As the unofficial TL.net "Free Command & Conquer" announcer I can bring you the happy news that EA gives away Red Alert 2 with Yuri's Revenge for free on their Origin game service:
https://www.origin.com/en-de/store/free-games/on-the-house
Unlike previous C&C free releases this one seems to be timed so grab it while it's hot :D
Red Alert 2 started the careers of both Dustin Bowder and Liquid Ret and is one of the best real time strategy games of all time. Many, myself included, see it as the highlight of the entire Command & Conquer series.
There are a couple of custom .dlls which make this game run smoother on modern operating systems - I'll post them later. Until then I recommend 8 player FFAs. They're the most chaotic and hilarious experience you'll ever get in an RTS :D

Thanks for sharing the news Im just waiting for the servers to go back to normal.

Aww, right now it's Sim Hospital that's free (which I might get), but it looks like they'll bring free Red Alert 2 back hopefully soon.

Red Alert 2 is back up boyz

Thanks for sharing the news :D

I just wish Origin wouldn't auto-set the game language based on your IP adress or something. Client in english ? So you'd rather have everything in english, yeah ? NOOOOOOOO. Here is your game in german.
But hey. Its free. So I probably shouldn't complain in this case :D

You can download the official online version from here : http://xwis.net/forums/index.php/topic/177134-downloads/ You just need to Origin serial code to make it work online!
(no advertisement, XWIS is the official "replacement" since the EA servers went down)

Yay! I'm downloading :D

I like the german version though. One of the better localisations esp. compared to other RTS games, but I can't understand the IP lock as well. Unlike Generals, where the original uncut version is banned in germany, there are no "cuts" in RA2.
btw some .dlls which can be placed in the game folder:
http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html Direct Draw Wrapper (ddraw.dll) with lot's of customization options like vsync and setting processor affinity. I have to test the best options later.
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cncstuff/ts_ra2_lanpatch_1_00.zip Converts IPX into UDP so you can easily play RA2 on LAN. I've read that it's not compatible with online multiplayer (other than virtual networks like hamachi) so don't delete the original .dll file (put it into a .zip file or something)

This is not free, you have to sell your soul to EA. I am not going to download and use their service. It is bad enough I had to sell my soul to Valve.

I think Origin is actually a good service compared to other game distribution platforms. Functionally it's on par with Steam plus EA has way better customer support than Valve in my experience. And you could always make a fake account and sell the soul of a fictional person :D.
Although, I can understand people who don't want to install yet another game service to play a game which could be played without it before, esp. when you're used to play games without additional launchers and when there's alternatives like GOG which offer games DRM free.

For me, it's more the fact that EA is behind it. I don't like their business models with DLCs, the way they treat their employees etc. That's why I'm not buying anything from EA. The only game I bought in the last 5 years from them was Mass Effect 3, and only because I really, really wanted to finish the triology.
