The more I watch, the more I am enjoying this. I am amazed at Neal's ability to work on the fly. I play things pretty loose so I can reorganize stuff behind the scenes as players make choices and so there's no railroad plot. Present puzzles which have multiple methods to solve (and they usually come up with something entirely different.) But I've never been forced to improv an entire session because the main plot macguffin got destroyed.

Uh, Hellhounds don't usually take gold and stuff from dead people. I guess you can say someone else took it, but caravans always have guards, and to not find any bodies means something's gone very wrong with them. Also, someone must have seen them in the last town or passing by on the road.

This series has inspired me to start playing D&D, I am 29 and getting started is overwhelming, budget is tight but I am gonna figure out how to do this. It is only me and my brother who are going to play, so I am going to have to figure out how to do 2 player D&D! I will be the DM and/or Play a character! Is this possible?

Yeah, you can DM and play as a character - just leave all the decision making up to the other player. You can be there for combat and RollPlaying. It's kinda hard, but doable. I once had a 2 player campaign where we both played two characters so we could have a 4 member party.

Nice! Thanks for the tips! A quick question, I would rather not steal the books off the net, are there free pdf's of older versions of D&D, I don't really have the cash to buy 3 books, and we are eager to get started and just learn how to play. All I really have is a bunch of dice from my magic cards, and paper =p. Once I get the money ill try to find the best bang for my buck so we can have some quality shit to play with. Maybe some models and bigger grid paper for large maps.

It is possible to DM and play a character, but you definitely want your character to take the backseat and NEVER have them become the DM policeman to keep the other characters inline.

We've always had a small group- 2 plus 1 GM and a very inconistent 4th. The GM always plays a background character just to round out the group. I've done it myself, but quite honestly, I regret doing it. I was recommended to do it as a failsafe crutch to avoid needing to talk out of character, but I find it more of a nuisance. I hate having to control that character as I always forget him and would much rather just deal with the NPC's and focus on adapting the story based on character decisions.

If it all possible, it would be nice to recruit an interested friend. The interplay and group decisions will be more interesting for both of you. Creative thinking will go up substantially.

I'd really suggest against playing a character as the dm, that tends to not end well most of the time. Also, i am sorry to say that, but playing with only two people is hard. If at all possible, try to find a larger group. Either ask some of your friends if they are interested, or maybe google to find out if there is an open PnP society in the area you live in. This also has the advantage of maybe getting someone a bit more experienced. Having an experienced DM is very helpful, though it is definitively not necessary. Very important: If someone seems reluctant when you first ask them, don't bother them anymore. In my experience, people who don't like the idea of a PnP and only agree to play because you convinced them never like it, and the whole thing is no fun for anyone invovled.

If you play with people who are physically near you, roll20.net will not help you. What it provides is a method to provide an experience that is close to sitting around the same table when you are actually far away. Which it does very competently, but which is also not what you need.

I really doubt that older versions of the DnD books are free anywhere. Though as a beginner, i really wouldn't buy too many books anyways. I am not certain about DnD, but most systems have some kind of "starters" book for 20-30 bucks which is absolutely sufficient to play with. There is also usually a beginner adventure in there which you might want to check out. (Also, i should probably mention that DnD is not the only system out there, and probably one of the more expensive ones. Plus a lot of people really dislike the fourth edition from what i have heard, because it limits creativity or something along those lines). Some systems are free-ish, like Eclipse Phase, a transhumanist SciFi setting under Creative Commons license, though they of course also encourage you to buy hardcopies if you like the game. Other systems like Savage worlds (which i can really recommend) are very flexible and allow you to play pretty much any setting you want with only the base book for 20-30 bucks.

A few tips if you want to DM: It is your adventure. If there is nothing about it in the setting, you can just make it up. IF there is something about it in the setting, you can still ignore that and make it up. Same goes for rules. Don't waste 10 minutes of playtime trying to look up some value you don't exactly remember. Every rulebook states that the DM is the last instance for rules. Abuse that fact. Rather then spending 10 minutes wading through tables trying to find out if that goblin has armor 5 or 6, just decide it on the spot. Is shooting a dwarf behind light cover from 32m away in moonlight with an enchanted crossbow a -6? Who cares, you say it is, so it now is. (Also, ideally avoid telling your players you do that unless they ask) Different topic: Always have some additional characters prepared which you can flexibly use in different situations (a trader, a woodsman, a town guard, stuff like that). Personality and names are far more important then stats for those guys.

I'm going to disagree with you a little bit on that first part. Yeah, it is hard to DM a one player campaign, and it is hard to play a character while you DM, but it's doable. It's easier to start as a player in a group of 4 or 5, familiarize yourself with the rules and move into DMing, but that's not the only way. I bought a few books, read them and started DMing with no experience. Yeah, I didn't understand, and we fucked up and made mistakes and it was cumbersome, but the most important rule is to have fun with it. If you don't mind going in and learning by doing, then go for it. It'll be challenging, but that challenging can be fun. It gives you something to obsesses over and figure out - if you're into that sorta stuff.

Same goes for the 2nd part. Sometimes it's worth looking up that rule. Sometimes you'll want everything to be precise and accurate. It doesn't have to be - you can wing stuff, you can slide the rules, you can lie about the dice rolls you make - but sometimes you wanna look stuff up.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that while you're generally right, Simberto, there's no wrong way to play the game (which is why it's the best game ever). I'd agree with all your statements, but as mild suggestions, not even guidelines. Read the rules, and remember: The goal is to have fun, and the DM can bend/break/discard/add any rules to make the game more fun. If you wanna stick to the letter of the page, if that's the most fun for a group, then do that. Some groups I've played with have really enjoyed getting every detail of the rules right. Others don't care about the rules, they just want to explore a world.

I hate that I sound like a flower child of the 70s in this.

How this looks in my head: Abigael and Bregor leading a woman to the wizard, trying to convince her to become a prostitute for this scumbag perverted wizard. Drunk Giant Half/ogre and mostly sober Vincent Longborn, armed with 3 swords, an array of daggers, and a shield on his back.... With the 2 Elves and the women walking to the wizard shop, with the 2 big guys trying to sneak behind them, going from building to building. But Tudagub is both huge, and drunk. So he is burping, stumbling, yelling whenever he tries to whisper to Vincent. And Vincent is trying to be sneaky, but you hear his swords/shield/armor all clinking and clanging as he runs between the buildings.
