Also counting the 14 beheading' there were also 27 other deaths in one day in Acapulco. Outside the tourist areas, little violence occurs inside, there is a major turf war between drug gangs.

oh cool, I've visited other countries for just a couple of days, I now have the authority to judge them safe or not safe.

You really have to live there to know what's going on in any depth. A visit to a country will not get you enough experience to allow much judgment.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

ACAPULCO, Mexico – The body of a murdered man was found Monday on the main highway to Acapulco, bringing to 31 the number of people killed in the Pacific resort city over four days.

The unidentified man was shot several times in the head and found under a pedestrian bridge with his shirt pulled over his face, said Fernando Monreal Leyva, director of the investigative police for Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located.

Leyva said federal, state and local police planned to meet Monday with the military to consider ways to beef up security in Acapulco, where 14 decapitated men and two police officers were among the unusually high body count since Friday evening.

Most of the killings occurred in just a few hours from Friday night to Saturday in non-tourist areas of the city. But the officers were shot to death in front of tourists on Avenida Costero Miguel Aleman, the hotel-lined thoroughfare that runs along the bay.

Drug violence has increased in southern Guerrero state as factions of the Beltran Leyva cartel began fighting for territory after leader Arturo Beltran Leyva was killed by Mexican marines in December 2009.

Dec 15th 2010 Washington Post Article, makes one think of how much of the violence is fueled by the United States alone and not just the gang warfare going on:

Drug cartels have aggressively turned to the United States because Mexico severely restricts gun ownership. Following gunrunning paths that have been in place for 50 years, firearms cross the border and end up in the hands of criminals as well as ordinary citizens seeking protection.

"This is not a new phenomenon," Webb said.

What is different now, authorities say, is the number of high-powered rifles heading south - AR-15s, AK-47s, armor-piercing .50-caliber weapons - and the savagery of the violence.

Federal authorities say more than 60,000 U.S. guns of all types have been recovered in Mexico in the past four years, helping fuel the violence that has contributed to 30,000 deaths. Mexican President Felipe Calderon came to Washington in May and urged Congress and President Obama to stop the flow of guns south.

U.S. law enforcement has ramped up its focus on gun trafficking along the southwestern border. Arrests of individual gunrunners have surged. But investigators rarely bring regulatory actions or criminal cases against U.S. gun dealers, in part because of laws backed by the gun lobby that make it difficult to prove cases.

90%~ of the ppl who die are those dealing with drugs. The other 10% were those who just were at the wrong place at the wrong time. And it's sad to being concerned about where you go all the time just to not be a part of the 10%.

Well, 10% of 30,000 in just a few cities is still astronomically high, no?

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – A poet who led protests against the unsolved killings of women in the violent border city of Ciudad Juarez has herself become the victim of a bizarre slaying, her body found strangled and her left hand severed after a night of partying with three teens.

The body of Susana Chavez, 36, was left last week in the center of the city but was not identified until Tuesday, authorities said Wednesday. Her head was covered with a bag, and the cause of death was strangulation.

Three suspects, all 17, are in custody, including a neighbor, who told investigators that they had gotten into an argument with Chavez. Because they were intoxicated, they found it "easy" to kill her, said Arturo Sandoval, a spokesman for the Attorney General of the Northern Zone of Mexico.

MEXICO CITY – A total of 34,612 people have died in drug-related killings in Mexico in the four years since Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared an offensive against drug cartels, officials said Wednesday.

The killings reached their highest level in 2010, jumping by almost 60 percent to 15,273 deaths from 9,616 the previous year.

The rate of killings grew in the first half of 2010, but then stabilized and began to decline in the last quarter of the year, federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire said.

Calderon said Wednesday that 2010 "has been a year of extreme violence."

We understand that you can live here or there for a day or even several years. No one is saying bullets are flying all over the place. Just like people who underplay H1N1 because people weren't dropping dead left and right.

VERACRUZ, Mexico – Twelve suspected drug cartel gunmen and two soldiers were killed in a nearly six-hour gunbattle in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, authorities reported Friday.

About 100 soldiers, marines and police located a drug gang safe house in the state capital of Xalapa and surrounded it late Thursday, said Veracruz state Public Safety Secretary Sergio Lopez Esquer.

The gunmen resisted fiercely and a standoff ensued, with authorities firing tear gas into the house and exchanging fire with those inside.

Other gunmen shot up homes and cars in surrounding neighborhoods, apparently to try to draw soldiers away from the safe house.

Security forces finally stormed the house early Friday and seized grenades, ammunition and vehicles, army Gen. Rene Aguilar Paez said. There were no arrests.

The soldiers were responding to tips about armed men traveling in convoys of sport utility vehicles in the area — a hallmark of Mexico's drug gangs. There was no immediate information on which cartel is suspected to have been involved.
