I can't imagine alternating between buttons for regular hits, that seems like it would only be necessary if you can't physically click as fast as you need to for a song. I switched from Mouse only to Mouse + KB shortly after I started, and I found that it made a huge impact very quickly. I was pretty bad with mouse only, although I was improving, but when I switched, after the awkward while where it felt weird, I got far better than I was mouse only extremely quickly. I started off not alternating very well at first, and I felt that it impacted my ability to time things properly. Then I moved on to alternating all the time regardless of whether I strictly needed to, and that worked quite nicely for me for quite some time. Recently I've moved back towards only using X when I need to due to speed because for some reason my accuracy and speed of pressing Z has gotten far better than it used to be. On February 23 2012 16:31 Xafnia wrote: Don't use mouse for clicking ever, and don't do click+x. If you play mouse+kb you will get used to it pretty fast anyways in the long term it is much better. Very very true. As a technical explanation of what makes Mouse + KB better: It's well known that to some extent, one half of your brain coordinates movement on the opposite side, playing Mouse + KB allows one side of your body to concentrate on controlling the cursor position independent of timing, and the other coordinates finger movements on the keyboard independent of cursor position. This effectively means that you are concentrating on two completely unrelated tasks at once, rather than one complex task that involves calculating timing and cursor location at the same time. Breaking things down like this is easier for your brain to handle. When I played mouse only, my movement was very jerky and felt like I was seeing a note, moving to the note, then trying to figure out when to click, then looking for the next one. After practice playing Mouse + KB timing feels natural for the most part, and my mouse movements are far more fluid (and I noticed that change almost immediately after switching, although it felt a bit weird, my mouse movements were suddenly much more fluid). I'm not trying to say that Mouse + KB is the only way to play, but I'd say that playing Mouse only or something like Z/lmb is putting you at a disadvantage in many ways. I've played music games for probably longer than any other person in this thread, and I feel like if there's one thing I've learned over that time, it's how to improve at these things from starting out terrible. Finding the right input setup is extraordinarily important. When I played stepmania, I moved from 1 handed on the arrows, to a 2 hand setup on the arrows (indexes on up/down, middle on left right), and then on to spread ZX >? (that was my choice because <> didn't work, due to "," representing a separator in the settings file, and not working as proper input) Once I started playing spread, everything just made so much more sense, and felt far more natural. Bear in mind that I had been playing SM for years before I made the switch. Recent accomplishment images + Show Spoiler + First try. Not a bad one at that. Second try, failed first one. How the fuck did I pass that? Bleh, could have FC'd that. It was one of those damned "note stacked on a slider" spots, not even a triple stack, just 1 note on a slider, and I fucked my timing up. WTF. How the everloving fuck did I pass this. I'd like to point out that at 240 BPM a 16th note is exactly 1/16th of a second, therefore the streams in this are 16 notes per second... That's pretty damned fast. Another WTF did I just do moment. I actually passed this second try. Apparently I'm actually good at fast jumps...

Can't post to impressive results though, my osu name is Takuna2 I recently try to switch from mouse only to mouse+keyboard and it feels really weird. How many games took it you guys until you were cmfortable with the new method? And, which difficulty should i take when training? Songs i have problems fcing or songs i have problems surviving? Somewhere inbetween? Greetings

And dont make the same mistake as me. I just played the songs i could survive and i regret that i did so. Do it like the asians and play the hardest from beginning. Also try to map a song even if u dont finish it. It helped me alot to understand the game better. And i had a playcount over 10k at that point :o

Somewhere inbetween? Greetings I started with mouse + keyboard and I was pretty bad for a couple of months before I could start playing some insane level difficulties. I also started on normal level difficulties though, so that probably stunted my growth a bit. Seems like most people here just jumped right into the harder stuff which is probably a better way to do it overall, I'm just a huge accuracy whore so I dodge maps that I can't FC with good accuracy lol. Play stuff in between songs you have problems FCing and songs you have problems surviving. If you just drill stuff with mass 200+ bpm deathstreams and die after 10 seconds it's not going to help you get better. Most importantly though you should play a large variety of maps and get used to reading all sorts of patterns. It's good to have favorite maps but if you only play the same 10-15 songs over and over you won't improve that fast.

Yes, switching takes time, but it takes different amounts of time for different people. When I started playing, I had to start at the EASY stuff, the .5 star and 1 star difficulty maps. I was that bad. I worked my way up by consistently playing a mixture of songs I could handle, and songs that were just above my skill level. I ALWAYS advise people to play maps just above what they think they can pass. So, if you find a map that you die on, but feel like you might have been able to pass it, with a few tries, then that's the sort of map that's good to practice on. It doesn't matter if you actually CAN pass it with a few tries, but the fact that your forcing yourself to deal with something just above your skill level makes a huge difference. I'm not saying only play those, I usually play a mix of stuff I like to play, and stuff I feel is a bit too hard for me, usually with only 2 or 3 really hard songs per session (smaller sessions, I don't usually play massive amounts of osu). Also, I have less than 10k plays total. And I've moved up from .5 and 1 star songs to playing everything but the BS hard insanes. Second try today. Fun as hell, but god damn is it tricky.

Yeah this is the best way to do it pretty much. You can also play mp so you don't tank your acc though.

Eventually this issue will be nonexistent with osz2 But pretty much the entire community dislikes the idea of osz2 since you won't be able to delete skins/BGs/storyboards so who knows if/when it will actually come out

I wouldn't worry about it, but it's probably illegal in the states, depends on what country you live in. On February 25 2012 09:46 dUTtrOACh wrote: Probably. On a less controversial note, I'm beginning to map (attempt #3) and actually liking it now that I'm setting out time to really dig into the tool set and figure things out. Looking at other maps in the editor helps more than I thought it would.
