - WoW is an awesome game (okay they didn't really say that) and the most recent expansion, WotLK, is finally going to be launched in China.

As everyone else in the world prepares for the launch of Cataclysm, the next WoW expansion, China gets to enjoy WotLK, which was released on November 13 2008 worldwide. China censorship *facepalm*

If I recall it wasn't a censorship issue, it was a power struggle between different branches of China's Beauocracy as to who got domain over WoW.

What the hell, how come some chineese guild named "StarS" or something like this got a world first Yogg-sarron without guardians, were they playing on US server?

You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Because of the problems in China over the release of WotLK, most of China's top guilds played on other servers. There is a Chinese guild in my server (which is a US server), and I think some other guilds also play in the Taiwan servers.

Yeah that is exactly the point. WotLK was released about 21 months ago worldwide, but are only going to be hitting the shelves in China in a week's time.

Is this common for games to have that big of a delay, or is this a special case for WoW/mmos/Blizzard? That sucks, I hope any blizzard fans were able to import foreign copies like how we do for japanese games or whatever here hehe

Well it's only China who gets the expansions delayed, legal and censorship-reasons i guess..

Cataclysm for US/EU is already in beta so they are quite behind :p

there was alot of issues with the game content in WoW. things like skeleton, corpse models and pools of blood were supposedly replaced with less grotesque models in the PRC version of WoW.

also the gov already forced many online games to implement real ID check. this isnt the blizzard RealID crap. i've seen games literally asked me to provide a Chinese citizenship ID. if you don't provide it, the game locks you out after 2 or 3hrs of game play each day.

This is also the reason why SC2 won't be released in China for forever since everyone's busy gasming over WoW .__.

Well arn't they in for a treat, they finally get to experience the worst expansion of any game (I'm trying to think of worse but it's damn hard) first hand. It must have been such a hard time waiting whilst reading how much everyone hated WotLK

Seriously? It just got released there? When I saw the topic title I was thinking that it had to be like "Wings of the Liberty... King," not something WoW-related.

EDIT: Oh look it says [WoW] next to the topic title, nevermind <_<

The censorship that game went through to be able to be released in china is incredible. I understand Blizzard is a business and wants to make money and share their games in as many places as possible but damn... So much of their game was changed I don't know how they could let someone do that to something they have worked so hard on.

Just as a first hand experience, I went to a PC bar in China, and probably 80 people were playing WOTLK, with authenticators.

Go go university students!

I just wonder how they will deal with ICC in china. I mean for some reason the Chinese have this huge gripe with bones, there has allready been placeholders released for things like the Frost Wyrm. But bosses like Marrowgar, Sindragosa or Lady Deathwhisper. Making an expansion about the undead without bones must have been hardwork for the censorship guys.

I don't know the specifics, but don't they have a rule against showing skeletons and zombies? Wonder how blizz is getting around that.

I know mtg cards get alternate art for the chinese market so they can be legally sold.

EDIT: lol sarnath'd

Lol chinese morrowgar! So much censorship.

Yeah StarS is a taiwanese guild. They have a really interesting system. They have 2k + guild members and have a huge tiered player rating system. The best 25 go in one raid, the next best 25 go in another and so on. On their Yogg + 0 kill they pulled the classes most suited to the fight from their huge playerbase and kill him with a perfect composition of skilled players.

Last time I checked china had nearly 4 million players; WotLK should hopefully allow blizzard to get more money to work on HoTS and their new MMO. Although, I hear that some MMOs are getting really popular in WoWs stead even though they are pretty low quality. (Aion esc)

Cataclsym is going to come out before the end of this year so it is gonna suck for them, having to wait so long. At least they get to do some heavy Ulduar raiding, Ulduar being the best raid of all time.
