The ESO website was updated, and there's a FAQ regarding the Standard/Imperial editions: http://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/storefaq
They still don't exactly say what an Imperial is, but it seems to be a class. You also get bonuses, gear and what not from the Imperial edition, and the Explorer's pack, which allows you to join any alliance with any race. Imperial edition is $80.
I can't find anything that suggests they scrapped the cash shop. When I google it, I only find news of ESO having a cash shop, and they all date to August 2013. Somehow, considering the super greedy approach they're taking with the Imperial edition, I doubt they will cancel the cash shop.
There's also early access when you pre-order the game.
I don't know. Zenimax seems to focus a whole lot on the release and the hype to maximize the profits from the sales. It makes me think they completely lack any long-term plan for the game, and are pretty much planning on milking it throughout the first year. I, like others, think that the game will have very good sales, and then the subscriptions will drop by 70 to 80%. The game will then switch to F2P after a year or so. That being said, I doubt the whole Imperial thing was introduced as a last resort to make more money, it was probably planned all along.
Gosh, it all looks so greedy, I can't get over it.

An Imperial is a member of the Imperial race. That's what they are in all other TES games at least. Like Bretons, Argonians, Orcs, etc.

Bleeeeeehhh the game looked pretty awesome, but now this business model....
Like if you don't get the pre-order bonuses and the Imperial Edition, it's very discouraging to start playing this game.

On one hand, the trailers are pretty awesome. The quality is high, and the action is entertaining (to me personally at least). I also don't mind the game having a monthly fee. I hope that will lead to the game being without limits in terms of what race / class / whatever you want to play.

Else you probably have to pay extra in the cash shop for it. The pre order bonus lets you play any race in any alliance. Otherwise your limited to a fixed race/alliance combo.

I miss the old days where you buy a game, pay a monthly fee, and everything is there to be used, no unlockables, no preorder bonuses that are unavailable otherwise, no cash shop...
Why is a game that wants to have a monthly fee still expecting us to buy additional stuff for extra cash? Isn't that the freemium approach?

FFXIV is pretty much like that.
Buy the game, free trial, then sub. No content is locked so long as you keep subbing. Square Enix is even actively combating such practices (http://support.na.square-enix.com/faqarticle.php?id=5382&la=1&kid=68095), so no cash shop.
Regarding ESO, most likely, the possibility to switch alliance or to play any race within any alliance will be offered for a price later on. It certainly wouldn't surprise me.

WoW has been doing that for years.

I'm surprised no-one's wondering about what the giant chains coming out of the sky thing was. I, for one, have no idea what would bring a plague of the undead.

Indeed times are gone where you play Diablo on battlenet Servers and only getting some advertisements in the headder. Gone are the time where you get games like GW1 that are b2p with no subscription and a really minimalistic shop. I always disliked the sub-based models as I found them greedy being 15 € a month. But now I sincerly wish MMO's to be sub-based with no cash shop. Cash shops destroy gaming. Companies got greedier and greedier and people let it go for to long (and even now). Now we suffer from games which content is complete crap, cut out stuff, hold-back convinience to sell in shop etc.

Uh, your link is about external RMT. That has nothing to do with an ingame shop.

That doesn't make it good either. WoW was sub-based. Than they added the shop. And then RMAH (is it there, I didn't follow). We all know that blizzard grew to a really greedy company over the last years. Even to a point where a lot of year-long fans turned by and will never spend any money on blizzard products anymore (I'm one of them).

I don't think WoW has anything in the shop that isn't purely cosmetic but I could be wrong. The only thing you can buy other than cosmetics (pets, mounts, etc.) are services like race and server change.

Doesn't matter. In a sub-based game, everything should be in the game 100%. No shop. Subscription + Shop is money grab. Good for business, bad for the customer.

It matters a lot if you're going to compare a game with an only cosmetic shop vs a game that has real advantages to spending money in the shop. It's the entire point of discussing micro-transactions or cash shops. Does the game have P2W elements or are the shops strictly cosmetic. I mean, it's really the only thing that matters when discussion in-game buying.

Wait... I know they didn't care about lore, since they're shitting all over the canon, but now if you get the Explorers pack you can play ANY RACE in ANY FACTION? So we can have Altmer players fighting alongside Dunmer? Argonians with Redguard? Wtf? How can they claim this is an Elder Scrolls, story driven game with a straight face.

The more expensive version gives you another race and unique look for crafted armors/weapons ^^
