In Nethack and most other roguelike games you save if you exit, and you continue when you come back, BUT you can't save during the game, then load it when you die. Most people prefer it that way. Yes it's very hard and very challenging, you only get one life, but I don't think it's such a bad thing since it's no big deal starting over - you learn and still have fun. As for Diablo... well it is hack'n'slash, so is nethack and roguelikes - they're rpg/action games. The thing is in rpg games the line between rpg and action has been blurred from the start. If you want a pure rpg game you'd probably want to play a pencil and paper dungeons and dragons game  The difference in diablo's hack'n'slash style is that it's all in real time, you walk through a dungeon and click your mouse twice, kill something, keep going until you kill more shit, while in rpgs like baldur's gate and nethack it's turn-based. So yeah just depends how you like it, I personally prefer turn-based since those games generally have more depth to them. You can stop and think about what you want to do and it just makes it more fun since the game pretty much makes you think in more difficult settings. While in Diablo and Diablo2 style of gameplay it's more about action and less about tactics, you just slash through shit without thinking, the most you have to remember to do is drink a fucking potion. Not meant to flame Diablo just speaking the truth, I know many would find turn-based gameplay boring. I think that's why some people might not think of diablo as a real rpg, but it is, you're still a hero fighting monsters through dungeons, it's just done differently by blizzard, and that's why it got so popular. | ||

Even if it shares the same universe and engine with Baldur's gate ( ubergreat game ) i think the storyline is very weak and it turns in a diablo like which is very sad because the ADD rules + Baldur's Gate engine arent good for hack'n slash imo. I had huge expectations for this game but i was a bit disapointed ( I finished icewindale but i didnt play to icewind dale 2). For Baldur's gate lovers, there is a mod which allows you to play Baldur's Gate 1 with Baldur's Gate 2 improved engine, higher levels new classes and so on but i dont remember its name T-T. edit: @zeto i understand your point of view | ||

Other than that, I have to say the first Baldurs Gate. The second one is good too but I feel too much like a kid in a candy store when playing it, running around and trying to get all cool items. The first one has a better storyline which gives a better sense of adventure and it feels more serious. | ||

For PC I'd pick Baldur's Gate Shadows of Amn and Plancescape Torment.. the latter havin such a funny/deep storyline that it has even been turned into a book (one commerce and another one fan based.. the fan based is of course better). Planescape unfortunately lacks a bit in gameplay, but if you like lengthy novel-like games, you won't be disappointed. Haven't played Fallout nor 2 which has been named quite a few times already.. maybe I should check up on that one. | ||
