I grew up being taught by my parents to shower at night before I sleep. So I thought everyone do this. Because in the day, you get dirty. So you shower and sleep feeling clean and nice. Then you wake up to begin your day. Also, another reason is because for those who maybe gel/wax their hair, they have all this chemical gunk in their hair. I would never sleep on my bed and pillow with those nasty stuff on as I roll around in my sleep.
However, after coming to college, I learned a lot of people do differently. Many people likes to shower in the morning (mostly because they get bed hair) instead of at night. But I don't understand that because your bed will be all dirty because you were dirty and didn't shower before sleeping. I'd feel disgusted (no offense to anyone).
THEN, there are the crazy ones who shower in the morning and at night. I don't know where they find their time to shower twice, but yeah. So I am wondering when TLer's shower.

I shower in the morning because I feel like shit all day if I don't... as if I never really woke up. Also, my hair gets terribly stuck out of place and cannot be fixed unless I thoroughly soak it, even if I dump a shitload of gel in it.
Well some would argue that even if you go to bed clean, you sweat and exfoliate a lot during the night so you're not actually clean when you wake up. I just got used to showering in the morning, if I don't get that shower I won't be awake all day long.
I always shower in the evening. If not I feel sweaty/sticky and have trouble sleeping very well. It's harder to get to sleep and I wake up a few times during the night. If I do shower however I go to bed clean and relax and have a better rest overall.
In the morning I just dump my head in a washbasin of cold water so I REALLY wake up
when you shower, you'r not clean anymore after you wake up. During night people swet even tho they wouldn't feel like it. When sheets are dirty, you switch them. Also people swet during sex which often happens before sleep. Morning is the best time to shower.
I never understood how people can not shower in the morning. I mean you lie there sweating for 8 hours and the you just put on new clothes and go? Disgusting. I feel way less dirty after a full day in an air conditioned office than after a night between the sheets. If I oversleep and have to leave in a hurry and don't have time to shower I feel so gross the entire day.
That said, I am one of the crazy BOTH types. Must shower in the morning and usually another one at night after gym/running.
Usually morning, sometimes in the evening (no, I don't shower at NIGHT, that's when I SLEEP), if I have a particularly busy schedule next morning or something.
I do morning because it usually wakes me up and makes me feel all refreshed and clean. Im also the type that sweats a lot when he sleeps even if i wear only like boxers and have really bad bed hair where its all up and oily.
I have a friend and current roommate who do this which i think seems ideal. They take a long shower at night to feel all relaxed, nice and clean to sleep then do a quick shower in the morning. I should try this. Think it would be a nice way to get into a sleeping routine since i have trouble falling asleep. Heard though that taking two showers in a day might make your hair and skin dry.
I want to ask if people would add when they tend to exercise/work out also. Early in the morning before showering, in the afternoon, or at night.
Also I find brushing my teeth in the shower is convenient so everything just works out perfectly. I don't mind my bed being dirty, I'll just wash the sheets every so often.
I usually work out in the evening so on those days I shower 2x a day.
Voted nighttime, but it really depends upon what I feel like. I think probably 3/4 of the time I do it at night, and 1/4 of the time I decide to do it in the morning.
Kind of depends upon how I feel / whether I'm waiting for something to happen at night (like something at work, in which case if I'm just waiting for it to finish doing something then I shower while waiting)
I shower in the morning, to wake up. But sometimes in late spring, early summer I also shower in the evening because of allergies. When you have hey fever you should shower before sleeping and keep your clothes in a different room. Also I shower after doing sports, but I think thats normal.

Also both when I end up working out during the night.
Morning. Wakes you up and gets you clean for new day. Also resets your hair. I don't use any hair products so its no problem not to take shower at night.
Two to three times a day. First in the morning after I wake up. Second shower after I come home from uni or whatever day activities I do. Last shower around 30mins before I go to bed.
Always nighttime, because it just feels so much better to fall asleep after that. And in the morning, I just wake up feeling so out of it, why would I want to shower?
I shower at night, for the exact reasons that were listed in the first post. I never could wrap my head around the fact that most people showered in the morning when I first heard about it from friends and other people.
When I thought about this, it made sense to me that it might be a racial thing, since all my white friends would shower in the mornings, and all my Chinese friends showered at night. My family and friends are all from Hong Kong, where it's humid as hell, and it would just feel nasty to not shower at night before we go to bed. So I guess that showering habit was passed down from our parents to us, but in a region of the world where it's unlikely that you'll be sweating a crapload during the day from just doing regular activities.
I need the morning cos I sweat a lot in bed, as I think other people have mentioned. Another reason is it's an instant wake-up call if I didn't get enough sleep.
If I do something dirty in the day I'll have one at night as well, I'd love to make that regular (doing both), but the last couple of years of water restrictions makes me loathe to do that. The water restrictions have lessened now, but it's a mentality that has remained.
Interesting that no one mentioned the desire to shower after having sex. But I guess it's not too surprising on a website full with people obsessed with computer games.

The best thing to do after sex is to sleep. Showering would just wake you up instantly.
Nowadays I just shower whenever I either 1. feel like it or 2. have time. Usually though I shower at night because I share a single bathroom with a lot of people and waiting in line to take a shower is pretty lame.
Morning. I can just smell the sweat of the 8 hours sleep. It's disgusting. I sometimes like to shower at night though but only if i sweated a lot during the day
I don't know if this is the same for anyone else, but when I was a kid I'd always shower before bed, but now that I'm in college I shower in the morning. Weird.
Bathes are a total waste of water, the only times a bath would be great when Im sick or after a high fever. That comes to a grand total of less than 10 in my lifetime.

i think by bath he meant shower.
And I dunno how much water my shower takes... i sometimes stay up to 10 mintues in a shower, which can be quite a lot of water! :O

Didn't bathes actually take less water ? since you can have the shower running for 20 minutes. really depends on the showering time though

Showering for 20 minutes is excessive, by then your skin will get wrinkly. Majority of us take 5-10 minutes.
really it depends on the situation. Normally I shower at night, but if I wake up and need help getting fully awake I'll shower, or if I get up and don't feel a 100% a show usually helps. Or if I have something important to do that day I shower in the morning, But like I said I normally Shower at night.
I usually shower at night because I don't have time in the morning. I never feel sticky or sweaty when I wake up but I can understand how some people would feel like that. In the summer I shower in the morning and night because no matter what I do, awake or asleep, I sweat.
And the obvious after any workout or physical activity which would cause me to sweat during the day/evening.
sometim4ws in the morning and sometims in the night, i have no real regularity between them it just depends on how dirty i feel, but i don't go longer than 3 days without a shower
Kinda prefer it mid day tbh. My issue with night shower is I have sleeping problems that slight things mess it up, and showers were kinda doing that. I guess I am closer to morning but try to not do it *as soon as* wake up. Things just feel unpleasant around when I just woke up (possible due to lack of sleep)
Thats more a preference though, typically I just do it whenever it's convenient.
On April 14 2010 18:16 Disregard wrote: Bathes are a total waste of water, the only times a bath would be great when Im sick or after a high fever. That comes to a grand total of less than 10 in my lifetime.
I think the magic number was 7 minutes. If you spend more than 7 mins in a shower, you are using more water than a bath on average.
I always shower in the morning. Throughout my day, im going to be getting in close quarters with other people quite a lot. I want to be as clean as possible. If I feel im getting dirty, i'll shower again if practical and will always shower after exercise. If I shower at night, I end up with epic bed hair that requires a shower in the morning to fix. Showers also help me wake up in the morning.

I'm the complete opposite. I've never understood how people can wrap themselves up in a days worth of sweat and filth.
At least when I sleep I don't sweat. Anytime I've ever woken up in the night or got out of bed I've never felt dirty/sweaty. Then again I have pretty dry skin.
In the winter I shower whenever I feel like it, but in the summer when there are 50ºC outside I shower about 3 times a day (varies from 1 to 5, actually, based on how much time I spend outdoors). Summer in Bucharest is murder.
At night, i rarely have time to do it in the morning.
But i don't do it everyday, because i usually sweat very few. I shower at 2 days if i'm not doing some hard activity that does make me sweat. That's why i always sleep naked, i discovered this way i won't find myself all sweaty and sticky in the morning.
ive seen this debate between a group that was mostly asians, and pretty much all the asians said they showered at night and could not believe that people actually didn't do that. maybe because asians dont sweat as much (?) or something. or because it was in california.
Morning is the only way and if you're doing it any other way, you're doing it wrong. Unless you shower both before sleep and after (then you're just some sort of hygiene freak )
I just realized there are a lot of disgusting people walking around me everywhere who don't shower in the morning :| Ugh!
I used to shower at night after exercising, don't want to sleep feeling all sweaty and ick. Then I moved to my uni accommodation and discovered the room had bed bugs T_T;;; Thankfully the admin got rid of them quickly.
after that the thought of all the days I had these evil little hateful creatures crawling all over me at night and eating me, made me feel gross not showering in the mornings so i changed to mornings.
But showering in the morning means getting up earlier... And to those saying that you lay for x hours sweating.... Is it better to go to bed after 16 hours of walking, running and so on without shower?
I am for both types of showers but sleep>>>>shower in the morning so I stick to evening shower
I need to start off my day with a shower, or else I just won't feel awake. If I exercise/work out and get sweaty sometime during the day, I take another shower after that; but I always have to have my morning shower.
Morning, but that's just because of my bedhead and because I like feeling fresh and so clean clean right before I go out among people rather than before I go to bed. Basically I think as long as you shower once a day it doesn't matter when. When I went to the gym I showered afterwards, because working out causes undue filthyness and an extra shower is necessary. But I can't help but shower in hot water, so if I do it more than once a day I get dry skin and get all cranky :/
Why on earth would you feel all dirty and shit when you have a normal day without any physical exertions? If you work at an office you just wash your hands, brush your teeth and trust me, you'll be clean enough. I think lying there for 8 hours makes you way more dirty than being around the office/home all day.
Definitely morning for me. If I go to the gym/go running I shower right after so that's when I shower twice a day but that's like 1 or 2 times a week. Showering in the morning makes me all refreshed for the day. Like others said; not showering in the morning I constantly feel gross and not-awake.
Shower in the morning. I'm not much of a morning person and a shower usually gets the grog outta my head. Plus the morning is when I want to shave, groom my hair, etc and tacking on a shower seems convenient.
When I was still in gradeschool I'd shower at night, but I don't remember exactly why. Probably because my parents told me to and I was too young to be proactive about personal hygiene. As far as sleeping while dirty... if I feel really gross I'll take a shower before I go to bed, but that doesn't usually happen unless I workout or play a sport or have a lot of sex in the middle of the day (unfortunately a rare occurrence lately >.<).
If you shower at night, then you are maximally dirty during and after your workday. You've essentially been sweating for nearly 24 hours in the evening.
Besides, going to bed with wet hair will cause it to be in funky shapes in the morning, and no amount of combing will help it.
I used to do both, but I got kicked out of my house like 2 weeks ago and now I can only shower once a day. I chose to do morning, otherwise I feel grimy all day. It doesn't matter if I shower at night or not, I still feel gross and weird.
So while I agree with you about sleeping in a bunch of shit, I can deal with that. Feeling like shit for an entire day, I can't.
I sweat at night sometimes. Showering in the morning makes me feel so much cleaner. Plus it fits in my routine better. And it wakes me up so i don't have to worry about not having time for coffee/tea lol
I always showered in the morning, as soon as I woke up for high school. Helped me wake up and be nice and warm during cold winter days(nights). But if I did physical activity and sweat, I would shower before bed/after exercise. So I would shower twice a day
Now in college, it varies lol sometimes I would shower in morning sometimes at night, but honestly, showering in morning is much more convenient.
My hair gets horribly messy if I shower before sleep (even if I dry it) showering in morning solves all the hassle
In the morning... makes me feel good before going to work. I typically do it later in the morning if I'm going to the gym first... makes no sense to shower then work out and then shower again.
Morning, I got so used to it. Wakes me up good and resets my hair so I'll minimize the badness of bad hair day (which is everyday for me, my hair won't cooperate a bit). Also gives me a feeling that I'm fresh.
Then after school when I get home, since it's summer here and I really need to take a bath. But that depends on the temperature, when I don't get much sweaty, I just wipe myself with a wet face towel (also got used to that since childhood) and I feel brand new again.
I shower at night because I want to get the day's sweat and gel out so I'm not massaging gel into my face while I sleep (I move a lot). I rinse my hair in the mornings, and a good face wash wakes me up, so I don't need a whole new shower. I also still feel fairly clean as opposed to the night before.
I sweat a lot, like A LOT, while I sleep. I have double sheets on my bed just for that. Therefore altough showering at night feels good when I have a clean bed waiting, I dirt the bed at night with my sweat anyway. So I shower in the morning (also so I don't feel likes hit all day, like many others). I only shower at night if I just made myself a clean bed.

Oh I remember not taking a bath for a week during sem break...and family members didn't notice.
I shower 2 or 3 times a day, depending on how my day looks. Morning, then once after gym, and if i do alot of stuff again after gym. I'll have another shower before i go to bed.
Normally only like cuple minutes long though, just enough to get cleaned up.
I wake up at like 7:30 and I have to leave my house for school at 7:35 so I don't have time to shower in the morning. I usually shower after swim training and again when I get home.
for a while i showered at night because my grandparents had me do it that way, but once i entered high school i started to stay up late, so i started showering in the morning to wake me up and now i do both but i also don't mind missing showers when i don't do anything that causes me to get dirty
I used to do at night time ALL THE TIME when I was in high school and all to the point where if I DON''T shower, I would NOT sit or lay on my bed. Hell, sometimes I didn't want to shower at nighttime and I ended up sleeping on the floor of my room b/c I was that OD about it of "no-shower-no-bed" policy I kept myself. I cherished my bed THAT MUCH at home.
That being said, it all changed in college freshman year. I realized I could careless about my stupid cheap dorm bed and don't mind if I sleep dirty and all so I made this sudden transition somewhere along the way to shower in the morning before I go out or do anything. It kind of grew out to me years past and I hardly shower at nighttime anymore. So morning shower ftw! Of course if I don't shower in the morning, you will notice I turn into a complete crazy freak of not showering when I should have during the entire day...
I prefer showering in the morning, but every women demands the bathroom for 2 hours in the morning it seems. So I'm forced to settle for mostly night time showers during the week.
For me its morning or both. I would feel dirty if I didn't shower before I left for the day. I shower at night because I generally work out then so it works out well heh.
I would never go to bed with all that gunk from the day. I like keeping my bed as clean as I can. Showering at night makes me feel really good and I fall asleep better. It's really hard for me to fall asleep quickly if I feel dirty from the day.
First thing in the morning, otherwise my hair looks disheveled and I'd have to soak it in water to get it to cooperate anyway. Also after any physical activity where I am profusely sweating, coming out of a pool / ocean, sex, encounters with particularly disgusting hobos, before interviews, during sex, before going out at night, and after having sex in a hot tub.
For the night showers ... for which I'm a member ... it's not that I don't understand the benefits of showering in the morning (feel fresh, wakes you up). It's more that you're going to bed dirty and dirtying the sheets in a place where you spend 6-8 hours every day. And if you're having sex that makes it even more disgusting if you only shower in the morning.
So unless you clean your sheets every week or two ... it sounds pretty nasty to be strictly a morning shower.

Well some people work doing manual labor, so they're going to get every dirtier and sweatier outside working, and don't want to take 2 showers in the day. Not everybody gets to work in an office =P
I don't know if this is like a weird thing or not, but I am crazy about taking a shower with a girl. I think that's like the primo stuff. So I do it whenever I can with my girlfriend.

i'm a clean freak, so I take showers pretty often.. I normally like to shower in the morning, because liek a lot have said, it prepares u for your day. I don't really feel comfortable or focused or efficient if I don't get my shower in that morning. I mean sure, I can go for awhile during the day w/o taking a shower, but when it comes to going out, liek to a resteraunt or to the store or just seeing other ppl in public, i'll feel dirty w/o the shower.
Sometimes before work i'd shower (morning shower to start the day off) then after work, i'd be tired and greasy and sweaty etc.. so another shower would be due. During summer I used to shower twice a day >< I don't really think u're that dirty if u shower in the morning then go to bed @ night.. I mean, not like, Construction-worker dirty, where you have obvious dirt on ur skin etc. Also, can't really say that I agree w/ the "going to sleep w/ nasty, gelled-up hair" cause after many nights of being out partying.. u come home and just pass out ^ ^ and a shower the next day always revitalizes and invigorates you..
showers+sleep = an awesome thing. Can make u feel reborn.
before I go to bed! keeps the bed fresh & clean, and I have short hair so I only get minor bedhead. when I wake up, I'm good to go after some minor grooming. optimizes sleeping time
if you say that showering at night is bad ill cut chu
used to do it in the morning but I'd find myself taking super-long showers to try to wake up, it would make my skin all dry and cause all sorts of problems.
and im jk'ing about cutting. i dont want to cut anybody :D (except for loud gum smackers)

not sure what you do when you get in bed..but some of us dont get stinky when we sleep
^ what he said ... think about it ... when do you sweat the most, when you're moving/active, when you do get dirt on you, when you go outside during the day ... it's not rocket science. So unless you're using a thick fleece blanket in the summertime you won't be sweating like a pig unless you have some rare sweat gland problem and waking up each night soaked in your own excretions.
And if you shower before you sleep ... usually it'll take a long time before your sheets actually get dirty.
yeah, seriously. If you're sweating in your bed to the point where you need a shower, you need to lower the heat in your room or remove some blankets.
As for when I shower, it used to be during the night when I was younger but now it's whenever I feel like it. If I'm tired in the morning and have bed-head then I'll shower but if my hair is fine and I don't feel like shit, I'll go through the day and maybe shower in the night. I usually have a shower once a day in the summer time when I get sweaty from outside, and every other day in the winter (unless going to the gym of course).
I can see reasons for both showering at night or in the day. Even if you don't sweat and have showers before going to bed, bed-mites or other similar things will inevitably be found eating the dead skin cells or whatever you shed, so your bed isn't going to be pure just because you have showers every night. Similarly, if you smell like shit every morning, chances are it's because you smelt a little shitty to begin with before entering your bed.
Luckily I have a buzz cut... so I can shower whenever. Generally it's before sleeping though, and at summer camp two or three times a day depending on the temperature.

well, i shower at night only
i never sweat in my sleep (since its never hot enough), i piss when i shower and im bald. so i dont really have reason to shower in the morning.
having said that, i sweat during the day, i go to the toilet a few times, and i feel so dirty not changing my soiled underwear/sweatshirt when i go to sleep.
Showering in the morning. It's just a habit nowadays, and it helps me wake up. Otherwise I don't think I'm awake. Plus, as everyone said, you smell like shit after lying in bed for 8 hours or whatnot.
Morning, for the obvious reasons everyone has already said: you feel like crap the whole day if you don't. And regarding the concern of going to sleep messy, you interact with people during the day, not while you're sleeping.
I prefer taking a shower both right after I wake up and right before I go to bed. I can skip the shower before going to bed but I absolutely cannot do anything at all until I've showered in the morning.
If you think you don't sweat or smell after sleeping for 8 hours, you're wrong. You may not sweat as much as during rigorous activity, but you still sweat and excrete oils.
Please stay away from the rest of us clean people during the day ^_^
night time! helps me go to sleep afterwards. the only downside is sometimes I'll wake up in the morning and my hair will be sticking up because my hair finished completely drying in a weird position or something :<
edit: that is about 75% of the time. If I just got off work after a morning shift or something I'll shower again for example. basically shower at night daily, and also whenever else I think I could use it.
If you shower @ night, you are dirty all day long at school/work. Yes you get dirty while sleeping, you sweat, and shed skin cells during the night. If you don't shower in the morning, you go to school/work with 8+ hours of dead skin on your body not cool. Not to mention your hair has 8+ hours of grease buildup. Fucking nasty, and people actually go out in public like that?
If you shower @ morning, you are dirty when you sleep.
Which is better, being dirty in your own bed while you sleep, or being dirty out in public for the entire day? Not much of a choice there, shower in the morning ftw
Also, I get bed-head, so going to work looking like a mess is no thx

I will share with you an ancient asian secret. Of course we wipe clean. BUUUTTT, we like to go the extra mile. After we wipe we grab a small container of water in one hand, we put soap in the other, and then we pour water down and rub at the same time cleaning our sphincters in that fashion. Rinse and repeat. For me, I like to go even further than that and take a shower right afterwards.
ur logic doesnt make sense... the reason its better to shower in the morning is to clean all of ur dirt and sweat u may have accumlated over night covered up in so much stuff. thatz y u wake up take a shower and put on clean clothes. if its rly that big of a deal just shower 2 times a day

I don't get showering at night because when you shower after you get home from school/work, you're basically clean until you get under the sheets since you're in your own clean house.
I always shower in the morning to help wake up and feel nice and clean for the rest of the day. I only ever shower at other times if I get sweaty playing sports or something, but that's usually midday and not night time.
Have to shower in the morning or i cant leave the house because i feel so disgusting, after all that sweating and shedding dead skin under the covers it'd be hard not to.
I only shower at night after doing sports or dirty work and such, other wise it seems like a waste of water cause i have to shower in the morning. I couldn't imagine only showering at night
On days I have a morning class I'll roll out of bed and immediately leave for class and come back and shower in the afternoon. On days I don't have class I'll shower a few hours after I wake up, so its pretty much always in the afternoon.
I usually shower at night unless I'm gonna do something important the next day. My hair gets oily and looks like shit at the end of the day if i don't take a shower in the morning.
Night given that most of the time I get off work at 10 pm and feel disgusting after it and around noon, after class the days I don't work cuz I always wake up late so I don't have time to shower before school.
I see the argument for showering in the morning - it helps you wake up and makes you feel fresh for the day . However, I personally prefer going to sleep clean after a nice evening shower, and it makes the bed feel a lot more clean as well. It's easier to go to sleep when you feel very nice and clean in my opinion . Ya maybe you "shed some dead skin" or whatever at nighttime, but during the day you do much more active stuff that I feel gets you dirtier - and you're going to bed in that stuff ! Of course, a lot of people are talking about sweating while in bed and smelling like shit in the morning :r! Well, that makes me wonder what you guys are doing in bed late at night to be sweating so profusely! If I've done some exercise or something dirty though I'll take a shower whenever I can
I shower in the mornings mostly because I have long-ish hair. If I shower at night, I'd either have to blow dry my hair (which damages my hair) or sleep with wet hair (which is uncomfortable). With that being said, I used to shower both day and night, but I stopped doing that because it wastes a lot of water.
I don't subscribe to the culture of over cleanliness, there is a difference between 'clean' skin and healthy skin. If you over clean, you destroy the natural balance of the skin and leave it worse off. I totally understand if somebody wants to shower every day after working out or if their job is centred around a lot physical labour though.

When I thought about this, it made sense to me that it might be a racial thing, since all my white friends would shower in the mornings, and all my Chinese friends showered at night. My family and friends are all from Hong Kong, where it's humid as hell, and it would just feel nasty to not shower at night before we go to bed. So I guess that showering habit was passed down from our parents to us, but in a region of the world where it's unlikely that you'll be sweating a crapload during the day from just doing regular activities.
i take a nice long shower in the morning (because i skip my first class anyways) and a quick one in the evening. but i also forget to shower all the time so it averages out to about once a day

It's ok, it's my last semester at UT Austin, and I've recently discovered the amazingness of skipping my 9am class half the time and not caring about it. Woot for just needing to pass my class now!
