For people outside our community they just think its a harmless genre word but it was proliferated by a guy who is scummy as shit and very possibly a pedophile. He didn't pay out money to players and set up dxd scams. He has a username at TL and he tried making some projects that are, surprise surprise, completely abandoned. This dude appears and disappears like herpes. He is bad news and if people use the term moba they are saying that its ok for some guy like this to put a label on a pretty popular and competitive type of game with high e sport potential [ is it even potential anymore? ] This would be akin to someone making a shitty rts that steals from starcraft and then when a bunch of other people copy him he decides to name the genre ' asdf '. The difference is there wasn't a unified genre term because it wasn't necessary. However it is exactly because of this that we shouldn't use moba and use something more like TRPS or just ' dota '.

It's just DOTA with new graphics, that's not particularly exciting at all, and I don't even like a lot of the artwork. I like the models/portraits and the way the map looks when things are still, but I don't like the fight animations or the spell animations. They seem very clunky to me. The interface at bottom with items/skills seems enormous and Valve has some preoccupation with squares and right angles because everything is a square or rectangle. To be perfectly honest I think HON looks better in every single aspect save the actual map itself and the hero models/portraits. Also it's kind of embarrassing that the stream has gone down twice and the teams are complaining about lag in the first ever public exposure of DOTA 2. I'm going to sleep now, this has been a very underwhelming and rather disappointing experience and it's not really worth staying up to see normal DOTA games play out with better graphics (not that there was any reason to expect anything otherwise).

All that being said, I haven't played it yet so I can't judge the gameplay and the overall feel of the game so I can't really dismiss dota2 just yet but the aesthetics are not appealing to me atm.

Honestly, I wasn't very pumped for DotA 2, in hopes that I would not have great expectations for it and then be surprised by the final product... but so far, even with low expectations, DotA2 failed to deliver. I'd have to admit, when they were picking it looked amazing. Clean presentation, amazing portraits, interesting designs yet faithful to their essence from DotA1. However, as soon as the game started and I got to see laning/creeps/ganks, it just.... looked like LoL or maybe worse. At least LoL goes for the cartoon art style, DotA2 seems to go for a "realistic" LoL style but way worse graphics than HoN. Observer stats and such are obviously not as comfortable as HoN, but even HoN didn't get it right the first time, so those things aren't worth discussing. However, one thing I do think is a definite strength for HoN (except for their servers' downtime) is connectivity. When I lived in the US, I never lagged considerably. It was always playable. I played some in Korea, and while it may have been a problem with my ISP, half of my games were playable with minimum lag (other half were bad/unplayable... but still, Korea -> USE). DotA2 failed in probably the biggest and most important aspect of an online game, or any game for that matter.... playability

just cause everybodys not a mutant with giant fryingpans like in HoN doesnt mean its LoL im actually annoyed that a lot of the spell effects look like too much like HoN, spectre and clockwerk make the teamfights hard to watch, the only spell animations that look right to me are AA's
