Yes we all would love to be able to explain to our video games in a great narrative way which way we fire our lightning bolt at the baddies, but sadly computers aren't at the AI level yet where it's possible.

But I've become total fan of Chris by watching these videos, holy moly he is good.

Possibly to the rescue, once again. Again being the only party member with any real problem-solving capabilities. They definitely should have just fought the Priest/Wizard/Warrior combination when it was 4v3, and just had JP use his control spells on the wizard/priest instead of using them to make them fall off their horses and flee lololol Then again.. if JP had a plausible alibi/defense besides "Nope! i was clearly in plain sight at a very public place!" when he wasnt lmao.

People are now talking video games in here, which while off topic, I wanted to address...

Literally there is not a single video game made to date, that is as full of choices/options as DnD is, and that is the draw at least to ME personally. I have never played a video game that could even come CLOSE to simulating the amount of decision making, that these people are being subjected to, during every play session. I like RPG's especially open world RPG's as much as anyone, but its just not possible/plausible to make any game as deep decision-wise as something like DnD, that will evolve and bend and change over time, (given you have a good, fun DM like Neal, who is trying hard to make it both challenging, and enjoyable, letting them do funny shit, while keeping it also serious and plausible)

Just want to say its silly to compare any RPG to it, because they are not even comparable experiences at all imo.

and THIS is why i want to actually try DnD. As someone who actually enjoyed creative writing enough to actually study it full time in college, story teling, and creating something believable/enjoyable/immersive is one of the most awsome experiences/most rewarding experiences I, personally, have had. Writing a 30 page, draft, of a part of a story, and getting other people to believe in it, and enjoy it is just the most awsome experience I had in college.

And in DnD, you get this experience every single time you play, and also you have your friends alongside you creating the story with you as you go.

IDK im starting to get way too deep and nerdy, but just wanted to finish with, the magic of DnD is the story of it, and in the creative tools it provides. at least IMO, and there isnt a video game that grants as much freedom, as this pen and paper game thats almost 40 yrs old.

Now back to work before I get fired LMAO

Also am now listening to the Robot Chicken D&D, because its awsome, listening to a team of writers/creative minds playing the game together is just awsome and hilarious. Also their ranges of experiences makes it more enjoyable, as there is always someone you can relate to imo.

if i sound like an idiot i apologize... that got profound rather quickly.. i blame lack of sleep on my part lolol

I kind of disliked the Robot Chicken thing, because it illustrated the problem some people appear to have with DnD 4 (I have not played it yet, so my only knowledge is only hearsay). It seems a lot less like role playing, and a lot more like a PnP version of a CRPG. They appear to mostly try to solve a riddle with the skills of their characters, and besides a few glimpses of cool ideas they always stay at that level of play (X is in your way, which combination of your skills y, z, a, b, lets you get across X best?) Of course there is nothing wrong with that, it is just a completely different kind of game from traditional rpgs in my opinion.

And regarding playing PnPs, just do it. There is really no reason to spend ages in this "i'd really like to try it" state. If you want to try it, get some starter book that you like for 20-30 bucks, grab a few friends who are interested and get going. Or if you don't have enough interested friends, try to get in contact with the local RPG community.

I mean... that's undermountain though. Not much roleplaying you can do when in a dungeon with literally everything trying to kill you.

I'm sure if you actually put human beings in a dungeon with literally everything trying to kill them, you could witness some riveting human drama... at least until they die

Roleplaying can reach anywhere the human condition can, and further. Just because there is battle doesn't mean there isn't a story to tell. See war stories.

Getting chased by men on horses... "RUN AWAY!" LMAO was dieing laughing that this was his solution.
JP in jail, Abigail cant find a way in. Bregor tries to give JP an alibi...JP refutes his own alibi, and then lies with a lie that can be completely misproven once someone says "no he left, then came back a couple hours later" to which JP's only defense will be "nuhuh" lmao. They need a stat sheet for problem solving

I think Abigail's problem solving skills is worse than Tudagub. Take for instance when JP gets convicted and Abigail tries to + Show Spoiler +
but unsuccessfully
rat out the contract person which would of made it worse on them if it did work. As for Tudagub at least you can tell he is trying to get out with the command confess. Abigail ends up doing moves that make people want to facepalm with rare exceptions. Either way Vincent with those debating skills and has it on point lol...

(Real question when is this weeks Rollplay?)
wait what

The actions you take as a man in peril and as a roleplayer playing someone in battle both can flesh out character. We witnessed that in the latest episode of this very show in all the choices the roleplayers made in their desperate escape. + Show Spoiler +
Geoff had Vincent spare his opponent for a full turn of noble speech, almost costing Vincent his life. JP, on the other hand, played a Tudagub who didn't hesitate in the slightest to incinerate the Lord of the town to death.
A properly architected RPG can provide for these organically created moments, resulting in not only a series of fights and numbers and results, but in a narrative. Even in the middle of battle.

Everything comes down to stats and abilities (using intimidate skill without roleplaying the intimidating), and you have fantastic powers that are nowhere near realism and things tend to get boiled down to a limited array of options. It's great fun, but I do like the less heroic characters and having to do all the detailed roleplaying of 2nd.

I know 4th doesn't expressly hinder roleplaying, but it's ease of being able to gloss over roleplaying leads to campaigns with less character development, and more "when's my next level, because I really want this encounter power". :/

I can see that although I think Chris Perkins is amazing at character and place descriptions. Also from reading a few of his blogs, he is not nearly so rigid as the rule system he developed.

But while I have not yet played 3.5, I have played d20 Star Wars revised that borrows liberally from 3.5. And there is definitely a tendency to default to "I roll to Intimidate" type thing. Our GM would stop us and and ask what we actually said, but I don't think I really got what he was going on about until watching your DMing.

When he comes back to Canada, we're hopefully going to try running a 3.5 heavily modified by some of Battlestar Galatica's attribute/ skill system while keeping the d20 system. His goal is to try and get out of the heavily mechanistic system and push more into roleplaying. So homebrew. But should be interesting.

This is really good point. Having never played table top, but now that I think about it, I believe this is where I would drift into if the DM wouldn't steer clearly out of it. The whole "can I roll to do X?" instead of first describing what I'm going to do and then wondering if I have to roll something to make it work, like shouting a to a bandit "hey dirtnap, if you try waggle that kitchen knife at me, you're in for some real trouble!" instead of "I'll roll intimidate to see if I can scare this bandit off". If that makes sense.

@daemir
Yeah, that's exactly the difference

@BeMannerDuPenner
yeah, Chris Perkins does both the penny arcade and the Robot Chicken writers D&D. There's some live stuff at some conventions or something, but I'm not as sure it's as good. As an occasional GM I really, really like his commentary on the Robot Chickens sessions as there's a bunch of things to be gleaned from his thoughts.

Off topiccish, for the video game discussion thingie:

if you gonna go play NWN2 again, get the Spell Fixes and Improvements mod, or any mod pack with it. It allows you to summon more than 1 summon spell/pet/minion at a time, so you can actually play a summoner mage. Tons of fun and cool shit. Never understood why they limited summoning to 1 in the vanilla game since like NWN1. Enemies can also do this, so hostile spell casters get a lot more dangerous since they usually have a bunch of summons memorized.
