There are two types of containers basically.
Pots/Barrels for food and liquids (some pots aren't watertight and only work with food) Bins are for most general goods like finished goods.
You can make bins from metal or wood, but not stone. FML. I misread the wiki as pots being the equivalent of bins ;; "Pots, the stoneware equivalent of barrels, can also be used to store alcohol and other related liquids."
No worries, if you made a ton of pots don't fret about it. You'll use them sooner or later (or you can trade them away).

You can make bins from metal or wood, but not stone. Actually, there's three types of containers - bins, barrels/pots and bags.
In general, you can say that Bins contain objects (crafts, weapons, gems, socks) Bags contain seeds and powders (gypsum plaster, plump helmet seeds, rock nut paste) Barrels/pots contain liquids and bags (alcohol, blood, golden salve, bag of plump helmet seeds)
Efficient storaging is pretty much about making sure you have the right ammount of bins, bags and barrels/pots, as well as location.

is there any easy way to prevent crushing your own guys when you release a drawbridge?
Mine is set up like this...:
DD DD DD
...and turns into this if pulled up:
XD SD XD
S represents my Surgeon who tried to get in while it was closed off. The result when I wanted to let him back in was a very small Surgeon. It might help with his job, not sure yet.
No, srsly, any way to prevent this in the future? =D

Well, you can temporarily assign everyone to burrows inside your fort when you want to use the drawbridge, refusing them a chance to walk to the bridge at all. Generally though, if there's not too much activity across it, expect it to trigger 5-10 seconds after you've ordered the lever pulled, as long as you have idling people, and just wait for the area to be clear before ordering them to pull.

Build the drawbridge over a channel rather than flat ground.
So go from
.. .. ..
to
_. _. _.
(or use ramps instead of channels then remove the ramps)
to

Always dig a deathpit under your drawbridges! 4-5 Z levels down with spikes at the bottom! Anything else is simply not Dwarfy!
Moats are also acceptable, but try to put dangerous shit in them.
|
Yay. The channel under the drawbridge worked perfectly, also burrows are awesum. <3
Erhm. I just ran into another weird problem though... My... farms... stopped being used. o_O
Like out of nowhere. I have seeds. I even deactivated all other labours on some dwarfs with only "Farming (Fields)" activated. Did this happen because I smoothed the tiles around the fields?
I literally have no idea at all. Anything I should doublecheck?
Edit: 8 Trolls and 30 giant Toads for my 2nd siege. Wat. I'm scurred. =S
Edit 2: How can I protect all my sweet animals from my outside pasture during a siege? Does an underground pasture work without them loldieing on me?
Edit 3: Two of my Marksdorfs died having FUN because they only had their fists, no crossbows. Whoops. Sry guys. <3 ... How and where can I change that stuff for the future?
|
Supposedly, a new release is just around the corner. So excited!

Farming (fields) is only related to picking grown plants. Grower is the skill / job needed to actually plant seeds in the ground.

Unless you make a walled and roofed pasture outside, you can't really protect animals that graze there. You can pasture them inside if you've discovered at least the first cave, as soil starts growing moss and other subterrain plants once you do.

Untill you have crossbows and appropriate ammount of bolts for your archers, simply give them some other gear.

Yay, thanks for your help. <3
I found the solution to my "farmers don't plant seeds anymore though", was a different issue -_-
I used mudstone which I soiled to build my farms on, apparently if some dwarfs get lazy they clean up the mud - making the entire farm unusable. Removing the farm + rebuilding it on the parts that are still "mudded" made it work again. fml.

See this thread pop up - start playing DF again.
There goes all my free time

Umm... I have Rock Nuts and want to make them into paste -> oil.
However, when I 'q' my quern the "Mill seeds/nuts to paste" is in red and I cant select anything. What am I missing this time? >_<

next release is so close I'm gonna scream
http://bay12games.com/dwarves/
All the stuff they added to Adventure mode sounds too awesome. I might not get around to building a fortress for weeks..
|
I have never tried adventure mode before. Is it any good?
|
So... I just dug down to the HFS for the first time and I have to say, I am disappoint.
+ Show Spoiler + When you mine into their caverns from one of the "correct" Adamantium Veins, is it possible that you can see where they are (equals avoiding "their" vein in the future) and that you can just seal the entrance with a wall and be completely fine? I expected worse after all the stories I read from you guys. =P
|
+ Show Spoiler +Not quite sure what you mean. Any demons spawning with building_destroyer or whatever it's called will crush walls. I think you can set up a cave-in to seal off whatever tunnel leads there, but personally I've never succeeded in successfully quarantining their evil lair. They will kill every living thing on the map, and burn the entire forest down when they finally make it to the surface o.o
|
Dwarf senses only reach one block. So if you mine out one block, if it is adamantium or not, you can not know what is behind it.
For magma and water lakes behind walls, the stone in front becomes hot or wet. So if you reach it you get a notification instead of your dwarfs mining it away blindly. But for anything other than water or magma, the surrounding blocks are not changed. So as for your spoiler concretely if you haven't figured out the answer yet: + Show Spoiler +For demon caves behind adamantium walls, the adamantium block does not get hot or wet or anything else as far as i know. So no, you can not know if there's a demon hole behind it, you'll only see it once it's too late. FUN!

+ Show Spoiler +I dug down into their caverns through an Adamantine Vein. I got both the messages with the whole "eerie caverns" and "Horrifying screams come from the darkness below!". Then nothing happened. So I looked down in the pit and basicly like 30ish demons were flying around about 30 tiles south of the place where I dug into their caverns. None of them moved towards the surface through my entrance or anything. They just kept doing their thing. =S ...
I didn't play further than like 2 months after that and planned to just use the old savegame from before entering their lair, but I'll just use the current one and find out if they stay down now. =P
Edit: Hold on, I'll just ss it.
+ Show Spoiler +LOL THEY DISAPPEARED. Like 1 month earlier I still saw their icons down there. Now it looks like this: ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Sih2I.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/H7LEr.jpg)
If someone wants the save, gimme a shout and I'll upload it somewhere. I got one from before even opening the caverns and one like 2 months after opening them atm. =P

I'm about to start this game for the first time ever, although I've read stories about this. Anyone have any recommendation as to which graphic tileset to use? I can't really stand the ASCII version..

Use those in the lazynewbpack, they are awesome. Soundsense + graphic tileset + some small tweaks from it help a LOT.
I started with Maydays, liked it and just switched to Ironhand 'cause it looks so much more realistic and less neon-y. Phoebus might be better for someone starting new since it shows like the values of certain ores and gems and stuff directly but to me it just looks artificial.
I started out with those two guides like a week ago and, while following them rather closely, did not feel any kind of "OMG THIS GAME IS SO HARD WOW". I'd assume most people who give those statements don't read up on stuff right when they star. =P

PS: I got slaughtered like 5x in a row now in adventure mode. Now THAT shit is hard. =D

On another thing, how do you guys usually organize your storage/workshops?
In my first two tries I basicly reserved one z layer for everything stone, wood, etc related with the storage right there as well.
I think I'll try to fit all workshops in one layer next and have all the storage above+below, accessible via stairs. :>
