Yeah, that's the case for many licenses. The licensor will allow you to create a derivative product and sell it for X period of time (usually a few years). In the case of additional products (like Ultimate) that license may be renewed. But if you're selling it and the license has expired, you're in violation of the law.

Yes and this is also why they did umvc3 rather quickly after vanilla if I remember correctly. It's a terrible licensing model for video games imo, but it's not like marvel has any incentive to change their model.
Yeah, for games it is a bad license. As someone who got interested in watching UMVC3 late (at this years Evo) and played the Portal series way to late (but better late than never), it will suck to not be able to play a game because you are a late-adopter

Yeah no one watching Capcom Cup? UMVC3 should be starting in about an hour according to the schedule. For now, they will be showing USF4 and making some other announcements.
