Sr18 Netherlands1141 Posts June 16 2007 20:34 GMT #85 For PC; Might & Magic 4/5, 6 and 7 Baldurs Gate series Neverwinter Nights 2 (and maybe the second expansion of 1) For consoles: Chrono Trigger (SNES) Final Fantasy 5 and 6 (SNES), 7/8/9 (PSX) and maybe 12 (PS2) Star Ocean 2 (PSX) and Star Ocean 3 (PS2). Not that these games are good for entirely different reasons. The Might and Magic series for instance sported a very bland and uninteresting story but had a large gameworld with freeform gaming. The Final Fantasy series sport very little freedom but generally have a well though out story with interesting characters and well written dialogues. The Star Ocean series have by far the best fighting and character developing-system and a great post-game to boot. The bioware games have a very detailed gameworld that will present you with a lot of difficult decision making. As such, it's hard to really determine which game is "the best" as they are essentially games from different categories.

Lufia 2 was also really good, but I dunno about a contendor for the best. Suikoden was also very good, but again I dunno about the best. There's probably a bunch of other SNES games I'm missing too. I think most people here missed out on the truly great RPG games from the SNES era and were spoiled by the PSX with games like FF7 and FF8 and such (mostly because a lot of people here are still pretty young). In my opinion, no game from the PSX or after can hope to qualify for the best RPG of all time. SNES was where it was at.
