K, I tend to ignore my parents constant harassment/lame attempts to try and get me to go to bed (like unplugging the modem, which makes me lol since I'm the one who set up our internet connection), but I'm getting that nagging feeling that staying up till 4:00 - 4:30ish can't be good for me.
I can't really help it; there's just too much fun stuff to do, and I find that I do my best work at these quiet times at night (reading, songwriting, any other passing fancy). Plus now that university's done for the year and I don't start work till July, there's absolutely no reason for me to get up before noon.
Even so, I've tried to stop, but every time I look at the clock to go to bed a little bit earlier, 3 hours seem to have gone by and it's 4. I'm gonna try again today, but I bet I'll still be up too late.
So who else is in my boat, and what the hell do I do now? My body's probably too adjusted to even try going to bed earlier. Better yet, what fun stuff do people like doing when the world's sleeping?
EDIT: As I could have guessed, many of you share my 'problem', if you wish to call it that. And since the world works in mysterious ways, the day after I made this post, lifehacker made an article on how to fix your sleep cycle, as thundertoss pointed out. So give it a read if you want to join me in seeing the sunrise one day, lol. I hear it's the bee's knees
Lifehacker's article
To make this even more fun, let's make a poll!!!
Poll: What time do you go to bed?before 2 (185) 27% before midnight (LAME ;) ) (156) 22% before 5 (139) 20% before 3 (93) 13% I don't go to bed (68) 10% before 4 (54) 8% 695 total votes Your vote: What time do you go to bed? (Vote): before midnight (LAME ;) ) (Vote): before 2 (Vote): before 3 (Vote): before 4 (Vote): before 5 (Vote): I don't go to bed
Thank you, FrozenArbiter! btw, it's 4:09 and I've failed, lol. I think I'm gonna try waking up early (on Thursday, I'm also a procrastinator) and really exercising it up. I'm even considering a morning thing like jogging. Who knows, maybe I'll meet hot chicks. Keep those comments coming!

If you stay up until 4am you'll not get up until midday and miss half the daylight hours. You're not getting any more time than you would otherwise and the timing you're having is worse. Listen to your parents.
|
im in your same boat. most of the time im in front of the computer gaming, surfing, messing around when im supposed to be sleeping..i really need to change this habit ,its not good in the long run.
|
Try being more active during the day (maybe sports/working out/etc.) so at night you will feel tired and go to bed at the right time. I think when we don't have anything to do, we conserve more energy and feel like staying up later because we don't feel sleepy. By tiring yourself out more, you can eliminate/improve your staying up late condition.
|
i have work at 8:30 and its 3 so i feel u
edit: you're gonna wanna start getting on a regular schedule as work nears because it's tough to adjust right away. start exercising during the day more regularly and you'll be able to sleep better

oh my god i do this all the fucking time
I find that if there's stuff I know that needs to be done sometime in the future i just stay up for the day and go to sleep a few hours earlier than a normal to compensate (like 7 or 8 PM).
And then I stay up late for no reason again after and the process repeats itself

before nighttime load up about 20 videos of SC and stuff or other stuff you like to watch download replays, etc.

I have the same issue as you do. I try to fix my sleeping schedule and sleep early (around 1-2), but I just time ticking away so fast when it gets to 2 or 3 AM. I'd suggest just trying to slowly get to bed earlier, or do stuff during the day so you feel tired when it's time to sleep.
|
i've developed a bad habit of doing pset late into the night. now that school's over, and i see 3am, i always feel like it's too early to sleep, so I'll just waste more time browsing the web.
|
The best way to get to sleep is just get all resolute and decide to do work. The minute I open up a textbook or start an assignment I fall right asleep.
|
There's only one way to fix this. When i used to stay up to 4am to watch korean pro games the only way i got to my normal sleep schedule again was to pull an all nighter until like 11 pm the next day. Then go to sleep. It's much easier when you skip a day. Also music helps me sleep sometimes.
|
The worst feeling one is trying to do the all nighter, staying awake as long as possible till u get to 10PM or whatever and pass out. lol probe got it in b4 me
The problem is when you give up around like... 6PM
|
It's a really bad habit really. I always sleep around 2-4am since high school started. I would always sleep through all the morning classes. But now that I'm in uni I actually have all my courses at night so I can get 8hours of sleep regardless of when I sleep. It'll be a pain to adjust in the future though when I have a 9 to 5 job.
|
I got that problem for quite some time, since i'm without work for a while. The time really depends on what's going on, like sometimes I start watching Proleague at 6am (usually I fall asleep during it) and sometimes I just go to bed around 3am and watch a movie, trying to sleep.
Occasionally I try to get back into normal rhytm by pulling an all nighter (like right now) but usually I fall back to the old habit after 2 or 3 days.
|
I can stay up till 6am if I don't have school, sometimes even if I do. This semester I've only got one day at which I start at 8:30 though, the two other days start at 13:30 and 12:30 so I can pull it off.
|
Before school ended I would go to sleep in the 11-2 block usually. Now I'm typically falling asleep around 4 am.
|
I do not stay up on a regular basis. Be honest. What do you do when you stay up??
I try my best to go to bed around 11:00 so i wake up nicely every morning with the alarm. its working alright and I feel quite good. This MIGHT explain why I find school ridiculously easy (high school anyways), I do not gain weight (people generally eat when they stay up).
|
Its 9.30 am here, and i haven't went 2 bed yet. But thats maybe becuz i woke up at 7 pm yesterday
|
I had a whole year with nothing to do. In this year I regulary went to bed after 2, sometimes after 3 and got up at maybe 10 or 11. Mostly I watched TV or read a book at night, I'm not a night gamer. But now with university and stuff I'm always in bed before midnight. Not because I have to get up early in the morning, it just helps me to get my stuff done and my best work time seems to be right after I got up, still sleeping. All the papers I wrote early in the morning got good grades. So it works for me. Also I got to bed early, because I'm really tired, starting at maybe 22:00, I know, if I could push myself to be up til maybe 1, I could go another 3 hours without beeing terrible sleepy. But I learned to listen to my body and go to bed, when I'm tired.
|
During training camps I go to bed around 9-10pm, during off sessions more towards 3am, gives me enough time to get home from the clubs, grab a snack and a quicky
|
Stayed up till 4 am last night. Im a complete trash at office today. T_T
|
Well sometimes I stay up to 5. sometimes I go to sleep at 11 and wake up at 2 and cant sleep till like 7am.. infact most times i go to sleep early enough but never sleep the full night
|
I have had a lot of problems with this kind of stuff because I tend to say I'll just do one more thing and then end up staying up all night. I've always been a light and late sleeper but having a computer made me start staying up too late...like right now.... Anyway, what I've found is that the best way to change from sleeping late morning through early evening is to stay up a day. Just stay up a day and you'll be tired enough to sleep the next night at a resonable hour (Sleep before 12). Not that hard to do either as you are already up fairly early into the day anyway so staying up the extra part is only 12 hours or so. After the first day go to bed early (Before 2am). I've found that it makes you super super tired the day after you first sleep a more normal time frame. (I also only sleep 6 hours on a good night so I dunno if this is specific to me as I end up waking up so early the next day). I hear that not eating for a period of time (Like the day) and then eating a large late supper and going to bed will soft reset your internal sleep schedule. Never tried it and it doesn't solve the issue that you will most likely not be tired anyway. As far as health not sleeping at night can have long term health effects because of your circadian rhythm which your chemical responses dealing with sleep follow. The one thing you need to be careful with though is that you just follow some kind of rythm. Not sleeping in the same time frames continually and espically changeing constantly is very bad for you. A study I read a while back had participants go to sleep 2 hours earlyer each day and then 2 hours later each day, sleeping normal inbetween for most accurate results. They found pretty drastic degradation of health for the time the experiment was held, blood pressure was the most specificly effected that I remember. (Wish I could find it but I have no idea where to even start looking). Makes sense to me as I find if I have a final or a paper or something and I sleep random times even for only two days I feel like crap.
|
I love going up 6am and I'm trying to change it to 5am. I get a lot of training done, prepare for school, plan out my day. Weekends are the exception though. I go to sleep around 10/11pm normally.
|
I don't have to be in for work until 2pm, so I usually stay up until insanely late. More and more, I have been trying to switch to a normal person's schedule so I can get up and run errands in the morning, etc. I just relapse so easily to sleeping at 5 or 6am though.

Starcraft is notoriously a late night activity. This may not be a place to try and gauge "normal".
So much so, I've even found on the whole- that my games durring the day are easier, and past midnight for the US starts to have the really good players on. I'm not saying that staying up late will make you a better Starcraft player- but the ones who REALLY take it seriously do end up in some serious late night sessions.
Normal is probably before midnight, and you'll find that pretty irregular around here, I would think. The best way, I've found, to go to bed early is to turn of the computer and read. Preferably in a fairly low, incandescent light. Also, don't sleep in too late! The temptation to keep rolling back over and sleeping more is also not helping. 7-8 hours you should be up and out. If your a Teen- I'd say 8-9. I have a degree in Psychology and seen MANY studies that teenagers need more sleep than adults.
GL
edit: Also try to get Exercise right in the "middle" of your day. Say you sleep for 8 hours, 8 hours before waking up and 8 hours before going to sleep- if you get good exercise or even go for a brisk walk, this will help you set your sleep schedule better. If you wanna go to bed 12, get 30min of cardio around 2. This will coincide with your natrual Temperature Maximum and make it easier for you body to fall into this cycle.

I cannot vote, as I go to bed after 5 almost regularly, LOL. Add an after 5 option! :D

i figured out i feel the same when i wake up if i had 4 hours of sleep or 8 hours. So yea, wake up at 7... means i can stay up till 4!

hahaha,
I"m staying up for no reason right now.
|
I'm in the same boat as you. I tend stay up to late and drink caffeine. Then i get mad at myself falling asleep at noon and wasting the whole day. I'll always try to just and stay up all day but just end up falling asleep later and later. I can get back on a regular schedule if i really try but I'll quickly go back to my old ways. That is why I'm browsing teamliquid at 3 a.m =]

I simply can't stay up all night like that, as soon as I see the sun coming my mind goes "oh shit time for sleep," and if I don't sleep I just feel absolutely terrible until I do. Thus, I enjoy shorter days much more for lans and such =P

Well everybody does, that's one reason this method is so so bad. You feel like complete shit for a whole day. Plus when you explain why you're staggering around like a zombie you look like a tool because people realize you literally cannot figure out how to sleep properly. It's like wearing a bib because you can't get this eating thing down.

Lucky you. Last year I went to bed never before 3 and most times past 4. Now I'm slowly working towards a normal sleeping schedule, and out of 5 weekdays I go to bed around 1 on 3-4 of them.

im up right now at 4:38am.. why? no reason... well... a lot of flew by as i was trying to learn how the fuck to use FL Studio 9.
ive been listening to a lot of trance, house, etc lately and wanted to learn.. but oh my good ness.. theres just so much..

I LOVE isolation/solitude and I got the the point of going to sleep when my family wakes up, at around 8 or 9 AM!
Seriously it's just so great to be alone sometimes. Now I've cut back to 2 or 3 AM. It's ironic that I am writing this now.

There's lots of good tutorials on youtube that helped me get the hotkeys/basics down on how to use the certain features on FLS.
Well back to topic:
I usually just read up on whatever I'm interested in, updates on projects I'm looking at, anime to catch up on, mangas/manhwas to read, torrents to download, etc. the trivial things that can't be done on a 16 hour day.
Also its more fun to stay up late, I get to watch proleague!

I go to sleep at different times every night, depending on when/if i work the next day or have to get up early. If I have nothing to do I'll stay up from somewhere between 2-5 probably, but if I have to get up at noon or earlier it's usually like 12 or 1. School nights usually 11

I go to bed between 23:00 and 0:00 on schooldays but on weekends i stay up longer then i want to.

Whenever I've been running bots for diablo or world of warcraft getting up in the morning has been so easy.. Just for the thrill of getting to look at your inventory freshly filled with gosu items.

I think the worst thing about being awake through the night, is that you lose track of time easily and tend to piss it (the time) away more flippantly, resulting in you being less productive.
Thats what happens to me anyway when i used too stay up late.
In addition, apparently vitamin D is only obtainable from sunlight, so if you don't get any sun your health may possibly suffer. I may be wrong about this but i think one of the reasons white people have white skin is to let in more vitamin D due to traditionally being from colder places like europe

I used to do that, but now I'm getting up at 7am for work I always seem to feel sleepy around 11pm. I usually stretch it out by reading books, or watching things on my laptop until midnight or 1am. I'm rarely up after then now. It's unfair to my body and my students to be going unable to really function properly.

Stayed up late from age 16-24 and regretted the effects it had on my health, social life. Now I have a job that starts at 5am. I pretty much have to go to bed early, I think having a job like that makes a big difference.

I just finished spring classes and have 2 weeks before summer classes start. I don't have time to sleep. I need go out and party (read: browse TL and play video games).
Its 5:30am and I'm not tired, why try to force myself to sleep when not tired! (readjusting my sleep schedule when work/school starts sucks.)

This. Having a solid job means having a routine.
However , that being said I work nights and study during the day. My policy is sleep whenever possible.

Oh God. All the horror stories of people trying to switch back to normal... at least I know it's not just me. I've had this problem for a while now, but jsut realised it a few days ago.

I generally stay up pretty late, but it depends what I'm doing the next day, how tired I am and what I'm doing, I will often go round to friend's houses and we'll sit up till 4-5 AM blazing it up and massgaming BW, if I go to a party it can last into the next day or even the day after that, if I'm just at home and I don't have anything to get up for I'll usually stay up till like 4 reading TL and other things, watching things and playing BW, if I have to get up early in the morning I'll probably go to bed about 2.

Funny for me to find this thread. I've been suffering for so long trying to fix my schedule, and every time I finally get a good few days of perfect wakeup and sleep times, something ruins it. I've tried many ways to wake up at a good time. This includes: -Say I wake up at 5pm and get tired around 6am, I will try and stay up another 12 hours to sleep at a good time. -I try biking really hard some days to make myself exhausted. Sometimes it works for that day, but I can't bike every single day. You know I've tried a bunch of stuff, but I'm not going to try and remember it all. My memory is horrible too(maybe because of lack of sleep lawl.)
I've been so happy when I go a week with good sleep schedule(this is rare,) but just the littlest thing can ruin it. Staying up late 1 night reverts the schedule completely! Honestly... It's depressing.
Oh, and I seem to have trouble sometimes not getting enough sleep too. My body won't let me sleep more than 5 hours sometimes even if I have been awake a ridiculously long time.
edit* oh yeah and I woke up at 8pm last night, and it's now 6:30 for me. Rough day ahead of me already.
|
I usually go to sleep about 10-11 pm and wake up at 6.
|
I usually do my university work late at night, around 1-3am but never wake up later than 9:30am, its hardwired into me .

I used to have a lot of problems with sleep. A big problem for me and most others with sleep is that there are a lot of misconceptions that people lead us into believing. I did some research and made a thread where I sum everything up nicely here. It's a long read but worth it if you have sleep problems and need to fix them.
|
heh im usually asleep by midnight during the week since I go to the gym before I go to work.
Depends on what I'm up to on the weekend. If I go out I usually go to sleep after 2 and before 4 (last train from the city is about 1:50 AM I think & ~1 hour train ride). If I stay at home (watch movie w/ girlfriend or just hang out w/ her) it's usually before 1....
|
This might sound crazy but this is how i roll, Im awake about 13-15 hours straight and then i sleep about 10-11 hours each "day" so i tend to always wake up 2-5 hours later then the day before >.< and this only works since im unemployed...
But when i was in school things where diffrent!!! i went to bed around 3-5 am and woke up 7.30 am and during the weekends i went to bed at the same time but sleept to like 6-8 pm ^^
and this is really really bad >.< but i cant seem to change because everytime i set my alarm i tend to turn it off in my sleep and wake up with my cellphone in my hands or under my body ^^ (and this is strange since i leave it about 5 meters away from the bed :S )

Before midnight on weekdays and before 2AM on weekends, but that's only because my parents make me.

Around 10-11:30pm because I wake up at 6:30am now because of my summer schedule.

I go to sleep ~3am and wake up 6:30 every day => (except weekends ofc)

when you have to get up at 6am to drive 45mins to work everyday, you will start going to sleep earlier.

Going to bed late has become a really bad habit of mine. I certainly do not think the time I spend late nights is even worth it.*yawn*

I share the same sentiments. That's why it's badass to go to bed early and wake up early! That way it's not like you're wasting a great portion of your day by waking up in the afternoon.
|
I don't think staying up late is a bad habit. Going to bed early and waking up early is just some stupid idea thats been drilled into us so we have more hours to work. Other than that theres no logic to it. Everyone's circadian rhythm is different and some need more sleep or less sleep at different times.
|
I have had a huge problem with this, during university i got used to go to sleep at 3 or 4am. Then i started working and had to be at work around 8 and i never could get up on time, because of this bad habit. I suggest to everyone to learn regular sleep/wake up habit, beacuse it helps so much and makes you feel better. Try exercise/workout at 5-6pm and then you will have problem to stay up past midnight.
This weekend i have done stupid stuff and since beginning of the week i feel like shit. I pulled an all-nighter on friday night, went to bed at 10 am - woke up at 3 pm. Another all-nighter on saturday night - went to bed at 8 am and got up at 1:30 pm. Sunday evening we've won the world championship in ice hockey (YYYYAAAAYY!) and we were drinking till 3 am. I woke up at 7:30 am and went to work - feel shitty and thrown off even now on wednesday. Only good feeling is that i won 3k EURO.
|
Usually during exam times I'm up until around 3am studying. But normally I'll hit the hay at around 12, I like to give myself at least 8 hours of decent sleep.
Never does feel like enough though.

Same here! It is currently 5:31 am and I am just killing time wathcing Stargate SG1 episodes, which I actually haven't all seen(or remember all of them at least) good old TV, on the computer woo.

I can't participate in the poll because I go to sleep just after 5am.
Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome - one of my many enemies.

I sleep at 12-1am. I can't sleep much later cuz i have to go to work. Also, I can't really find a good reason to stay up anymore. SC2 isn't cutting it.
|
In the past week i've went to bed at around 9am three times And I will again for the flash/jaedong MSL finals
Fuck yea starcraft
|
I'm normally at bed at around 8:30pm or 9:00pm. Do I win a prize ?
I also woke up at 4:50am :\

Not reading any posts before mine, save the OP, I will say:
I work from 11pm to 7/8/8:30am
I'd much rather go to sleep at midnight and have work at 6am, than go to sleep at 10am and wake up at 5pm.

i pulled an all nighter last night for literally no reason.

you're graduated college and your parents harass you on when to go to sleep? strange.
anyway, if there's no reason to get up in the morning, and you want to stay up late, what's the problem?
on the other side, it's good to get in the habit of waking up ~8 like a social, civilized human being. it can be a tough habit to break... staying up at all hours.

Lol no that was a mistype; what I had meant to say was:
I wish I could go to sleep at midnight and have a job at 6am until 2pm
instead of having a third shift job, and being unable to fall asleep until 10am XD

I usually find myself getting tired around 4-5 AM which is bad. My sleeping pattern has really been fucked up for quite a while. I realize it'd be much better to hit the sack around midnight and wake up around 8, enjoy a cup of coffee and get a really fresh start for the day. Instead of getting up randomly between 12 and 4 PM.
ps. Anyone got any suggestions how to fix a fucked up sleeping pattern? =)

I think part of the problem is LCDs and the constant need to be on the computer in the hours before you try to fall asleep.
In the hour or two before trying to fall asleep try to avoid using the computer.

yeah... except most jobs that pay a worthwhile salary typically start sometime in the ballpark of 9am, so it's not exactly stupid to base your sleep schedule around that.
I can't fall asleep til 1:30-2 during the week. I wake up around 8. Weekends, can't sleep later than like 10 unless I was up real late. bleh

I used to sleep like you. Getting a regular sleeping schedule was the best change I ever made in my life. You feel like you accomplish 2x more than you used to in a regular day.
|
my parents nag me all the time i would probably sleep at like 5 if it weren't for them ;o
|
I try to force myself to go to bed before 2, even though it doesn't always happen. I find I am way less productive the days I sleep in really late.
|
the more i sleep, the less i feel tired the minute i wake up the next day
but then, the more i feel tired and likely i am to sleep in class
its weird if i dont get sleep the night before i dont sleep in class
|
I always stay up way too late, i try to get my sleet schedule back to normal and just slip back into sleeping at 3-4am after like 3 days >.<.
|
I've just been getting back to a normal schedule after a year of not having a job, and having late classes.. so my schedule has been off and on.
As sad as this sounds... my long time gaming friend just got a new job as a programer and has a new schedule so therefore I got a new schedule since he's not up at 4 am playing SC II anymore...
Most of my life sleep has been tied around when other people are there.. my girlfriend didn't get home from work until 2:30 every day and my programmer friend was up till 4:30 am..., so therefore , I stayed up until 4:30, slept until 2:30 every day.. and then just gamed at night while she was asleep. Same thing when i used to play halo, my schedule revolved around the team mates...
Sleep has always been a tough one for me.. especially in high school it was a problem.. I used to stay up really really late on school nights.. think 4-5 am, then wake up at 6:50 to go to high school. I spent a lot of classes sleeping just cause I only did enough to pass I was never an over achiever in high school. I also worked 2 summers of construction with my father, and actually kept an extremely ridiculous schedule that almost killed me where I was staying up until 2, and then waking up at 5:30... just cause our day had absolutely no free time and I needed my gaming fix ...we would leave at 6:00 and get back at 6:00, then shower and eat... and I mean don't get me wrong it wasn't the toughest job in the world and Im not complaining, but Im trying to set an example for those that don't get enough sleep... it was a ridiculous 6 months of my life, cause I was actually working pretty hard, there were a few times where I felt on verge of collapsing and I don't suggest doing this whatsoever... if you are physically active try to get some sleep.. well if you are doing anything, try to sleep, it just makes you feel better
How many of you have pulled the all nighter and then played a tournament or some event in zombie mode =)? I have done this quite a few times, nothing big like the mlg events I attended I always had to make sure I was on a normal schedule for that, but I have done countless local events for Halo 2/3 in zombie mode... I actually play well in zombie mode cause I don't over think anything I just use muscle memory . I've noticed I need to be at full alertness to play starcraft though, so I usually watch vod's, live stream, Day 9 or examine replays if I am getting tired around 10-11 pm now.
Overall I think the point of my long post was, try to keep a good schedule and boy do I need a job
|
It's 7:51 AM and I haven't slept. I got high like 4 hours ago, pretty burnt out. Drinking coffee to try and wake up.
I always put myself through hell by not going to bed on time or at all.
|
I'm waking up at 8 am for work so I'm trying to sleep before 2 am these days. Doesn't always work out like that...
|
do not have a computer out when you go to bed. that is the worst possible thing you can do
|
After years of having a steady school and work life, I'm never up past midnight, even on the weekend. When you get up at 6 every day, you just can't do these things.
I may make an exception this week for Flash v Jaedong though
|
i usually go to bed just before 3am and wake up around 10 unless i have early class then i have to get up earlier/try going to sleep earlier.
|
Well, when I have school in the morning I go to sleep at around 10 pm, during the holidays like summer vacation and stuff I have really weird sleeping patterns. I would go to sleep anywhere from 2 to 6 am or sometimes I would go to sleep at around 7 pm and get up at like 4 am and start my day :D, I love being alone when I wake up.
|
I have no problem sleeping early but I have major problems waking up late -.-...
I can sleep from 9 to 10 to 12 to 2am but its almost confirmed I would wake up at 6 - 8. Latest I slept was 4 and i woke up at 10....God the feeling of sleepiness was annoying lol
The only times I stay up late is for work and darn was it hard to stay awake ==.
|
Well if it wasn't for TL (being so huge) I would be in bed already. It's reading blogs like this that keep me up all night.
A few years ago when I didn't have a computer (and thus nothing much to do) I would go to bed at a more reasonable hour like 2am.
|
On weekends I just sleep a few hours per night, no reason to waste time when you don't have school!
So I go to sleep around 4-5 am and get up at 10 am or so.
On weekdays I go to sleep at 12 and get up at 7. I'm also free on wednesdays which is my sleep in day with 10+ hrs of sleep
|
i sleep randomly... don't have a job.
|
I'm weird, I can't stay awake past 11 just because I'm so use to go to work and so on. But then sometimes on weekends I don't feel like sleeping till 4 or 5. But my internal body clock wakes me up at 7 and I just feel tired. If I do stay awake I pretty much force myself to go to bed by 2a.m. unless I'm out with a group of people.

Oh to be young and unemployed again. Weeknights it is bed time between 11:30 and midnight.

I'm a contractor and work my own hours. So not all people that stay up late are unemployed

I used to sleep at 4-5am but I try to sleep before 2am now.

Most contractors I know like working early and getting off earlier though(I guess it depends on the type of contractor you are though.)?
I am a person who can't sleep in anymore. If I sleep more than 8 hours I feel like a wreck(A lot more tired than if I got less sleep) in the morning.

go to sleep before 2
need to reduce it down to 12 - 1 AM imo

During the Spring Semester I was getting to sleep around 12-1am and waking up about 8 or 9 - it was actually damn near perfect.
Now that I don't have to anything(until I get a job at least) I'm staying up until 3-5am almost everyday and not getting up until 12-1pm. It's not ideal, but I personally don't see the big problem either. I normally don't do shit before noon anyways.
|
And I thought I was the only one.
For years I've had exactly the same issue, it used to be 3am that I would get to sleep. This was my school holidays it's been around 7 years I've been out of school. In those days I would pull all nighters like nobodies business. I like the way my brain worked when I was overtired. I can't do it now though as I'm 20 somethings and getting a little older so I will always sleep, if only for 2 hours. The times I'm awake to now can be anything from 3-8am.
I used to get loads of stuff done at these times. Now not so much, it just makes me so lethargic and I can't wait to get back into full time education. If I need to I find it no problem to adjust my sleep pattern, after a week my body will fall into it and feel better than ever.

It's not a bad habbit, some people are just "nighters" and some are not. I love the nights so I always stay up until 4-5 AM if I don't have to wake up early. If I have to get up early then I go for 1-2 AM.
I mostly play SC and study at the nights. Some people would be amazed at how much more efficient studying is at the night, everything is so calm and quiet.
|
i generally go to bed between 6am and 8am... but i get off work at 2am so it's a bit different

Some people have a delayed circadian rhythm and are most awake/productive at later hours. Look up Delayed sleep phase syndrome.
However while you may naturally have a delayed sleep cycle, staying on the computer will stimulate your brain and keep you awake. Try getting off the computer an hour or two before you go to sleep and you will probably actually feel tired unless you are on a really late schedule. Another thing is if you get no sunlight your body wont adjust to a normal cycle. Exercise helps too. I would rather train my body to sleep when I need it to rather than feeling like shit every morning.
If you want to kickstart your sleep cycle into a normal pattern the best way to do it is to wake up at the same time each day, and make sure that you do not eat anything 12-16 hours before you need to wake up. Then when you do wake up eat breakfast within an hour. Get some sunlight & exercise and after a couple weeks you should be almost totally adjusted to the new cycle.
I struggled with insomnia for nearly two years, but now I have my body trained and am in control of my sleep cycles. Trust me, you don't want to be someone who is always wide awake at 5am when they have to leave for work at 7.

i work till 1am, and i like to stay up a while after that... should make a "Later than 5" option, as I'm usually going to bed around 6
|
I stay up until 3am on work nights. Then I wake up at 8am and spend the entire day regretting not getting those extra 3 hours. When will I learn ;_;

It's funny that this thread pops up just as Lifehacker runs an article on the very same topic. It might be helpful to some of you. (And me!)
edit: whoops someone beat me to the link

I usually sleep around 10-11 and get up at 7. Go to class at around 7:50. I can't stay up late because I know it's bad for my body. It's like I'm disrespecting myself if I don't try to keep myself somewhat healthy.

This was a good article... it's much briefer than the one I wrote last year but it seems helpful and I didn't catch anything majorly wrong with it. + Show Spoiler +

exactly in the same boat as you, even the hours i go to sleep 4-00-4:30 are the same.
|
I usually go to sleep 1 or 2 hours later than the night before, and it rotates like that. I am a perfectly healthy individual. I usually do a 24 hour cycle every month or so.
|
I'm currently in that cycle now that my semester is over. I went to bed around 5 AM yesterday I think and woke up around 12:30 PMish. I honestly just surf the internet or play DotA or SC UMS Maps at those hours. I am tired but everytime I've tried to lay down, I just can't find a comfortable position and go to sleep and wind up getting up and waiting until I'm too tired to care about how I sleep.
The summer months are not helping in the slightest either. My room can get up to 85 degrees at night which is just unbearable. I tend to get better sleep in the winter.
|
I got the exact same damn problem
|
i noticed this being important when i started my internship (need to wake up at 6:00 every day) if i catch a good nights sleep i feel like i can take the world. If i dont ill most likely be half as productive.
|
go to sleep early if you're under 18, seriously. you'll regret it later in life if you don't. I got vertically shafted because I didn't do this. My brother is 6'6, my dad is 6'3, my uncles and grandparents are all well over 6'0 and I'm only 5'10 cause I went to sleep late and didn't eat well.

story of my life. i blame my roommate/my school... sleeping at 3 every night = -___-
|
I've been a night owl as long as I can remember.
When I was very young it would drive my family nuts. They eventually bought me a reading lamp and a steady stream of books and called it good as long as I didn't wake everyone up.
In school this lead to a lot sleepy mornings and afternoon naps.
In university I took the afternoon classes and everything worked out fine.
These days it works in my favor since I'm willing to take the night shifts and earn a little more money.
I do run into people who seem to take offense to such a late sleeping schedule. I assume this is some cultural hold out from pre-electric times.
|
ive reset my sleep schedule to going to sleep right after dinner ~5:00pm and waking up about 1:00am. this way i can be a night owl and get a full nights sleep. it has mad me feel a little bit weaker since i can't enjoy my time to the fullest as im living with my parents or a roommate.
|
I go to work at 8, I go to bed at 11. How is that lame again?
|
I gotta wake up at 7 am each morning, so usually i go to sleep between 11 and midnight. I still feel like crap in the mornings though -.-
|
Honestly, as long as it doesn't affect your work/school, who cares when you wake up or go to bed. The day has 24hours, if you rather sleep between 5am and 1pm instead of 10pm and 6am, what's the big deal?
|
I've been in this boat for a long time, started getting trouble sleeping at the age of 6, it was during the time I started learning to read and discovered subtitles on foreign television show, so I attempted to learn english this way, stayed up to maybe 1-2 during the morning, one fond memory I have was that I never missed "Married: with children" and learned the word 'fuel' from it.
at 4th grade I started pulling all-nighters because I couldn't sleep due to schoolwork and the pain of growing so fast.
Now. age 19, I don't even attempt to control it. Much like the OP I 'work'/'function'/enjoy life much better during the darker hours when everyone else is quiet, it may make me miss some school-hours but I won't let it ruin me.
Sleeping away a third of your life is overrated.

Also whenever I am really tired cause I only slept like 3 hours or something and actually do manage to go to bed early its like.. day1 I go to bed at midnight, day2 I go to bed at 1:30 day 3 at 3 day 4 at 4 fuck I'm back to normal
Gonna read through this whole thread when I'm back home, hopefully there's some good tips
