RIP Edit: I'm not really sure what people were expecting. Like it was mentioned before there seemed no clear artistic vision for this. The gameplay and factions looked like they were pretty much just SC2 clone and I think that for many people (myself included) it was a deal-breaker. I mean, why buy SC2 clone when you can just get SC2? The guys behind Stormgate might be great developers but they're clearly not great creatives/designers able to create a compelling new IP from scratch.

If there's any hope for StormGate, it's under new leadership.

I think I would enjoy it enough for the free tier at least. If there's any hope for StormGate, it's under new leadership. Tim backstabbing Tim made me laugh. It's Tim eating Tim world! Edit: Voted for option 3: "I guess you weren't ready for the next gen RTS". I'd vote for "Silently", but Tim's ego is too big for not sharing his important opinion.

First looks of the game told all it needed to know this was never going anywhere. I remember watching Grubby seeing the teaser trailer for the first time. Some kind of archaeologist lady exploring some ruins clicks a thing on a thing and a magical shield appears! (Narrator: The shield was never seen or heard from again). I remember him being so disappointed with the generic demon reveal. Big demon go RAWR. Magical shield stop demon bite. Lady shoots back, but gun not strong enough! But THEN! She is SAVED! By.... ... drumroll .... ![]() Uh, this thing. What's it called again? The most iconic unit in Stormgate. The one they made giant plastic figures of as Kickstarter rewards. This thing that has antenna for some reason and looks kind of like a cute bug, only with weird arms, two spindly legs, and carrying a gun that looks like... well... I think a lot of people gave up at that point.

Things on the back are very similar to gravi-chutes from WH40k https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/warhammer40k/images/1/13/BloodAngelsJumpPackInterceptorCaptainMini.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/1000?cb=20230901180637 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/warhammer40k/images/3/38/VanguardSuppressorsMinis.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190307031326 Not sure if it's supposed to land from orbit. But, yeah, its feet are too small to support weight like this. The center of mass is off. It has hands and it holds a gun for some reason instead of the gun being mounted on a shoulder, for example, etc. It looks stupid to a person who likes machinery like me.

Debating the appropriate level of snark IS the primary Stormgate discussion du jour. Tim stole money from me and then went radio silent for 23 days (and counting). I'll continue to shit on Stormgate openly until the situation resolves one way or another because in 30 years of gaming I've never witnessed something this much of a tragic comedy. I'm happy to discuss the game if Frost Giant wants to offer even a CRUMB.

It’s a 40 million budget and it’s just not that good. Its numbers have fucking sucked at basically every juncture. What’s to discuss? It’s done. It’s a shame but it is what it is. Like just get over it. An absolute bare bones DoW remaster outsold it, considerably. Stormgate is dead. It’s DoA, it’s done.

SC2 was developed by one of the biggest game studios in the world. It was in full production for at least 5 years and then received post-launch support for another 10 years. 40m is very little money when you are expected to match that. Eh, they set that expectation up for themselves and feeded it for a long time. It's not like they had to do that. But they did and it was one of their major self-imposed selling points. I'm generally sypathetic towards "you cannot meet the hype" angle for games because hype trains can get out of control very quickly. In this case however, they have no one to blame but themselves for those expectations.

It is developer's job to hype up their game and it is natural for players to get caught up in the hype. The fact remains that 40m is not the massive budget it is made out to be given the ambitions for SG. Whether any game should have such ambitions is another debate. In hindsight, they obviously bit more than they can chew but I am glad they gave it a go anway. I doubt any developer will try it again. Player expectations were to receive a fun game with a strong vision. That's always what it is. Frost Giant didn't deliver. Not because they bit off more than they can chew, but because they don't have the skills required. End of story, man. Multiple cracks at campaign, 1v1, other modes, only to under-deliver time and time again, and arguably make things worse, has literally nothing to do with biting off more than they can chew. Whether the problem is listening to certain community members, dumbasses on reddit, or their own creative incompetence does not matter. The buck stops with the Tims and the Tims shat the sheets. You could pay the right people 40 million and get a spectacular fucking RTS at the end of 5 years. Spartak your rhetoric is so god awful, man. Like it physically hurts to read the shit you write.

You don't get "fun" out of thin air. You get it through iteration and you get more iteration if you have more time. Their revamped campaign is much more fun than their early access launch campaign. How is that possible if they were fundamentally incapable of producing a fun game due to lack of skills and/or vision? If they limited the scope, they would have more time to iterate on things and add stuff that would have resulted in a more fun game. Would it have been enough? Probably not. If the bar for them to hit is SC2 as it exists today, it is simply not possible for a game to do that at launch and I am not expecting an SC2-like to ever be a big success for that reason.

Not to mention the rven more unfinished modes. They didn't have "multiple cracks" at any of the modes, they barely had one crack. You don't get "fun" out of thin air. I thought you were all about blizzard RTS. The scouring IS the successful blizzard RTS, getting decent numbers and lots of mods and maps. (It's a custom engine as well) Let's not talk like enough/not enough as if SC2 has anything to do with it. Stormgate just failed to be intriguing to capture general players (even as a f2p) and failed to retain most of it. Campaign is 1.0, and to no one's surprise, it still just isnt great. The Scouring getting fewer than 200 concurrent players = flirting I wish all the best to Scouring. I already bought the game and the developer support pack even though I won't be playing it at this state. Of course, as a game that is made by a very small team, it can be considered a success and they did well for themselves but it is only a success in relative terms. It still has a tiny playerbase and it doesn't even have enough players to have a functioning ladder. Hopefully, it grows a ton by 1.0 release and that changes. I think for a game that is targeting the Blizzard RTS playerbase, you can either get good reception (ZeroSpace, Battle Aces, maybe Scouring) or huge interest (Stormgate) but not both. Let's see if that holds true.

The scouring has higher 24hr peak than stormgate now, no reason why it can't have functioning ladder? much better player retention, and sustainable development, lots of mods and maps. that's doing pretty decently I would say, no "40m" is low number etc silliness

Regarding The Scouring, what I like to see is when a team is RESPONSIVE. The Scouring has published micropatches every other day since releasing and is communicating well. I trust their vision for the game and I trust their roadmap because I see that they have drive and passion. The same has never been true for SG... and that's a game that _had_ a dedicated community manager. How bizarre. Long weekend in North America upcoming. If there's no statements made from FG today then... wow, a full month of radio silence since their triumphant launch. If Tim and friends wanted to reduce scope and try to manage a 4 person team, they maybe could have done that with their 1k concurrent players they had, but you bleed retention very quickly when you _look like_ you've abandoned the project.
