The CT that's carrying the hostage hilariously enough has portion of his vision obscured and you suffer from a pretty severe movement penalty. You're than expected to travel all the way back to CT spawn to win the round, so it's next to impossible to actually win the round by objective when you're at a player deficit. Most rounds are won by team elimination. Finally the economy system makes no god damn sense. CT's would usually find themselves money starved because of the severe disadvantage BUT if you actually win a round by rescuing a hostage, you are literally given close to money cap as your reward. It's a hilarious game mode but it needs to go through an extreme overhaul as a whole for you to consider taking it seriously.

Yes, they're generally terrible for competitive play. One big reason is that Defusal maps are designed in such a way that it spreads the defenders out. If all 5 Ts can camp one hallway, the game would just be 15-0 for Ts every half. Even de_Dust, which is a horrible competitive map, has at least 2 main avenues of advancing to bombsites (though underpass is hardly viable).

That just depends on map design, which most hostage maps are terrible at. Sure, if you spawn the hostages in T spawn then it makes it impossible. You just need to design the map so that the Ts actually have to move in order to defend the hostages. The economy system is just broken though so that would need fixing first.

I wouldn't say it's broken, it was just designed around T's being on the offensive and CT's on the defensive. And hostage maps put you in the complete opposite situation.
