Is this a new way of announcements in gaming industry? Its Blizzard. They announced work on WC3 in 1999 and it was released in 2003. Its how they roll. Starcraft was advertised on the back of the WC2 manual (1995) but didn't come out until 1999. They like to give us the long view of things. Warcraft Lord of the Clans was advertised in the Starcraft CD case and we're still waiting :3

Is there a single Blizz game this isn't true of? Not counting expansions?

I dont know when they announced Heroes of the Storm and Sc2 HotS. I only know that they announced D3 RoS at Gamescom (August) 2012 and released at March 2013.

Heroes of the Storm was originally called Blizzard Dota and announced in 2010 shortly after SC2 came out (they did it at Blizzcon of course, while SC2 came out in summer or so).
It got it's named changed twice to Blizzard All-Stars and now Heroes of the Storm, went into alpha 2014 I think? Beta and release were both this year, so it was quite the wait for this one (especially since it was originally announced as a custom map for SC2 - centerpiece of the planned Blizzard Arcade feature).

Don't forget that this was supposedly that new MMO (Titan?) that they were working on and then scrapped. So basically we've been waiting for Overwatch ever since the announcement of that and just didn't know it.

Maybe they imported some of the assets and FPS elements from it, but that's about it. And that's not a lot when you're going from an MMO to an arena-based shooter.

I bet there was some stuff in Titan that made it into Overwatch, like character designs, sound, art assets. But that game was shut down years ago.

Would be so cool, if Overwatch would give them the means to give Nova her own game.

When I saw the Overwatch demo, I assumed I was seeing the salvaged remains of Titan.
Titan was supposed to be an immersive world which Overwatch being a new setting fits. Also rumors had Titan as an mmo-fps sort of like Destiny ended up being and Overwatch being a class based FPS seems a natural stripping down of the mmo elements.

The OverWatch youtube channel has some pretty good gameplay demos of a lot of the characters. No voice over or anything, just like 7-12 minutes of the character doing their thing. There are some cool abilities and neat stuff you can do, even with the bigger, slower characters.

Oh I certainly agree that Overwatch is created from the scraps of Titan.
|
I don't know why everyone is now just realizing that Overwatch was created from Titan.... they specified that when they announced Overwatch lol
