Total prizepool.

It's basically 10$ per player, plus 10k for SF4 and 20k for MK9.

SSF4 1520 players
UMvC3 1248 players
KOF 960 players
SFxT 448 teams or 896 players
SCV 416 players
MK 304 players

Pretty sure it's the overall pool for each event. I don't know if there's an actual breakdown anywhere (most fighting game tournaments don't tend to post these) but top 8 get paid.

Wasn't uryo playing viper?

Yeah, he was but I wanted to know if you felt he should've just stayed with Sakura. I wouldn't think Uryo would counter pick as most of the Japanese (outside of Kindevu anyway) do not switch characters. Uryo's Viper (still got the whole 60% damage combos) is great, but Dieminion is way too familiar with Viper in general, just from seeing how Dieminion blocked nearly most of Uryo's burn kick cross up attempts.

Guile isn't a good matchup for sakura. Sak can't really get in except with a random air tatsu or preemptive ground tatsu. Viper usually does fine vs guile, it just looked bad because dieminion was playing out of his mind

E-Sports is competitive video gaming with a spectator fan base. Do not take the word "Sports" literally.

I know he had a day job a few years ago as a community manager for like dungeon fighter online or something, but I doubt he does currently. I mean he went to almost every road to evo event over the past 2-3 months which entails Flying to some random city in the country on Weds or Thurs, playing videogames all weekend and then flying home Monday, and doing this pretty much every weekend or every other weekend.

That being said, almost every pro fighting game player needs other sources of income rather than tourney winnings, since if you dont get 1st or 2nd you're probably not even covering your travel costs to most (non evo) tournaments.

Justin Wong can legitimately expect to win one or more games per event. It's kind of scary, and the only way to currently support yourself in the FGC.

that's why i legitimately think the fgc is the best and most passionate community there is. there's all these obstacles you have to pass to play the game, shitty online play(imagine sc2 with 2 second delay) small prizepools yet they still manage to get it done. i mean you gotta love what you do in order to keep going, and you see their love of the game when you hear the fans get hype or the player's expressions after winning.

there are players who drive 2-3 hours every wednesday or thursday to compete in their local weekly fighting game tournament.

Fun part being that he doesn't even practice that much.

It's also worth noting a lot of these players, when it comes to EVO anyway, are playing for prestige and competition more than anything. The grand prize at EVO could have been a free happy meal from McDonalds and you'd have similar numbers. Bigger prize pots are just icing.

Ricky Ortiz used to work at my company and he went to events allllll the time which meant he was out every other Friday or so, sometimes Thursday too. I'm pretty sure he went into vacation time debt haha.

It seems that people in FGC are much more comfortable with the day job + competitive hobby aspect rather than trying to make FGC their job, like a lot of people in ESPORTS

He was a contract QA tester. I don't watch FGTV very often so I don't know what he's doing besides that, if anything. It's probably no surprise that he was a pretty good tester though =]

Yeh, I'm pretty sure that wasn't the point.

I'm pretty sure it was. Have a joke at the end of the video to give everyone an extra laugh.

Or it could have been the Phoenix doing an "air-throw" on the tank. Since you know, the entire video was kinda based around throws, with a fair focus on air-throws.

That's the obvious reason. I'm not gonna bother dragging this on. I'll try to clarify.

It was a double entendre, meant as a shoutout to the E-sports community (to those unfamiliar with the Fighting Game scene), as well as a joke for the FGC.

Felt like commenting on this, it didn't have anything to do with esports.
We where originally making the vid for UCSD and trying to represent all the games they had, but we decided to do it for evo instead.
It just ended up at the end of the video beacuse it's was really slow paced and didn't fit in well with the rest of the clips.
It's unfortunate, but I can't say I was suprised by the stream chat's reaction

Hey shoutouts to error1, veteran FGC contributor, welcome to Teamliquid =)

I thought the SC2 clip at the end was just funny because it still fits in the context of an air throw. Stream monsters are who they are, and it's very easy to rile them up. There were already a bunch of FGC/esports comparisons all Evo weekend, this just provided more fodder for the stream monsters. You can argue back and forth internally about whether it was worth including this clip, but this isn't what sparked the FGC/esports debate in the stream chat initially by any means. It had been going on long before that.
