One could also argue that an honorable person would have come with $4k in hand. Personally I would have walked out when he didn't bring the money, wanted to reduce the amount AND pay half of it through paypal.

Sounds like came with $1100 in hand, asked to lower the bet amount to $2500 and will pay the remaining $1400 on Paypal
and yeah, some people probably remember the Fanatiq/Bee video from Canada Cup, where Fanatiq set up this money match between Bee and Knives, and then when he arrived, tried to tell Bee that he'd only get the match with Knives if he agreed to play Fanatiq immediately afterwards for the same amount. Everybody thought that was stupid. Also Bee DESTROYED Knives, and then destroyed Fanatiq 15-4 and 15-5 in private matches at another major a little while later
Fanatiq also challenged Bee to a $10k money match at VxG, talked immense amounts of shit on his stream about it like "does this n**** even know? he's gonna buy me a car". Bee caught wind and called him on it on twitter, Fanatiq jumped all over Bee's comments and called them 'disrespectful' and threatened to call off the match. He also, very privately, told Bee he was cancelling it because he didn't have $10k. Didn't stop him from continuing to run his mouth, claiming he cancelled the money match because he "didn't wanna give him the shine". Anyone who knew the history between those two and the results of the sets they'd played already woulda seen right through it, but the guy keeps his losses under wraps.
Guy's a grade A clown and embodies everything that's wrong with the FGC these days.
On the flipside we got Neo, who is doing everything right. That guy is all about the gambling side of the FGC as well, but he does it classy. Most of the money he wins from betting, he puts up for hype matches. If you guys remember the FChamp/Lapchi drinking match runback at the last Canada Cup for example, Neo put up the money for that. He's also much classier about the way he promotes his apparel business, which he handles himself while being in law school and travelling to majors and stuff. Neo's very personable and friendly and if you've got a ridiculous prop bet, he'll take you up on it. He's apparently much more focused on the hype, whereas Fanatiq is apparently only about trying to hustle people through video games.
I don't know either of these guys on a personal level, but I've met them both several times at tournaments, and these are my impressions

FakeSteve with that insider info hahaha. Too gooooood. This drama is so amusing.
Once in a while I have a moment where Fanatiq seems to be an alright guy. Appearances on Cross Counter shows, a major where he's amusing on the mic and NOT peddling his shit, etc. Then stuff like this happens and it's like, oh yeaaah hahahahaha.
Neo bugs the shit out of me (probably just his voice lmao) but I agree with most of your sentiments about him. There's a lot of good contrast there; you highlight that well. You can even tell a lot about the external attitudes you discussed just by their approach to the game. Fanatiq clearly plays very little, and still challenges people to ridiculous money matches, which he can't even put up the cash for, and then throws around the same classic excuses. Neo may have been an MVC2 legend, but his MVC3 "career" started relatively late/recently. And yet I'm continuously impressed by his improvement at every major, and you can tell he just cares a lot. Even though I hate Phoenix.
Foils, I believe would be the literature term.
Edit: gostunv I saw your blog the other day but I forgot to post! BlackEye came outta nowhere and has some huge names, represented well at Capcom Cup. Cool to see you post here! Good luck to you guys!

Oh wow, I didn't know you were from TL! Your fighting game roster is incredible, a bunch of fan favourites. Personally I wanna thank you for sponsoring KaneBlueRiver, I don't think there's a more deserving player on earth. A true world warrior, that guy.
If I can help you out in any way, please let me know! All the best to you and your team

Thanks guys! Don't know how it will turn out but somebody in Japan has to try out this e-sports schtick!
Currently just looking for sponsors and figuring out how to get the PC games going.
Would love to eventually be able to do partnerships like TL and EG do.
Edit: sent you a PM steve

Xbox 360 owners: There'll be a firesale on Marvel stuff this upcoming week before they get delisted. UMvC3 is going to be 83% off ($5), and all the DLC, as well as MvC2, will be 75% off.

Used to be a mod on Fanatiq's stream around the time when he was playing IWTBTG and then broke off when i realized the dude is full of shit. Funny enough, most followers i knew quit too for the same reason, lol.
As far as I can tell during my time as mod he's still pretty hung up on being the greatest money match/long set player to ever live (and then there's the extra ego of being able to play the piano without knowing how to read sheet music and a bunch of other stuff lol). Problem with that is that the person he ever beat in a long set in Ultimate who has a name is Ray Ray, and he played at least 4 people so far and got mopped the fuck up by the other 3.
He was good at the game, that I admit. At one point before the Chris G and Yipes became the players they are today ppl can make the argument that he was top 5 in all of California (which was by far the most dominant MvC group at the time), but while the overall skill level rose the dude stayed at the same spot, spending his time talking trash, hustling, and playing lol (which he never seemed to get better at). Pretty big waste of talent.
Couple that with his attitude and shadiness and you get the ultimate fraud.

Never really saw the ugly side of Fanatiq. All I can think of is that he showed that pad players can play well, and he's loyal to his Magneto-Storm-Sentinel team. Plus any time I saw him on stream, albeit 2-3 years ago, he seemed like a friendly guy. Last I heard he apologized for his persona of being the bad guy of the FGC, saying it was all for show.

Fanatiq is the Phil Hellmuth of the FGC.

Fanatiq Gamerson @MrFanatiq 49m
I gotta look at it from his p.o.v. if I went to a country for a tourney mm'd while there, left with 3k of some guys money I'd be pissed too.
---
I know, right? (By the way, 2.5k. Not 3, unless Fanatiq and Knives are the same dude, which I'm pretty sure they aren't, and definitely not 4, which I'm preeeeeetty sure was what was agreed on.)
Edit: Fanatiq says he paid for the Knives MM, which to me just raises further questions.
Edit again: MarlinPie is streaming about it. I'll transcribe what I can.
Nemo/Fanatiq agreed to $4k. Nemo showed up with $4k. Fanatiq had $1.1k. Japan refused to play without at least another $1k. US raised the bet to a total of $2.5k, and Japan agreed. Fanatiq paid 1k in cash with $1500 transferred to MarlinPie across PayPal. MarlinPie will transfer the rest to Nemo when he gets a paypal. So yeah, Fanatiq has paid the money but Nemo doesn't have it yet (or the $500 from the Knives match). "That was one scumbag point there." The Knives match was $500 which they didn't have in cash. MarlinPie says CJ paid; Fanatiq told ME that he paid for it.
Nemo is pissed because Fanatiq (apparently) played money matches after claiming he didn't have enough cash to play. Marlin said he played a MM with Fanatiq himself, in fact - only for $20 though. Also that Fanatiq was playing more later.
|
This is way too entertaining lmao
|
Oh, so apparently Nemo heard from other ppl that Fanatiq was playing money matches after the big money match was done (like, after Fanatiq's side said they can only play for 2.5k), so Japan's side was like "the fuck why didn't they just put up the rest of that money up?" Kinda moot because they actually agreed to the lowered amount, but like, they flew over with $4k plus to play. Pretty understandable why they're pissed.
Nemo got paid for the negotiated amount tho (by CJ for some reason lol, he posted screenshots of that). It's still pretty fucked up that Fanatiq showed up to a money match with an agreed upon stakes with like, nowhere close to that amount of money lol.
From what I know the bunch of times he did high stakes the amount he put up isn't actually 100% his money but from supporters. Guess no one really wanted to back him up after Nemo beat Champ & Chris in MMs at Evo.
|
He told me he paid for the match between Nemo and Knives, so he had at least another $500.
|
That's funny because CJ's screenshot shows he transferred a seperate $500 to Marlin's account, and I know for a fact Fanatiq has a paypal so why the hell the money is coming from CJ?
Btw I don't think CJ's decision to be the backer particularly smart but shoutouts to CJ for at least saving some face for us lol. Woulda been a total blowup if no money match was played because Fanatiq was a broke nigga.
|
iirc, Fanatiq's 26k and 52k MM were all backed by Hevad Khan.
Take that as you will.
|
But that was all sorted out before Fanatiq went down to Texas to play the match. As far as i know there was no money issue there.
This time it just sounded like CJ decided to back up Fanatiq on the spot.
