Recently, I attempted to find updated info on StormGate through Reddit. I wasn't looking for anything complex, just trying to catch up. But after about 15 minutes, I had to leave. It seems there isn't much depth to the discussions there. The voting system favors the first flashy response and leaves it at that. Even scrolling down didn't improve things.
In my view, Reddit is great for posting straightforward content and getting immediate responses. But when it comes to discussing the subtleties of a complex game, it's not quite the right fit.

Right now I think making a separate section MIGHT be putting the cart ahead of the horse, given the level of activity in this current megathread. Ideally, we'd have a situation like the Dota or LoL megathreads of the past, where there's so much obvious interest that it becomes necessary to make a new forum (or even a new site).
Granted, there's a possibility that creating a new forum would help kickstart the discourse.
For now, I'll think we'll be monitoring interest on TL, especially as it may ramp up with the upcoming closed beta.

Yeah, I mean this all makes sense but I do worry that since the discussion is so focused on reddit right now, as the devs have directed conversation there, that not much traffic will pass through TL organically unless an initiative is started. Surely talks will increase with closed beta, and as content releases, but If it's an explosion of interest you're waiting for I'm not sure we're going to get that. At any point.

I am looking at the Stormgate subreddit and I am wondering which of those discussions you wish were taking place on TL right now? It's almost nothing but speculation, feature wish lists, and jokey posts pretending the game is already out. I just looked through the top rated posts from the week, and there's no real discussion taking place for the same reason there's none here on TL: No one knows anything.
The fact that the conversation in this thread for the last week has entirely been about the question of whether we should have a dedicated Stormgate forum kind of speaks for itself; if there were a real discussion to be had about the game, we'd be having that discussion instead of this one. As much as I'd love to read and engage in a lot of discussion here about this new game, there's just nothing to talk about. I hope that changes over the summer as details about the closed testing period start inevitably leaking out, but until then I don't really know what people are hoping for.
And as much as I love TL and hate Reddit, I think it's pretty unrealistic to imagine a new game would use TL as a community hub. I love it here, but TL is tiny compared to Reddit; the devs obviously have to go where there are eyeballs to be reached if they want to have a chance of building a solid community around their game. What I would hope for is to start seeing Stormgame staff start engaging here in addition to Reddit, given the population of TL obviously skews pretty heavily toward hardcore RTS fans.

Developers occasionally post discussion topics on reddit and then chime in themselves with a response to the community discussion after some time. Here is a list:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormgate/wiki/discussion_topics/
Reddit's upvoting/downvoting system has both its upsides and downsides. The big downside as mentioned here is how it favors comments that are made shortly after the thread was created but Frost Giant developers read all the comments in those threads, so it is not really an obstacle for feedback to get heard in this case.

Welp there's a huge coordinated tweet campaign promoting steam wishlisting right now

Apparently a content release is coming soon (which makes sense since they are going to begin their public testing phase) hopefully it's cool stuff! I mostly expect it to be about game mechanics or maybe a race overview for the resistance, given the fact the other races will not be playable in early testing.

As the other guy said, you have to look for the official discussion topics. Between those are long stretches of nothing of worth really.
As for FGS "choice" between TL and Reddit (I doubt they ever really considered TL), I'm really talking about the phase they're in now and the phase that they're coming up on. When SC2 was in beta, there was SO much high quality discussion on TL about multiple building select, unlimited unit selection, etc etc. Stormgate is going to have its own versions of those things (new RTS mechanics and rules) that will warrant a lot of discussion. At that point, Reddit really falls behind and fails as a medium. Official forums also fail relative to TL because TL has the moderation and community already established (though it's very different from 13+ years ago, I still think it's good and quality people will show up and contribute if good discussion is fostered).
It's inevitable that the game will have a subreddit and redditors will use it and it'll play a part in promoting the game to redditors. FGS doesn't have to use the subreddit at all in order for that to happen.
In any case, once they start bringing in outsiders to test (starting very soon), I imagine they'll shift in how they're interacting with outsiders.
My main point is just that if this game is looking good and developing into the next big thing, then I'd like TL to do its best to revive the kind of environment we had here in the early days of SC2.

As for all the latest buzz, fucking announcements of announcements. Disgusting lmao

The worst part is, it's not even an announcement of an announcement with a date. It would be better if they just said "On June 3rd we will have X and Y to show you!" Instead it's still just "soon" and everything seems to be ambiguous

I definitely agree that once the game is a real thing and there is a substantive discussion to be had, I'd like to see TL create a space for it. There's a reason I've stuck around this place all these years, and this is definitely where I will want to come to discuss Stormgate. When SG gets to the point that SC2 was during the era you're talking about, I absolutely would hope to see a sidebar set aside for it. I just agree with Wax that it would be putting the cart before the horse to do that at a point when there's nothing to discuss.

What kind of competitive/eSport features are you guys hoping will be included in a successor to SC2 (automated tournaments, clan wars, lan, improved casting features etc.)?

NA should have a 25k tournament, and so should EU for example. Also casters should be unbiased when commentating and consider all play the top level instead of just memeing on NA

SC2 in its current/end state pretty much has most one would want. LAN would be nice, but it’s less critical than ever.
In an unrelated note, keeping casuals engaged, having modes to play that aren’t competitive go a long way. Keep a vibrant ecosystem going.
Clans were excellent in how they worked in WC3, it’s a completely different landscape and many just use third party tools like Discord, but WC3 felt a much more social experience, somewhere I’d pop in and play, but also just hang out. Maybe even include rankings for clans, based on member ranks and whatnot, where clan wars would also count. Automated tournaments are fun, they just feel different than queuing another ladder game, and if you’ve got friends in the same bracket it’s great hyping up a potential showdown, cheering on a buddy or alternatively bantering when they get knocked out
I’d like to see in-client broadcasting, as other games have done. There are so many SC2 moments I’d have loved to have been following a particular player’s camera, watch someone at the peak of their craft under pressure. I had brief moments during I think some MLG and Afreeca offered it for GSL for a while. Or I could do my own observing which would be nice, look into the kind of things I want to look at
The number one addition I want to see, that’s not been done properly before that I’ve seen are guides and tutorials for actual competitive play, embedded in the game and kept somewhat up to date. I’m sure if the game hits the spot community can help out.
I don’t think I could learn SC2, much less BW and WC3 coming in now blind without putting a fair bit of work in, hunting down various sources. Which I’m only likely going to do if I’m already pretty hooked on RTS to begin with.
Whereas some content in game explaining basic hotkeys, micro techniques, other concepts and some standard solid builds, and you can do a few challenges in the client and get ready for the competitive game faster.

I personally think lan is very important. We accept a mostly online platform for sc2 because we understand the game is in a state of decline and tournament organizers are doing what they can, but nothing beats the good old offline days. Proleague, kespa, mlg, seeing the players giving on stage interviews, crowd reactions. IdrA slamming his keyboard and losing his f4 key. people flying in from around the world. It makes everything feel more "alive"
