I finally got it to work. Interestingly, only the Launcher was "broken". Was quite difficult to fix my button layout without it (had to go into the .xml manually). But now I can finally start it. Sadly my idea that I will run it are quite far back now, if I see your videos; they are really great! But maybe I find enough time to get a little challenge back

Hey guys I'm a bit of a newbie speedrunner myself! I'm surprised I hadn't seen this thread sooner. I put some time into Crash Bandicoot 1 and 2 but most of my time lately has been put into a little game called The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I mostly practice but I've done a few runs and my current pb is 1:41, but expect that number to come down soon. I'm really enjoying taking the first steps into this hobby/lifestyle, and of course the community has been great so I think I'll stick around for a while ^^

So, new LttP glitch found.


Allows you to skip three bosses (from what I understand, anyway) including Moldorm and Aga1 (no more BB RNG!).

And of course there is a ton of category drama now haha.

Metroid Prime 2, lets you skip Dark Samus 4, which is heavily RNG dependent. Saves like a minute maybe + RNG.
Miles said this would be a diiferent category, I cant see why.



Furnace Fun skip, skips fake credits, saves like 5 Minutes. Also skips a lot of RNG from FF questions I guess.

Also I dont understand how the DW Flute would be a new category. any% no s+q, no eg, no oob, no DW flute sounds pretty silly aswell, I guess they'll just add a new point to it when new stuff is discovered, its a bad joke really.

any% without the new skip for ALTTP will probably be like all dungeons/all bosses or something like that. From what I understand the only person who wants the new skip to be a new category is Krysstal which is kinda silly and makes a lot of sense at the same time. It is a massive skip and skips a lot of the places people lose time. It should be looked at carefully before any decision is made shit like that shouldn't be rushed

Any% ALTTP isn't all dungeons/all bosses... any% ALTTP already skips most of the game. What they're talking about is the category that's already restricted to prevent skipping 90% of the content and because of that it makes sense to disallow the new glitch that lets you skip three bosses because if that's allowed and then another skip is found that's allowed, then you're skipping nearly the same amount of content with slower glitches.

I agree, this is a nice find but not really usefull in any "classic" categories. Any% is already way faster than this and this can't be done in all dungeon.

It would have be a new and weird category like 'All dungeons minus 3" which I don't think is going to be run a lot.

Well the argument is that the category was Any% no OoB/no S&Q, this glitch isn't OoB or S&Q so in theory qualifies for the category. My understanding is that everyone except Kryssstal is fine with this glitch, but Krys wants a new category.

In regards to the new ALttP glitch: There's a lot of dynamics to this issue that may not be obvious at first. For one thing it's important to understand that the title of a category doesn't dictate all of it's rules. Some of these are obvious, for example "No S+Q no OOB" doesn't specify that you can't use turbo, or up+down or left+right or other clearly banned things. But beyond what is clearly illegal, we need to look toward the purpose of each category. This is a new glitch, the nature of which (as far as i know) hasn't really existed in this game before, and that's memory corruption.

If the objective of the game is simply to complete it as fast as possible we use EG and beat the game in 2 minutes. The reason we have other categories is specifically for the content they produce. No EG allows all other forms of OOB and skips most dungeons, but displays a lot of very precise frame or pixel perfect maneuvers and a difficult "underleveled" late game(basically running the last dungeon and Ganon with like 5 hearts). The "No S+Q/OOB" category was intended to be the least broken, with no large sequence breaks, and every dungeon completed. Although some dungeons are broken, like Ice Palace via the Ice Palace bomb jump, this is still a small sequence break(if you would even call it that) compared to skipping multiple bosses and entire dungeons.

It was considered in the past whether the category name should be changed to include "all bosses" or something like that but it was deemed unnecessary, because without OOB there was no way to skip bosses. With that in mind it should be accepted that any glitch that allows for skips similar to those OOB allows(even if it doesn't technically take you out of bounds) should at least be reviewed maturely to determine if a new category need to be formed to include it, or if it should be allowed in either the No EG or No OOB category.

Kryssstal was very vocal about maintaining the integrity of the old category, but the internet's propensity for personal attacks and semantic arguing made it hard for any real progress to be made. Now that the initial flux of garbage in #alttp has calmed down it's clear that most players of high level in the game agree with Kryssstal's sentiment, and agree that the so called "Legacy Category" should not include this glitch to maintain the purpose that it's always had. Now the challenge seems to be how to prevent a similar problem in the future. Is there a way to label the category now to apply to every new situation presented in the future? I personally don't think there is a solution like that. I hope that this conflict can serve as a precedent for situations like this in the future, and that the community can act with maturity to resolve these issues if they arise again.

I heard form multiple players that I respect very much that during this mess they legitimately considered quitting the game and that makes me very sad, and misinformation has led people to believe that Kryssstal's behavior was selfish and that she was defying everyone else with her persistence, and this is untrue and even insulting. there's still a lot more that can be said, but I hope this small essay has brought some light to the issues present, and that anyone who reads this will not be so quick to pass judgment without first understanding the present issues more thoroughly. Why don't they just call it "all bosses" like originally intended? That seems like it would fix anything like this in the future.

"All Bosses" would still use this glitch optimally. There would still be the large sequence break, and the bosses skipped in the early game would be wrecked by late game items.
Also "All Bosses/ All Dungeons" is another category that allows all forms of OOB, including EG. So then you would have to add other stipulations(No OOB, No S+Q, No YBA etc) and then we're back where we started. It's being resolved though, most people are in agreement about the purpose of each category and how they should be defined. Future proofing seems to be the difficult part, but hopefully this event can lead as an example anytime a future issue of similar nature arises.

Oh I see, didn't know that. Seems like it might end up like a really long winded category name.

Anyway, been trying to run SM64. All the clips are so boring to practice. Enjoy the movement much more.

Ya I feel similarly Ragequit. On a side note, i've picked up Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and damn it's a lot of fun. Uses a quake
3 engine so movement mechanics also apply to JK2:JO.

I've been lurking the quake live thread a bit to learn haha.

Just add "No MC" to it. No memory corruption. Job done.

Its a bit dramatic tbh. I can see both sides. Its not outside the rules at all so its legit.

On the other side the whole "essence" of the category was it practically being a pure run where no bosses were skipped and the games original route was followed as intended.

So yeah...but still, just make it a new category, its not really an issue lol. From the video the glitch is easy as fuck for experienced runners and running both categorys wouldnt be that hard for anybody.

Yeah it never should have been such an issue in the first place. It was something that needed at least some discussion but man I guess people just love to argue lol because it was a mess. There were like a hundred more people in the channel that day and most of them were very convicted and very uninformed, and most of them haven't been seen since. I just saw a few comments about it in this thread that may lead to more misinformation (even though not intentionally malicious) and wanted to make a relatively concise and informative post to clear it up and prevent any more negativity from perpetuating unnecessarily. I'm not really an authority on it though, stop by #alttp on the srl irc if you're interested in exploring it further!

In regards to the glitch itself, yes it is very easy to do. If you can press 2 buttons at the same time, you can execute the glitch. The routing and making use of the glitch is pretty interesting and dynamic though. It removes the worst RNG and you enter dark world with less hearts and no master sword so it increases the challenge a bit as well, which is pretty cool. I'm still a nub so I'm still practicing the classic category until I'm more comfortable with the late game, but I intend to mess around with this new category in the future as well.
