I must agree that warcraft 3 is closer to rpg than other rts like broodwar for example because of the small number of units, heroes and their levels, however it is definitly not an rpg.

Doesn't anyone here play rogue-like games? Or ANY classic rpg games? Fallout and Baldur's Gate 2 were awesome, but even the oldies are better than any of the newer rpgs like diablo2. What's so fun about diablo2? The first diablo was cooler because of random dungeon and quest generation, so every time you start over it's a whole new game. You don't get that out of oblivion or neverwinter nights. Still, even the first Diablo is nowhere near one of my favorites because there are so many better games out there. Yeah, graphics are way better now, but what about gameplay? My top 5: 1.) Ultima VII - A big, detailed world where fun, creative quests are around every corner, and you're never forced to play through a linear storyline. This is the king of RPG games where you are free to do so many things, from dungeon crawling, to sailing to mysterious islands; from fishing, to blacksmithing. It's very freeform gameplay. If you have the original game data (expansion optional) a team wrote a free engine that works on newer systems. http://exult.sourceforge.net/ Oh, and by the way, Ultima IV and VI were also great games, but they're older style where you have to type out many of the commands (even for little things like 'open door'). I don't think many people here would like that. 2.) Fallout // Fallout 2 - What an immersive game! A post-apocalyptic setting, not where you play a hero or some other kind of terribly skilled and powerful person, but someone that just wants to survive. Explore a world full of mutants, thieves, and others trying to take advantage of you, with dungeons riddles with both bad guys and animals affected by the nuclear fallout of the last war. The rpg system behind fallout is cool, you have your stats, of course, and also special abilities, iirc each comes with some downside as well. You run around the world in real time, but when you enter combat it turns into a turn-based game, which may sound boring but is pretty cool and fits well with the overall game. It requires patience yes, and if you are patient it'll be rewarding, take your time, with one skill you can actually aim for specific body parts no matter what npc you're up against, aim for the nuts or the head, both would cause different damage points, and both have different chances of landing. Lots of other skills add to the game in several ways, it's not just bonuses to attacks and resistances -- whole new game implementations come with some skills and also stats (with higher charisma, for example, you get more choices in dialogue with npcs). Gameplay reminds me somewhat of Ultima VII because it's pretty freeform and there are lots of fun quests to do. Game info and screenshots: http://www.mobygames.com/game/fallout/ 3.) NetHack and other rogue-like games - The first thing you're going to think to yourself, just like I did, is "this game looks like shit". It's true, they all look like shit! But where these games lack graphics, they make up in gameplay and depth. Think Diablo2, take away the nice graphics, add about a hundred more things you can do, each with its own importance, randomly generated dungeons, randomly generated items, randomly generated random generation, random random random. What's so great about random? You get a whole new game experience every time you start over. That red potion you drank last game that saved your life could poison you next game. Each and every level looks different every time you start over. Most rogue-like games start very simply, you're in a dungeon, there are a bunch of levels, your goal is simply to get down to the lowest level, beat the boss, and win. Sounds easy but many people have never beaten the game even once. It's a hard rpg genre where emphasis is on survival by any means (oh, and there are many means) and the goal is always completion. Gaining levels and looking for phat lewts isn't going to save your ass. There's a good reason why these games are still so popular, despite the crappy ascii graphics, you just need to give them a fair chance, like I did. Game info and downloads: http://www.nethack.org/ http://www.thangorodrim.net/ (Zangband, linked in thangorodrim, is another popular rogue-like, but following the silmarillion story of Angband by J.R.R. Tolkien, so you might feel more comfortable playing that as an RPG) http://doom.chaosforge.org/ <--a DOOM rogue-like! Don't like fantasy? Replace the swords and magic with shotguns. 4.) The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall - This, in my opinion, is the king of first-person rpgs. Again, it's old and the graphics aren't spectacular, though it was good looking for its time. The game world. I don't think any RPG is capable of reproducing the size of this fucker. Literally the size of Great Britain, though you'd be crazy to actually walk from place to place. Everything except the items available, cities and special landmarks is randomly generated. Again with the random generation -- yes, I love it. What does this mean in Daggerfall that makes it special? The DUNGEONS are randomly generated, too! Since they're 3d, it's pretty incredible and no other game has yet to make randomly generated 3d dungeons. That's right. Make your character, there are so many variations, each time you start over it's a whole new game. I personally liked playing a sword mage - they're very powerful and you get both the best weapons and spells to use. Dungeon crawls are so fun, a one man army tearing the place up. The game is so freeform, make your own spells, combining different effects, customize your equipment with enchantments, buy houses and boats, get involved in world politics and change your status, get simple to epic quests (many quests also being randomly generated)... Wikipedia says it best: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_II:_Daggerfall The key feature of Daggerfall as in all The Elder Scrolls games is the freedom the game offers to players. Players are free to play the game in any style, from an honorable knight to an evil assassin. Players are also free to stray from the main quest at anytime and can choose not to do it at all. Daggerfall is the largest Elder Scrolls game to date, featuring a game world estimated as being 161,600 square Kilometres (63,125 square miles) — roughly twice the size of Great Britain — with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore. Yeah. Cool thing is there's a Windows XP patch now, so you can enjoy it even now, but it can still be buggy. 5.) Might and Magic VI - A beautifully designed game with a feeling like Daggerfall, except the world is static, no random content, but it makes up for it with its challenging game world (both on your wits and your patience). In this game you have a party, no one man army, npc interaction takes a bigger role, combat is more tactical and fast-paced than Daggerfall. It's a tough rpg with hundreds of hours of gameplay. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Might_and_Magic_VI:_The_Mandate_of_Heaven I'm not mentioning Planescape: Torment because I think of it more of an interactive story than an RPG game. It's a great story and cool npc interaction, but I can't say it's one of my top 5 games. Baldur's Gate 2 is trully a masterpiece. I recommend it because the first time you play through it - wow - it's an epic quest with fun gameplay (D&D 2.0 rules) and many, many hours of sitting at your chair, looking at the screen, stuck in that fun little world. It's beautifully designed, but... it's too linear, you will never get the same immersive experience again. I wish Black Isle still made games ![]() edit: Oh I hear Gothic 2 was a great rpg game. Might want to check that out. WarCraft 3 is not an RPG... I played through the single player and yeah it feels like one but still, it's a mix with RTS, so you can't really call it an RPG. Another example - the heroes of might and magic series of games, they're rpg/turn-based strategy, but would you call them rpg games? No.
