This event is beginning TONIGHT, March 11th @ 8:30 PM EST

How to sign up:
The reason I chose this particular site is due to the fact that it is extremely easy to register. It literally requires a username and a password and an e-mail if you happen to forget your password.

To register with playok.com just simply go to: http://www.playok.com/intl/en/register.phtml.

How to play:
On Thursday, to get into the channel around 8:30 PM EST, it's an easy process.

1. Go to: http://www.playok.com/intl/en/euker/ and log in with the account that you have made through playok.com
2. Choose the channel: Morliny

Look for the player named Kingkrumb and you'll be set to go.

Below is the initial information:

Hello TL,

My name is SpaceDominator and I have been around the StarCraft Community since the original StarCraft Beta. However, besides my own love for playing StarCraft, my other biggest interest is that of card games. Since I was rather young, I used to play a ton of different classic card games such as Euchre, Hearts, Spades, Bridge, Pinochle, etc.. and loved playing them for fun and analyzing the strategy to them.

So over the past few months over at BlizzForums, I have held a weekly card game night where we have switched up and learned and played a new card game each week. We have played everything from Euchre to 3-5-8 to Barbu to Agurk to Cribbage to Spades to Whist to Hearts, etc.. We've had a good turnout of people each week and we've had a lot of fun each week with it.

So what's the point of me bringing all this up? I'm inviting TeamLiquid to take part in my Euchre Tournament that I will be hosting next Wednesday, March 18th @ 9:00 PM EST. I thought it would be pretty fun to bring people from different communities together to compete in a simple to learn card game that is pretty quick. The entire tournament will last approximately only 75-90 minutes total.

However, the thing is that this event isn't only for players who know how to play the game of Euchre but it is also an opportunity to learn how to play Euchre. For those of you that are interested in learning or just playing some friendly warm up games, I will be hosting starting on Wednesday, March 11th @ 8:30 PM EST a night where will be teaching Euchre and also forming the partnerships for play the next week.

Full details about the two nights are available at: http://www.swoopzone.net/bf/euchretourney.html

If you have any questions or would like to me to give you a reminder about the event(either through AIM, PM, E-mail, etc...) feel free to let me know in this thread.

I thank you for your time and I am looking forward to seeing TL represented in the event.

pretty neat idea. I won't have time in the next week, but as you seem to hold these events on a regular basis I'll be sure to participate in the future.
This is my truth, tell me yours!

Yeah definitely distant_voice. My original intent wasn't to advertise BF's Sports and More Board, but usually every Monday, I'll post the newest game night information in that part at: http://174.34.157.8/forumdisplay.php?f=82(for that Wed).

Since you're from Germany, I have to ask though. Do you know how to play Skat? I've always been looking for someone that could explain and teach us how to play it as it seems like it's a pretty fun game but some of the rules seemed a bit odd to me.

Glad to hear someone likes the idea.

Oo this sounds fun.

I play a lot of euchre, spades, hearts, poker, at a pretty good level.

If anyone is interested in partnering for this PM me or respond here and we'll get in touch ^^

I would be utterly shocked if you two were the only ones here at TL that know how to play Euchre. If you are worried about the rules at all reading the thread, check out: http://www.dougshaw.com/euchre/rules.html, they do a great job of simplifying the rules and if you had any questions, let me know in here as well.

If you're worried about time, most Euchre games last about 15-20 minutes, which is another reason why it's a perfect card game for a tourney/event like this.

Glad to see some interest though right off the bat!

If you like Spades, I think you'll like Euchre. Spades is a fun game but it just can take a really, really long time. I'm surprised though that if you like Spades, that you wouldn't like Bridge as they are very similar in nature, with the only additional complexity being the bidding and the fact that the trump suit changes.

Definitely! One thing that we've done a lot in the past is just rotate through partners just to play games. Especially this week, you're more than welcome to come alone and join us. In terms of the tournament next week, in the room that we will have designated for it(designated by the playok server), you can set up your partnerships before the day of, so if there was another solo player needing a partner, you could set yourself up with one.

I love bridge as well. I love to play it and I really find it to be one of the most intellectual card games out there. The only issue though with Bridge is dealing with the bidding systems as everyone learns their own methodology despite the standardization of these systems. We have played Whist and Bid Whist as part of my weekly gaming nights which is essentially the playing of Bridge without the grandiose bidding.

We were originally planning on playing Bridge as one of our nights but we had such inconsistencies with people showing up for Whist and really a lack of interest in learning the bidding.

ah, bidding is THE great art in bridge. I've played whist too, don't know about bid whist but I'd imagine it's somewhere in between? Well I'm intrigued but I'd probably be asleep around the time but we'll see ^^.

Honestly, we can work with that to get you to learn how to play Euchre, and to be honest that's part of the objective of these nights is to teach people how to play these fun card games. We can go more basic, if we need to. Really, there are only a few key terminologies that you need to understand ->

1. Trump -> A trump suit in any card game is what I would call the "super suit." Any trump card beats a non-trump card. So if Spades were trump any Spade would be any non-spade.

2. Trick -> A trick refers to each player playing one or more cards in turn.

In Euchre... in particular a couple of key things:

1. Left/Right Bower -> The most complex part of the game of Euchre. In Euchre, you only play with the Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens and Nines. The Right Bower is the highest card that can be played and will take ANY trick. The Right Bower is the Jack of the trump suit. The Left Bower is the second highest card that can be played and is the Jack of the other suit of the same color as trump. Example: If Hearts is Trump, Jack of Hearts is the Right Bower(highest card), Jack of Diamonds(second highest) It is important to note that both bowers are considered as part of the trump suit, which is important as in Euchre you have to follow suit at all times.

2. Order Up -> In Euchre, the opportunity to determine the trump suit rotates from each player after the dealer. Ordering up a card gives the dealer the turned up card and is a declaration by that player that they think their team can win 3 out of the 5 tricks, with that turned up card's suit as trump.

Beyond that... there isn't much else except knowing that the cards rank in order:
Right Bower, Left Bower, Ace of Trumps, King of Trumps, Queen of Trumps, Ten of Trumps, Nine of Trumps, Ace, King, Queen, Ten, Nine(all in the other suits)

Exactly it is. I've tried to learn the Standard American Bidding System for a long while. Bid Whist is interesting as you can declare for high cards to be good or low cards to be good. If you're curious about the rules, check out: http://whistportal.com/rules_bid.html

Fair enough question. You don't actually need to declare your partner for the tournament until you are in the room Next Wednesday as you will actually do it in the room through the playok system. I sort of viewed this Wednesday as an opportunity to get to know the others who will likely be participating and to also learn the game. We have traditionally rotated through partners in the past, but again, that's up to the players that show. You can ultimately change/decide on your partners up until that time.

In case you are wondering, I cannot declare the tournament on the playok system more than a week in advance. I will post the details of how you can access that room as soon as I create the tournament. I promise you, the process to get in will be just as simple as getting on this week.

Lastly, I should mention as well. This Wednesday the time frame is NOT that important. If you can't show up exactly at 8:30 PM EST, don't fret. Just show up when you can as it's more than likely there will be people in the server for at least a couple of hours. However, for the tournament you will need to be punctual as the server won't wait for anyone.

I hope that answers your question.

This sounds like a lot of fun but i'm not sure if i'll be open wednesday. Do we have to declare our intent to join beforehand or can we just show up and be admitted depending on open space?

I come from a big family and we all play double deck bid euchre, which is also called Hasenpfeffer. It's tons of fun and once you learn it normal euchre just pales in comparison. I've also played hearts, but would love to learn bridge and pinochle. I'll be sure to try and stay updated on your games.

As I said, this week's edition of the gaming night is intended to be a night where you can learn how to play the game/meet other players who will likely be playing next week. In terms of the day of the tournament, you are more than welcome to just show up before hand and wait for a partner that day or find one prior through TL or through any other source that you like. I've actually tried playing Hasenpfeffer before, but my family has always been a bunch of purists when it comes to Euchre. Although admittedly we have played the British Version where you add in the Joker as the Ultimate Bower(it adds another level to the game).

Really, you don't have to declare your intent at all yet. I'm just sort of gauging the numbers. I don't think there is a limit in terms of the number of teams that Playok can support. Besides, I don't think we'll even come close to hitting one if they have.

If you want to learn to play Bridge, I highly recommend begin by learning Whist. Check out the Whist Portal site at http://www.whistportal.com, it'll give you some good basics on the actual game play portion of the game of Bridge. There is also a great site that will introduce you to the basics of bridge over at: http://www.rpbridge.net/bbtc.htm. In particular it will also go into some of the basic bidding conventions. Perhaps, we'll consider going that route in the coming weeks.

Finally, if there are any other specific requests for card games that you'd like to see, let me know. I'm more than willing to learn/organize anything that people would be interested in trying.

awesome! out of curiosity, do rules vary or is there a 'set-in-stone' list somewhere? im talking about screw the dealer, farmer's hand, dealer's p ordering up, defense going alone etc. in my experience everyone always plays euchre slightly differently haha. just like keeping score with cards

anyway i'll swing by on wednesday and check it out for sure

Screw the dealer(or to the more politically correct, Stick the Dealer) is an option that we've never used but it is an option that is available on the playok servers. Screw the dealer in case anyone else is wondering is a variant of euchre in which if everyone passes around twice and it gets back to the dealer, the dealer MUST declare trump. In this way you play every single hand regardless. The defense going alone is also in there as well. Farmer's hands are not an option. Farmer's hands refer to someone getting a really crappy hand of 9's and 10's and ultimately exchanging it with the discard pile.

So it's really very standardized Euchre for the most part. The only odd thing to me about the server is that the turn up card always ends up in the hands of the dealer even if someone declares it another trump. At least that's the way I've been viewing what's been going on with it.

But yeah, you're right, everyone plays euchre just a bit different. So we're just going to stick with the standard version according to Hoyle and the standard card game rules sites.

wait, what? if someone calls trump on the second time around, the dealer still gets the card in the center? that's weird as hell since you're forcing the dealer to take a crappy non-trump card haha.

i'll just register on playok and check it out. me & my p usually play on yahoo euchre, except the rules there permit the dealer's p to order up without having to go alone. kinda weird but we're used to it now. lets a more aggressive game happen that's for sure

It's a bit odd sure, but the only thing is that the dealer just has to discard that card. Playok allows the same thing as Yahoo!, the dealer's p can order it up and then the server allows each person in turn to choose whether or not they want to go alone in a specific hand. I've never played it where if the dealer's partner ordered it, that they would have to go alone. That also would REALLY change strategy.

I used to play on Yahoo! all the time as well but I just had too many issues with freeze ups and other odd server behavior. Playok has been very reliable for us at least and much faster.

I used to play on Yahoo! all the time as well but I just had too many issues with freeze ups and other odd server behavior. Playok has been very reliable for us at least and much faster.

ah, having the dealer's p go alone when calling was pretty standard here. i just wiki'd it and it's a variation called Canadian. go figure
# Canadian: When a player orders his partner to "pick it up", he must attempt the hand as a loner.

That's an interesting variant but it seems to me that would cause for games to either become more passive or to have more "euchre's" in each game.

Of course, I also love to bring up the infamous: Ten Commandments of Euchre as well.
http://euchrestrategy.homestead.com/comrevisited.html for all of those out there needing some general strategy guidelines.

I just would like to remind everyone that the first part of the Euchre Tournament/Euchre Card Game Night is this evening starting at 8:30 PM EST. I have updated the first post with links and information about how to get into the Euchre portion of Playok. I look forward to seeing everyone there tonight. I will also post that information again right here:

Full details about the competition are available at: http://www.swoopzone.net/bf/euchretourney.html

Again, if you have any questions, please let me know. It should be a fun evening!

I just wanted to say that last night was a ton of fun. A huge thanks to all who showed up from Teamliquid. I'm hoping to see an even bigger turnout for the Euchre Tournament next Wednesday.

Results from the practice matches:

SpaceDominator/Ab62 10 - Izzy/TLEuchrenoob 1
SpaceDominator/Ab62 10 - Pawsome/TLEuchrenoob 5
Pawsom/TLEuchrenoob 10 - Izzy/Viperjo 5
SpaceDominator/Bred 11 - Kacaier/Sinoya 4
SpaceDominator/Izzy 10 - Bred/Sinoya 7
Lenneth/Daiki 10 - Darth Maul/Kacaier 8
Spiffbane/Sinoya 12 - SpaceDominator/Izzy 1
Lenneth123/Daki 10 - Darth Maul/Strawberrie 6

The tournament page is at: http://www.playok.com/en/tour.phtml?tid=3092203. Note that the time looks a bit unusual as it says that it is on March 19th @ 2:15 AM. The server time for playok is 5 hours ahead of EST.

I'll probably throw up a new thread about the Euchre Tournament early next week.

Thanks again!

I'm sad that I missed this, I have a friend that has always raved about euchre and she recently taught me how to play. I'll make an effort to make next week's tournament.
Their are four errors in this sentance.

As I said earlier, every Wednesday Night I will be hosting some sort of card game night, so missing one or two weeks isn't going to be too big of a deal. The only thing though is that if there is a specific card game you wanted to play, I will quite often change them from week to week.

Just to give a heads up, I think the next game we will shift to is Bridge. I read a lot of interest here of people wanting to do it and I found a good series of guidelines to help people prepare for the bidding part of the game of Bridge. Check that out at: http://home.comcast.net/~kwbridge/basics.htm

Of course, I will also be relying a bit on those who have a bit more expertise in the art of the bidding. Pinochle is a lot harder of a game for me to explain to me personally as I haven't praci

I'm going to throw up a new thread about the Euchre Tournament on Monday. If you are interested in me providing you a reminder of the event over AIM, MSN, or ICQ let me know through private message and if you're on around the time, I'll give you a friendly shoutout.

Finally, any other card games you're interested in learning or practicing? I know I received an offer of learning Skat but I'm willing to adjust based on any interest. If you want to see the list of games we've already done over at BF check out the thread at: http://blizzforums.com/showthread.php?t=23703. Cucumber is a surprisingly fun one if you've never tried it. Oh Hell! is a great game as well where you're trying to accurately predict the number of tricks you're going to take. 3-5-8 was an interesting one. Barbu is like Hearts on Steroids.

So yeah, I'm done rambling for now.
