Overview Persona 4 Arena is an upcoming fighting game slated for release in arcades as well as on the PS3 and Xbox 360. The game will feature characters from both Persona 3 and Persona 4 on the roster accompanied by their personas. It is being developed together by Atlus, the creators of the Persona series, and Arc System Works, whose fighting game credits include the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series.
Two months after the events of Persona 4, Teddie suddenly disappears. A new rumor begins to spread across Inaba about a television program that appears if one looks into a turned off TV on a rainy night; a program by the name of "P-1 Grand Prix" where high school friends fight each other.
At the same time that this rumor starts, members of the Investigation Team start to go missing. The remaining members watch this program only to discover Teddie introducing the main characters as challengers of a tournament, but with catch phrases that they wouldn't normally say. The characters are surprised by this, so they decide to get together once more and enter the TV World to find out what happened to Teddie and what he is doing. However, while entering the Midnight Channel, something goes wrong and the characters who entered are separated and somehow brainwashed into fighting each other.
Given that the story takes place two months after the events of Persona 4, which ends on March 21st, 2012, P4U will most likely take place around May 21st, 2012. The story will also tell of how Aigis (who was originally in Persona 3) came to Inaba and how she became a participant in the P-1 Grand Prix.
Mitsuru, having become a university student and socialite since the events of Persona 3, visits Inaba after having a certain object stolen from her. Akihiko, having gone to college after graduating high school and then travelling the world in order to become a better fighter, receives an invitation from Mitsuru to join her in the tournament and returns to Japan. Persona 3's weapon's seller, Officer Kurosawa (who has since left the police force) makes a non-playable appearance.
The game's story mode will initially have four characters to choose from (Yu Narukami, Chie Satonaka, Yukiko Amagi and Yosuke Hanamura), with other characters being unlocked as the Story Mode is played through. It has been stated by the game's director Kazuhisa Wada, on the P4 Arena Official Blog, that Persona 4 Arena's story mode will be around 30 to 40 hours long.

Edit: Still under construction but I will try and update as much as possible.
Sad to see not much hype in this thread, this is the fighting game I've been waiting for.
Who's everyone looking at maining? I came into the game wanting to play Labrys or Mitsuru (because I am a Chun/footsies-oriented player) or maybe Yukiko, but now I think I'm going hardcore Chie and maybe experimenting with Naoto. Chie is just tooooo cool as a character and her pressure seems impossible to deal with.
Not gonna lie, I think this is a masterful game; it is the most fundamentally sound of all airdash-offense based fighters. Every character is unique and interesting, the game is not hard to pick up, it has a low execution barrier, but it retains all of the depth of games like MB and BB. If anyone is on the fence about this game, just buy it and give your soul to it, for real.
So sour about the fact that Australia is yet to get a confirmed release date for this. Was a huge fan of BlazBlue back in the day (about a year ago ). Hope it gets shipped to our shores soon.

Pretty sure the PAL (EU) version which is released on Sept 7th works with Australian PS3's.
Tho yeah, the wait sucks and torturing myself watching all the hype/streams surrounding it certainly isn't helping.
at this point i wish i had more fighting game experience as there is so many technical things for someone who got it for being Persona related over fighting related. Right now im 2-16 online. loving it otherwise
Waited for GameStop to open and picked up my copy yesterday morning and played it for about 4 hours before work and I'm fiending to play some more lol. My main is Akihiko but I dabbled with other characters trials and I love the styles from each member of the cast. As stated already by other players Chie is fun as hell to play as, her offensive pressure is wild.
I haven't gotten on PSN to play but how is the netcode? Also I'm up for some games to help level up, I'm on PSN and my handle is KingKosi.

Almost exactly my story. Got to gamestop at 10am, had to work at 3. played the entire time in between. IMO as someone with minimal PSN experience the netcode isnt awful. Dont let the prefight scare you to much, it looks like its going to lag horribly but as the fight start it clears up a LOT.
My copy is supposed to arrive today, I'm so excited to play but the online play still needs to be fixed (360). Oh well, I will just have to practice Narukami or Naoto till then.
In P4U moves can clash aganst one another. What I'm going to say is purely speculative on my part so if anyone with more knowledge has anything to share, feel free. To me, it seems that whenever 2 moves collide without hitting a player's hittable zone (ie, the character's body) is when you get a clash. There might be some sort of priority that moves have in this game, but I have no idea. In any case, since both players are using the same move with the same character, that point is moot. The move they're doing has invincibility on startup so neither player is ever coming into contact with the other's hittable zone. Hence the clash.
What seems to be the case is that after a clash, you can cancel the rest of the move into something else. Or maybe the move automatically gets canceled. If that's the case than this video is even sillier. Both players decided to cancel their DP into another DP until the timer ran out.
They're called DP's because they share similar properties to Dragon Punches in Street Fighter, but they have some very different properties as well. For one, to perform a DP in P4U, you only need to press the B and D attack buttons simaltaneously instead of needing a forward, down, down-foward motion plus attack in SF4. The tradeoff is that it costs health to perform a DP. So they both burn all their health performing this attack until only a sliver is left which results in a draw.
Mashing DP in fighting games is similar to what 6-pooling every game is to SC2. Brainless, completely scrubby, effective against bad players and subject to a lot of ridicule.

I wasn't sure if I was going to get this game as most of my friends aren't really into fightng games and I'm pretty bad at them in general. I watched the youtube recording of the Cross Counter pre-release tournament, caved in and ran to my nearest Gamestop to pick up a copy (literally ran to get there before it closed).
When Labrys was first announced I 100% wanted to make her my main. Unfortunately, I'm already feeling kinda "meh" about her style so I'm continuing down my list to Yukiko. So far she's clicking with me a lot more and I'll probably stick with her for now. Though the more I think about it, the more I really want to try out Aigis. Selective mixup offense with decent deffensive options attracts the Blanka player in me. The fact that she does incredibly high damage is just icing on the cake.
Hope to see some Capcom game regulars playing this at WNF tonight. Been really loving Chie in this, which isn't surprising since I'm a Jam player in GG. dat 2DD oki
I'm sure a lot of top players will try and take a crack at it as they do with most games but will see where it's at in a month. I think this game will have longevity though it's pretty damn good.
- hit me up if you want, but im experiences in the 'anime' fighting game, so be ready is all ill say about that.
up to c grade, 250ish psr after 2 days. games a blast to play online
also! if you played on XBL day 1 or day 2, you may have noticed it wasnt amazing. it apparently got patched today, so should be better now ^^
as someone with 0 modern fighting game experience im a bit jealous as imsitting at E- with 48 psr. given i was 4-22 to start, but ive hit a current stride as of today and gone 5-1.

It should be the same as PSN now, yes. There was just one bug on the XBox version, otherwise the netcode is identical.
I loved BB but didn't care for the characters so much. To me, GG has some of the best characters and design I'm fighting game history and I think they fell short in BB a little.
Anyway going to try my hand at some ranked today, wish me luck!

After getting the patch all I have to say is that it's a night and day difference
Netplay is amazing now. (equal to or better than sf4 on xbox live)

Got the game and its pretty cool. They spent a lot of time giving each character a personality, and that's pretty refreshing to see. The game play is very nice, at least for someone like me without much Fighting game knowledge. The controls are not complicated and there is not an endless amount of moves to learn, but the mechanics of the game keep things very interesting. I would recommend this

Yooo this game is craaaaaaaaaaaaaazy. Thought I was going to be running Yukiko but after getting a few minutes with Akihiko, I'm sticking with da boxer.
Still don't know what I'm doing, but I'm liking Akihiko's normals/ damage/ level mechanic. Landing lvl 3 hits off ex crossups, lvl 3 4a, or throws are hella fun.
And lol @ the status ailments. Got hit with the one that reverses your controls somehow.
Ggs Trumpet, going to hit the lab hard after playing you. Akihiko Mirror was so fun, we definitely need to get more games in later.
Sung, it actually played really well on my side. The netcode is really well done honestly. I wish KOF13's would of came out as good as this seeing how I think the netcode will help this game go along way.

Agreed. I've got about 50 hours logged so far. The other day I was like, "Man, I need to take a break"...went to the computer, watched P4A match videos for about 10 minutes, couldn't help myself anymore and said "Well...that was a short break."

Both are somewhat difficult to play; Yosuke I would say is the most advanced character in the game. I won't discourage you, but if you want to play Yosuke, master the mechanics of jumping in this game. Learn your jump, double jump, super jump, airdash, instant airdash, air turn, Moonsault, and cancelling airdash into 2B into A+C.
It sounds like a lot, but most characters need to learn this stuff too, it's just more important for Yosuke. He's very unique so he can blow people up at low levels even if you're not very good, so that kind of evens things out.
I don't know much about Elizabeth, but you should definitely study her combos so you can figure out how to combo into status effects (mostly Fear/Paralyze) and pull off her insane max damage. Use EX moves a lot since you'll have meter to burn.
I don't think anyone has made a comment about the Story Mode of this game yet. I love that they made this a ligitimate sequel to the RPG with incredible story consistency. None of the characters seem forced or out of place including the Persona 3 characters. It pretty much works as if it was the next dungeon you had to do in the RPG.
The usage of mythology is still clever despite being so heavy handed (Labrys=Labyrinth, the dungeon being a maze, several bull/minotaur motifs, giant axe, and Labrys' jumping c attack actually hitting you with a maze). The set up gives a very compelling reason why everyone would be fighting each other. At least as far as Persona logic goes .
For anyone that enjoyed the Persona 4 story, but isn't into fighting games, I highly recommend you get this game. You can finish the Story Mode fights by running up to the computer and mashing light attack, or any button really, until they die. It's set to a pretty easy difficulty by default and, as far as I can tell, can't be changed. You might even enjoy the gameplay itself and try out Arcade Mode or against other people.

Thanks, loving elizabeth, its just hard because of her low health. Luckily if i get caught out of position, I can use my burst attack to get some nice distance. Just need to figure out those combos as you said.

Those were some great matches and it was nice that they added the 5v5 at the end. I'm enjoying this game a lot so far and it's fun seeing all the different unique characters being used.
the timing on double super can be tricky. it's easier if you do an a super first, i think. that could just be my experience though.
for all the aki players here, blocked kill rush, 4a, 6ab, 6b is a godlike mixup. fast crossup that allows for followup combo off the wallbounce.
also just found out if you charge the 4b followup, it's unblockable. everyone probably already knew that, but it was news to me lol
The good stuff i've found is that mitsuru's 5aaa chain is punishable on block with a kill rush if she does all 3 hits. so is her 5b if she doesn't cancel it, and if the mits player is canceling 5b into sweep (as opposed to the stab), you can just 2a her out of it.

What are you followups after a crossup 6b? I usually do a run up 5b j.b j.a JC j.a j.b 214a ender. Although I wouldn't be surprised if I can throw in some 5b j.5 loop into a super ender.
Oh and Labrys is roflllllllllllllll I was getting straight gimmicked by so many online Labrys its pretty funny.
edit: mmmm i did land dbl super once using a super into b super but I'm still not consistent with it. But this seems to be doing the trick tho.
after crossup 6b I use 5b, j.b, 5aa, 2ab, 236a, 6b (3600 damage), but the timing is somewhat strict on it so I may just switch to using the ender you listed.
Ok doing it b version first than a version makes it work 99% of the time for me now. Can't seem to land double b supers but oh well.

mmm pretty sure your ender is the best non super ender to go. 5b j.b 5.b j.b j.a jc j.a j.b 214a does less damage and the ender will drop sometimes if you aren't careful which leaves you open to an ass whooping.
Anybody playing story mode? Lol If it's as good as P3/P4 was I should seem playable for me.

Yes, for me at least it's the best fighter I've played since MvC2. Kind of similar in a lot of ways. It's very accessible to all skill levels, but the better player will almost always win. Every character has options which require a great deal of execution and practice, but also easy BnBs and universal mobility. Some other games have a higher barrier to entry or are more random. Finally, the cast is fairly balanced (unlike MvC2, lol).

Annnnnd I'm sold (though I didn't really need to be since I already bought the game, but reassurance is nice )
So still working on the story and dabbling in the other modes for trophy purposes, can I just say the score attack based trophies feel almost impossible. The AI in score attack do stupid amount of damage compared to normal fights. Also I suck at the challenges. Made it to C online, and 25% done with story, really liking it overall.
All this makes me want though is Persona 5...so ready for it.
The biggest hurdle for me is getting used to the movement since I never played games with airdashes double jumps running etc.
This game is really fun, though. They did a good job of making it accessible to new players while still having a great level of depth to seperate new players from people willing to invest time in the game to get better at it.
Remember guys to watch the demonstration of trials if you have a hard time. Sometimes it shows you extra 'moves' which aren't actually shown inputs to make the combo possible.
Hey guys I'm pretty new to fighting games, is this a good one to pick up to try to play "semi seriously" ? I played vanilla sf4 when it was out for a while but that's it. I played p4a at a mate's house and it was so fun for the little I played. So I wanted to know if it's actually hard to pick up and is there any skill ranking online ? I'm used to getting rolled but it's always easier to get better with people slightly above your level, not getting perfecte'd in 10 sec every round.
I like 8 myself. Man haven't had time to play much since Sunday because of work and I'm in dire need to get my fix lol Thinking about calling into work tomorrow to catch up on sleep and to play :/ lol
Day 2 on Persona 4 Arena, almost at C-. The online is much easier than BlazBlue (I first started out with Extend) but holy shit do Chie's auto combos piss me off. I know damn well that I would beat 99 percent of the Chie's so easily if they did not have their auto combo.
getting EXTREMELY tired of plug pullers. Was in a me rank up him rank down match and he plug pulled AFTER i had the last hit, fight didnt count and then I didnt get the chance to rank up again...
I am approaching B rank now...the sad thing is, it feels like being Masters in StarCraft II. In BW, I was D rank then found myself ranked really high in SC II only to realize that I am still worse than most of the original TL BW players.
So I've never played a Persona game, or any anime fighter really. But I've seen a bunch on Maximillians channel, and I'm quite interested. I come from a Marvel 2 background, would you guys recomend it?

Yes. This game has more in common with Marvel 2 than any other "western" fighting game, but you'll have to try to calm your mashing instincts like I am.
Dear God...I watch both of them...again. Very exciting
And I finally made it to B rank...however, it feels like a really low accomplishment since the average BB player can beat me...and sung_moon really destroyed my ego.
dont think I posted this yet, for our akihiko players:
in the corner, whatever into kill rush, 4a, 6ab, bd if they tech backwards / neutral, you get a free 2b into whatever (most consistent combo I have atm is the j.b, j.a, dj.a, dj.b, 214a You can also troll a bit with it by ending that combo early without the meteor, landing before them, and if they tech again just 2b again and do it over lol
Watching jiyuna's stream has me in awe of some of the people he gets on there.

Does it erase navis that you unlocked in score attack?
MAAAN I wish I had made it home in time to watch, gonna have to check the archives.
Also, lol, found out if akihiko has burst & 50 SP and gets a corner CH 5b, he can kill the low health characters like Naoto in one combo from 100% to dead. Now to land it in a real match.
Found some odd bug with akihiko's maziodyne (full screen electricity) super. I hit someone with it near the corner and for some reason they were to tech out before the last hit or something and punish me on HIT. Needless to say, I was mad. Still no clue why it happened after watching the replay.

Really? Chie:Mitsuru is considered to be 5:5 or in some cases 5.5:4.5 in Chie's favor. It's very hard for Mitsuru to get Chie off of her, and proper use of rolls and IAD crossups will usually let Chie get in. Mitsuru is pretty much universally 5:5 with the rushdown part of the cast, it's just that she completely dominates everybody else.
it probably is closer to even, but thats assuming the chie player is competent which im not don't really have experience playing the type of character that she is
i just cant stand the lack of range on her normals, even if she blows people up once she gets in close. not a fan of her 2b either. she's got the best corner lockdown in the game tho imo.

I was more worried about my drug habits being exposed and my shady past on the internet. Plus I have some extreme political views but there is no way that the police would arrest me for that, but still, it was scary.
And quick question, how do you properly fight Kanji? Whenever I play against him, I always run away and harass him rather than fighting him in close quarters because of his throw.
Oh my God...I hate Kanji so much. He is currently my worst matchup. Chie is alright, but it is annoying to see B-A ranked people that only know her auto.
And how do you know which side Teddie will roll from when using his awakened super?
Bleh...the thing about Tager from BlazBlue was that I was able to assault him from the air with Jin. With Kanji, he seems to be asking you to come in the air. And it is difficult to engage him up close because he can use his command grabs which does 3000 damage.

They get to choose, C is left side and D is right side.
Wow...so it is more of a coin toss? Well I guess it is a nice feature to the mind games.
If you super jump and air dash almost every character can dodge it no matter what side its from I think. I'm not 100% on that though.
Pretty much, just assume the worst and hang in the air if it's from the opposite side. If your back air dash is more floaty you can use that too, or air turn with it. I think Yukiko gets more air time that way (though she can just DP through Teddie's super, lol). A lot of character's persona normals also give them more air time.
Go into training mode, record Teddie doing the super, stand near the edge of the screen where he's going to appear and learn the timing to super jump it. You will never get hit by it again.

Just confirming this. Had a Teddie do this super to me raw 5 times in a match (damn gold bursts) and super jumping immediately after Teddie leaves the screen then air dashing dodged every single one regardless of which version or how close to the corner I was in. I was playing on Labrys who has some floatiness to her jump, but isn't particularly fast. Kanji has a good amount of invincibility on his DP and that super can pass through him as well. Though it might require some better timing than Yukiko.

I am C and I know a few combos, but the auto just does so much more damage and it has the auto mixup that the auto is just a simpler answer than trying to do more complicated things. Its like when terrans used to 2 rax every game in TvZ--sure they could win other ways, but it made things a lot easier to get the easy advantage.

If you're still winning using auto combo, you have a real long way to go in this game. Just confirm 5A into some simple oki like 5A > 5B > 2B > 2AB > 5D(D) and you'll have a lot more success. If you really need the meter, let the auto combo run until the end and then do 236C instead of the super. It's almost the same damage.
The main thing though is 5A isn't really what you want to be doing to poke anyway; 2A, 5B and 5C are much better in almost any situation. In general you want to be ending everything in a sweep or an AoA to get a hard knockdown and then do 5D(D) or 2D(D) to force them to sit there blocking on wakeup, at which point you resume your mixup game. For raw damage, most things chain into 5C > 236A > 236A > 236C at bare minimum, or 5C > 236B > 236B > 66 xx 5C xx 66 , 5A > 5C > 214C > 236236D, or 5C > 236A > 236A > 236236A , 5C > 236B > 236B > 236D/236236D type stuff if you want to spend meter, depending on the starter.
Once you understand the different ways to start and end Chie's combos, you'll realize that you can mix and match them pretty much on the fly, but there actually aren't very many things you need to memorize.

I think it's because of pirating perhaps or maybe they just don't like the idea of their games being modified. I would of love to have seen UMvsC3 on PC just to see the character mods and game mechanic tweaks. *cough* no x-factor!
I would assume its because Japan doesn't see PC gaming as a real market compared to consoles so any PC port would have to be done by a foreign company resulting in things like 6 months behind SF4 by Capcom USA, or 2 years after Blazblue:CT which isnt good for sales and not worth the politics.
just picked up this game, how bright is this game's future looking would guys say? it's so much fun, but i said that initially about SFxT and well, yeah that game was broken.

I would say the future is bright. The game is past its initial new game hype phase and tournaments are still getting just as many entries. There's been a market for this kind of game for awhile, but BB did so many things wrong and really turned off newer players. With the new Guilty Gear coming to the states soon, I think a lot of people will see how awesome that game is too and stay in the air dash community.
To prevent any flame war, I love KoF and that was not a stab at the game, but I happen to be in one of the areas where the community picked it up for real.
Yu player here, whenever I am getting comboed or getting pressured, I get a bit panicked and start spamming my Shoryuken. Does anyone else have that problem?
This seems the most appropriate place to put this. A new Persona 4 Arena is being worked on. The only 2 newcomers announced so far are Yukari and Junpei from Persona 3. Keeping with the theme that everyone from Persona 3 is crazy, Yukari is dressed up in some sort of Pink Ranger-esque Super Sentai costume. And to no one's surprise, she plays a lot like Hawkeye from Marvel vs Capcom 3. Junpei uses a bat and has some sort of baseball themed unique meter. But while he has the weirdest unique mechanic, his appearance seems the most normal of the P3 gang. Get hype, the battle for your souls is about to continue!
There are some pretty big changes to the game. Take a look at some of these if you're interested.
Stunedge, one of Japan's top P4A players twittering about the game as he finds out more about it. I believe this is where most of the information is coming from in the SRK article, but it's all in Japanese: https://twitter.com/hc0519
