I think it comes from as far back as Jumpman or Mario Bros, in the instruction books to the Atari 2600/Colecovision games but I'm not sure. I think he was described that way in Nintendo power in developer interviews too.
I wish I remembered the sources but I'm fairly confident. Anyone wanna back me up on this?

"One of its first mentions in a game is in Mario's Time Machine, in which upon being asked if he was from Italy (due to his accent) by an imperial ruler in China, Mario says that he is from Brooklyn, New York. Of course, granted the time period, the feudal lord didn't know what Brooklyn was.
According to Mario is Missing! (both the original PC version and console instruction booklets) and the Super Mario 64 Player's Guide, in addition to the DIC cartoon shows and Nintendo Comics System, the Mario Brothers are from Brooklyn." ~ https://www.mariowiki.com/Brooklyn

Preordered the console + Zelda, because I don't even care if it turns out to be a flop.

I think this worldwide release is going to be a colossal fuck up. Nobody online or retail is taking Preorders anymore which is a very bad sign.

Yeah the point of staggered releases is that you have enough supply for all regions.
I hope they know what they're doing.

This release is going to be a disaster unless nintendo amps up production capabilities 10 or 20 fold IMO

I don't see the point of a worldwide release considering some games are going to be released in Japan first.
Mario impressed me even though it's not my type of game. I did more research on what games are coming out. SMT and Xenoblade caught my eye. Looks like this will be a next year buy for me.

The Classic NES was underproduced because they expected 30-40yo people that lost contact with games for a while to get one and play with their kids. They didn't expect a younger demo to be interested in buying them and were going to make more.

The amount of hype that demographic they didn't think would buy it displayed upon official announcement of the NES Classic should have tipped Nintendo off that this was going to destroy their projections.
I honestly have no idea if 2 million is enough of them. Given that most of the game titles I have seen are meh other than Zelda it probably should be ok but then again, I doubt 2 million is a profitable number of switches sold.
A lot of game sites and magazines think this console could be Nintendo's last unless its a big time hit. The Gamecube and both Wii's were very distant thirds to PS and Xbox. If this flops or barely treads water we might see Nintendo become a third party game developer.Nintendo has lost alot of money on those 3 past consoles.

Nintendo doesn't take losses on the direct hardware of the "console", which is why they don't lose money on them. So, even if it's a "bad" period, their consoles are still profitable. Just not the insane revenue of the Wii-era.
But the Switch, the more I think about it, is really the direction Nintendo has been going on their consoles. The Switch 2, in a few years, will make even more sense. It'll be able to do what the current one does for much longer and much more efficiently. The graphic resolution/refresh rate is at a saturation level. The tablet display/color depth on the TV output would increase, but they can hit the levels they need to right now.
Now we just need the game lineup to be good by Christmas.

As far as profitability, Nintendo said they aren't making the mistake of selling them at a loss like they did with the WiiU. I also don't know if the 2 million figure is worldwide(which I highly doubt) or just for NA.
Looking it up, I'm surprised how poorly the Gamecube sold. Granted, it didn't help that the PS2 was the best selling system of all time, but considering how affordable it was it's almost odd that it didn't sell more. Even so, it was only a few million behind XBOX. The Wii actually outsold the PS3 and XB360. So all in all, they haven't done too bad recently - with the obvious exception of the WiiU.

It's true that Nintendo underperformed with their 6th and 8th generation consoles, but the Wii was not a distant 3rd to the PS3/X360. It vastly outperformed both systems (100m+ lifetime sales when neither of its competitors cracked 85m). Coupled with the massive success of the DS line, there's no question that Nintendo dominated the 7th generation market.
Hell, the Wii U isn't even a "distant" 3rd this gen. The XBOne's numbers are shitty too, and the gap between the XBOne and the Wii U in terms of sales is far smaller than the gap between the PS4 and either of them. The two relevant systems this gen are the 3DS and the PS4--and the idea that Microsoft's console division is somehow doing any better than Nintendo doesn't jibe with the facts.
Nintendo did still release a massively successful piece of hardware this generation--it just was't a home console--so the idea that they should drop out of the race and make games only doesn't make sense in light of that. In fact, given how much better they are at designing for the handheld space, making a home console that is also a handheld seems like the most logical thing for them to do.

The cheapest Buy It Now offering on Amazon is sitting at $120, twice the price. Whether or not young people bought a ton of them, which I think is possible for the novelty factor, they were immediately a hot ticket commodity if but for shortage alone.
People born in the 64 era, at least for NA, were born in late 1996. So they'd be around 20-21 at earliest. I was born in 87, but I never had a system until the PSOne. Had I been in the console sphere at an early age, I might have had interest in it.

@ $60USD, it was a really, really good gift idea. I think that was the big issue.

I've just looked at some previews, and I'm getting quite hyped for the console. The main reason is that this might be the first time that I'll actually be able to game during my commute (around 3 hours per day), and just keep playing when I get home. In all the device reminds me a lot of Microsoft's Surface Pro line: use it as a tablet or laptop when you're on the move, dock it when you're at home and just continue doing what you were doing.
The price is quite alright too considering that it's both a classic console and a handheld (tablet) in one. The docking station is included in the base package, and as anyone who's ever bought one for a laptop knows, those things don't come cheap. It's also a nice change from not including even something as basic as a charger in the base package for the 3DS.

idk, the switch will definetely be a success, especially in japan*, pretty sure the switch will fly of the shelves like theres no tomorrow.
Will it be a new Wii or achieve PS4 sales ? who knows, too early to say, but it will definetely going to be an overall success
* = The switch is (in theory) the perfect console for the japanese market.

I'm not really seeing how the switch is an improvement portably over playing on a handheld like the 3ds. My experience with many hybrid devices over the past is that specialization for portability isnt worth doing a couple of other things mediocrely.
I would be disappointed if they phase them out in favor of the switch. Most games I play are just better with a d-pad and analog sticks and circles still suck for anything 2d, which happens to be all of the games I play on the go.
