USA 90 - Brazil 86
Brazil didn't even have Nene.
Lebron (3-8 fg, 11 pts) and Wade (1-4, 5 pts) get out played by Barbosa and Garcia.
After two easy wins against Puerto Rico and China, the US was surprisingly forced to play come from behind. Brazil went on a 16-0 run to start the third quarter and turn a 52 – 38 deficit into a 56 - 52 lead. But the Americans rallied and pulled out the game the same way they won their other two through stifling defense.
Brazil’s Leandro Barbosa and Alex Garcia led their team with 14 points apiece, but Barbosa’s evening ended early when fouled out halfway through the third quarter.
But Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao was the emotional glue behind the Brazilian come back, pulling down 16 rebounds until a questionable double dribble call late in the game on Wellington Dos Santos enraged the emotional Varejao and earned him a technical foul which doomed his club.
“The same thing happened to their player and the referee did not call it but he called it on us,” Varejao said. “I tried to tell him it was not a foul, not a double dribble, I didn’t really say anything but he gave me a foul anyway.”
The play in question set up a bizarre sequence in the last two minutes where the US team, trailing by three points, were awarded five technical foul free three throws, with Hinrich making four, in the span of 30 seconds. The Chinese crowd, who cheered loudly during introductions for NBA stars like James and Dwayne Wade, booed vociferously at the referees bizarre calls.

I almost thought US was gonna lose......lol
|
Now I didn't watch the game admittedly, but Wade only played 10 minutes. Hard to put up huge numbers with that =/
|
so brazilians are starting to own on another kind of ball.

Good for them to struggle after two blowouts. Hopefully it'll remind them that they need to take the other countries seriously and keep up their intensity and drive.

The fact that there was a thread about this particular game, I thought USA lost.
I didn't watch it.

It sounds like they deserved to lose from the article. I didn't watch it either.

Oh, a week ago we defeated argentina in SA championship.. o.O
look at this: FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS MEDALS' TABLE 1950-1998
1-USA - GOLD=3 - SILVER=3 - BRONZE=3 2-Soviet Union - GOLD=3 - SILVER=3 - BRONZE=2 3-Yugoslavia - GOLD=3 - SILVER=3 - BRONZE=2 4-Brazil - GOLD=2 - SILVER=2 - BRONZE=2 ... ... ... argentina - GOLD=1 - SILVER=1 - BRONZE=0
enough? if its not, i could mention woman basketball, but that would be a shame for argentina..
PS: be happy with your olympic tittle, but dont say bs plz. thx.
|
LOL brasilians and argentinians. always at eachother's throats.
|
argetnina lately constructed a pretty fucking good team... I don't know if they worked out the young talents of it was pure luck, but all I know is that Brazil can't win a serious game against them in many time now.
The South American final was some bulshit, they almost didn't allow Ginobili to play. And at this game, vs USA, Brazil scored 16-0 at 3rd quarter when wade and james were out. On a serious game the difference would be higher unfortunately. But nice we didn't get crushed tho.

last year shaq > yao
but this year, definitely, definitely yao > shaq
yao was putting up better numbers than any big man after he recovered from his initial foot injury, like 28/12 or something

usa still thinks they have a dream team but only 2 or 3 big names on the roster. i think it would be pretty nice to see if the usa sends the nba champion to such events. cause the nba champion team may also have only 1-2 star players but they are really used to play together and everybody has his role to play!

agreed...

China sucks. And I seriously doubt the accuracy of that medals table. WTF have the players from the soviet union been? Seriously... wtf? And furthermore you cannot even consider FIBA teams 75% of the potency of top level NBA basketball.

cept this years champion really didn't have 1-2 stars because the team shaq is on is always imba'd

You cant send the NBA champions because not all of them are american. If the Spurs were to win how would Manu play for Team USA?

Shaq didn't do shit in the playoffs. He got his ass shut down throughout most of it. Wade carried.

They could have sent the Pistons in '04.

no. there aren't only 2 or 3 big names... let's see carmelo, elton, lebron, dwayne, gilbert... of course there are a lot of big names that aren't playing but thats besides the point.

Wade did, but it's not like Shaq did nothing. He didn't produce numbers against Dallas, but he did in other rounds. Dallas made sure they did not do what Detroit did against him and would always double to triple team him. They ran the majority of their offense through Shaq, and if the people he set up for open shots actually hit most of them he would of led the team in assists. Shaq may have lost his ability to dominate through double/triple teams, but he will still do it 1 on 1, so most teams don't guard him that way. Without the Shaq effect Miami might not have gotten past the Bulls.

You can't send the NBA champions because it'd be a disadvantage for the next season. Other teams would be able to rest and train in the offseason, while the champions would be busy preparing for the world championships. Not to mention that just because a team is built and has trained to win in the NBA, doesn't necessarily it's ideal for competing in the international arena as the game is quite different.

carmelo, elton and gilbert may sound good and everything but they are not big names in the nba. as a big name i consider bryant, mcgrady, iverson, kidd, duncan garnett or francis
