All servers go down when a new update is out.

Ok so I just started playing again since TF2 went free to play and I have to say the skill level is so much lower. I remember TF2 being brutal to get into when I was playing. Now, I'm always top of the team even if I'm dicking around with a class I'm bad at.
Anyways, here's my summary of what has happened with the pub scene (Although my old servers are still decent).

There are way too many snipers now and their new gear is just silly, I can't even find good snipers with all the headshot blockers and junk. I really have to emphasize how many snipers. It is a consistent 1/3rd of the team on average throughout the game modes. That used to be common for 2fort, but for everything? Holy crap.
Spies are a weird 50/50 mix of completely awful or actually pretty good. Regardless they all score huge points because the teams are such low skill that they can't kill the spies effectively at all. Also, some of the new spy gear is really good (I wouldn't say OP, but nice).
Medics, there are usually none until one team gets a medic heavy pair and the other copies. Sometimes I see some veteran/dedicated medic players and that is great because they seem to encourage other players to go medic. Still, it has been pretty common for me to play several maps without seeing a medic. As for items I think they are all pretty good if used right.
Soldiers all seem to be using the blackbox or the cow laser thing. The laser thing seems amazing if used by someone who isn't an idiot. I wish I saw soldier's using the various buff devices they have.
Demoman has some cool new items but I personally think that the charge/melee combo is pretty bad compared to demo's normal stuff, which isn't surprising. Still, I see some pretty cool uses of the alternate melee weapons. I've been having fun with the stickbomb melee weapon that blows up on first hit.
I'm so happy for the heavy's running gloves, but most of the time I still use the KGB as they are less situational considering how pubs usually run. I'm not really a fan of the other items for the heavy.
I haven't really had much experience with any new scout items. The best scouts i see still rock the scattergun which doesn't surprise me.
Engineers are a lot better with the new items. Camping engineers rock pretty hard with the frontier justice saving them from spies and the wrangler just has a lot of uses. Even on the attack the miniturrets are pretty good, especially if you are good with your shotgun for support. Besides, cheap miniturrets and repositioning forward dispensers goes well together.
Pyros haven't changed much, but at least they generally use airblast well and they get nice kills on the noobs who rush straight ahead all the time. However, usually you only get 1 good pyro a team if that. The two or three other pyros are just cannon fodder and don't spy check, so meh.

I'd play a few lobbies with you guys. I don't mind playing on American servers every now and then. I'm pretty experienced with competitive TF2, my team are in div4 ETF2L and looking to go div3 next season.

I have never played any TF2 competitively but I would love to play some games with TLers.

Playing with TLers would be great. I would definitely say that I am among one of the best spies/snipers on the pubs, because really most people playing the classes are terrible.

You really, really, don't want to play on Lotus.
1. The owner is a major asshole, I was in Lotus for 9 months, and was a recruit before that for a month. This guy is possibly the most annoying and socially retarded man you could talk to. I'm not sure how many servers he has still, but in the peak of lotus we had 10 full servers at most times of the day, and this leads me to point number two.
2. The game has so much more to offer than 16v16. You matter so much more in a lower pop server, and there are plenty of them out there.
3. Lotus Clan in general only has dicks left in it, all of the good people have quit, multiple generations.
I'm sorry for ranting, but this guy really is in top 5 of my most hated people that I've met, and if can get people to play on servers that are of higher quality I would.
I played a lot for about a year and I occasionally pub around in 24 slot servers, so ya...the game doesn't have unlimited replayability without competitive play (even that gets boring, at least it did for me)

lotus has a decent amount of 24man servers now
i havent had any problems with mana, played with him a few times although i didn't try to join the clan or anything

I'll just say this about Mana, when we entered into a tourney he HAD to be in the A-team (he's terribad) as heavy and without a mic. He doesn't care about the game in the slightest. I have 9 months of stories I could rant about, but that's inappropriate. We even made a secret clan within L | just to get away from Mana.
On a side note, I'd be interested in playing with TLers, preferably in 6v6 PUGs, but I have to scrape the rust off of my 400 hours of play .

He was a perma heavy 6v6.....yup. Keep in mind the strats back then were pretty different from today, but it was still a wtf moment when he gave that command...

I'd play some 6v6 with other TLers ^^ Haven't played in a pretty long time though so I'm terribad. But it'd be a lot of fun I think.

I've only really seen perma heavy work on Gullywash. And I don't even know why it works on that map. The pocket soldier tends to go heavy on gully, but my team never seems to do that. Probably because I hate heavy and I'm the pocket soldier. :p

I play on Mana's dead server: Arena. I don't think he's ever been in it more than maybe 6 times in the past 2-3 years I've been on the server(s) (before I did a lot of 2Fort).
The Lotus servers are terrible racist fucks, but that's why it's funny. It's even more funny on Arena where everyone is nearly terrible, so I always look guuuuuuud.
