More osu! love!

Here's a video of the top20 osu players of 2010. I make it short: 95% of these actions are just like WTFSRSLY?

so you need to download beatmaps 1 at a time? there isnt a large list that comes with the game?
If you say "plz" because it's shorter than "please," I'll say "no" because it's shorter than "yes."

And the star system is a bit flawed, some 4 star maps are clearly harder than some 5 star, and a 5 star map can be doablo, or it can be what feels like impossible...

Yeah you have to read more on the difficulty description

5 star hard vs 5 star insane is very different
of course there are the 5 star impossible/uninstall levels too

oh wow I can't believe they can play like that with flashlight
You have to practically like memorize the beatmap
and osu! commentary by beatmappers xD

I know that, but I tend to get most of my maps from packs or when playing online, so I don't really check it on their site, and I haven't found anywhere ingame where it shows the difference.

Star rating is meaningless, eyupstars are calculated based on density of the notes, while the in-game editor's automod tool thing determines difficulty based on the distance between notes in terms of actual spacing on the grid as well as spacing on the timeline (so stacks/streams = harder difficulty, obviously, and faster songs = even harder).

I've made normals that are 4+ stars that are stupidly easy but just rated high because the star rating is retarded.

And I've played normals that are 2-3 stars that are more like normal+ or hards because they have wide spacing.

Edit: Oh also the difficulty settings, forgot about that. Since they split approach rate and overall difficulty now you can really inflate/deflate the star rating by reducing the sliders drastically. One or two ticks usually doesn't do anything but if you start going above that you can definitely affect not only the star rating but the max score; I've done this to make some of my maps' max scores fit under ranking guidelines, as well as the reverse in order to make some normals/hards worth over 1 mil points so it wouldn't be a waste of time to play for the scorewhores out there.

Ugh so much flashlight, it's such an unimpressive mod since it's just memorisation, there's so many more impressive DT/HR clears imo. Too bad if they made a top20 plays of 2010 it'll just be all cookiezi for 20 of them.

Not all, ShaggoN and Rucker can give Cookie a run for his money for sure, and probably taNa too

More impressive to me at least since they use mouse, and taNa is mouse-only (no keyboard), not sure about Shag, and I'm pretty sure Rucker is mouse + keyboard

Cookie is tablet + keyboard, and while his scores are extremely good it's generally considered easier to play with a tablet than it is with a mouse

FL isn't an unimpressive mod to me, it's ridiculous when you combine it with hidden or a 9 overall/approach rate beatmap, or a map with a lot of jumps. Plus when you factor in players like ShaggoN who FL a ton of difficult maps, think of how many beatmaps they've memorized over the course of their time playing osu. Watch Lybydose's FL replay on Masterpiece, or Lunah's replay on Shounen A and then tell me it's not impressive. Yeah it's memorization but you'd be surprised how many osu players can't play with FL, including some of the top players (Cyclone told me one time how he can HD on a lot of maps, but he can't FL anything to save his life lol)

The thing about FL is it can be used on pretty much every map, whereas there are comparatively much fewer maps that can be played with HR/DT, so FL/HD are much more popular mods (and also don't destroy your accuracy). Why use DT and get low accuracy like 91% on some song if you can 99% it with FL? They give the same score multiplier after all. Same with HR and HD.

I think nearly anyone who can fc a map can fc a map with FL, as long as they bother to do it enough times to memorise it - however there are very few people who can do it with DT or do it with HR+HD, which is what makes them more impressive.
Sure the masterpiece flashlight is crazy impressive, but in the end it's still memorisation(granted a stupid long amount in this case, and no one else would ever bother to do it), but "raw skill" wise I think the hr+hd clears are higher. I guess what I'm arguing here it essentially the map is unchanged with the FL mod, while the actual "skill" difficulty is significantly risen with a mod like DT/HR+HD added on to it. And honestly a 91% DT on some impossible map is a lot more impressive than a 99% FL, obviously accuracy whoring and scores aside.
Yes there are a handful of people who can re-take #1's from cookiezi, but if cookiezi wants it back he gets it back. I'll quote something I heard today concerning this; "with cookiezi, it's a matter of interest, not ability." Not to say rucker and tana aren't amazing, it's just cookiezi almost has no skill ceiling.

I think the reason that there's so much FL in Lunah's vid is that Lunah plays a lot of FL, so it makes sense that he'd include it.

Personally, I really dislike FL, for similar reasons to Mez. However, I think he underestimates how hard it is to play with FL. I used to waste my time with that mod, and memorizing maps is really really difficult. Lybydose's Masterpiece replay is incredibly impressive to me because memorizing a map that long and complicated is super hard, and it would take me at least a thousand tries to memorize a map like that.

The ability to memorize maps is a skill, just like clicking fast or recognizing patterns fast is a skill. While I don't really think that highly of such a skill, there is no doubt that people like Lybydose are insanely talented in their own way. Dismissing that talent by saying that FL is "easier" than DT or HR just because it does not involve clicking fast or clicking accurately is incorrect. FL just involves a different skill, and whether you respect it or not there's no doubt that FL players are pretty gosu.

I don't like FL that much because I can't do it and it has a slightly higher score modifier than HR+HD does

But I still think people who can FL are extremely skilled; perhaps a different type of skill like triangle said but still definitely a talent that not many osu players have. Memorizing maps, especially at the insane level (a true insane, not a kioukiou free points 5 star map) is pretty difficult, which makes those who FL with a low playcount on the map even more ridiculous. Masterpiece isn't even on Lyby's most played list, that to me is extremely impressive. I've played Justice to Believe like 600 times or something and could never come close to doing it with FL on, and I have a fairly decent memory (or at least I'm good at memorizing stuff for class lol).

Regarding "impossible maps", I would agree that a 91% DT score on one of those would be a greater feat than a 99% FL, but both are ridiculous achievements if the map is truly that difficult. Most "impossible maps" are difficult purely because of their bpm, so increasing it by however much DT increases it by (40%? 60%? I forget and can't find it on the forums anymore, I know it's not actually double though) does make it significantly harder.

On a slower map that isn't in the "impossible" category, a low accuracy DT score just isn't impressive to me compared to a very high accuracy FL because I feel that some players could definitely clickspam their way through the map and achieve accuracy in the low 90s on it. That's not a mark of skill to me, it just shows that they can mash their keyboard fast.

i started playing osu a few days ago when someone mentioned it in some other thread about clicking dots on the screen or something. I'm enjoying it quite a bit, even if I'm bad at it... getting better, though.

it astounds me how ridiculous some maps can be. i play MP with friends sometimes and we do max difficulty because we can't fail... a lot of them are... sad.
i am a logical person.

It isn't possible to just practice a specific part of a song is it? Stuck at like 85% and haven't had enough practice that far in to memorize the keys yet... grrrrrrr
