The Lin hype train base comes from the fact that he's Asian-American, which means that he can speak English and can communicate to the media. I won't talk about the upbringing and his path as that's not the main issue. Also note that I do not buy into Linsanity.

Asians have few role models in basketball, almost none that are down-to-earth and normal as Lin. Sure, there's Yao Ming, but he is a giant at 7'6". How can ordinary people relate to him and his success because of his height? There are other players such as Wang Zhizhi or Yi Jianlian, but they don't speak English nor performed well in their careers, combined with the fact that they're tall as well. Lin represents the average Asian (above average in height for most Asians) and person that can have success with hard work and determination. Finally, the NBA is lucky that his mother is Chinese and his father is Taiwanese, so that both countries can cheer for him; I highly doubt China and its fans would regard Lin as much if he was fully Taiwanese.
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

Haha, yeah. This is so true. Go to any Knicks board now and look at some of the ridiculous trade proposals they put up.

Meanwhile, I think Nash could make even me look like an NBA quality players.

Will be a sad day when he retires.

I have no idea why Mike Brown left Kapono in for the entirety of the 4th.

Dudley abused him on defense and he has yet to make a shot in a game where it mattered. Barnes should have been in his place.

Lin represents the average Asian (above average in height for most Asians) and person that can have success with hard work and determination.

That surely explains his popularity amongst asians, including asian-americans. But I don't think that's the main appeal for non-asians; a lot of it has to do with the underdog story and the fact that he's playing at a pretty high level despite being being pretty much unknown. Also because he's leading his underachieving team to wins.

Finally, the NBA is lucky that his mother is Chinese and his father is Taiwanese, so that both countries can cheer for him; I highly doubt China and its fans would regard Lin as much if he was fully Taiwanese.

Why would you doubt that? Mainlanders view Taiwan as "theirs" and have no problem adopting Taiwanese stars as their own (often to the chagrin of Taiwanese). E.g., Jay Chou. The ethnic connection would probably be enough.

Second, it's not that "lucky"; the vast majority of Taiwanese immigrants to the US are "Chinese" (wai sheng ren). Third, if Lin were fully "wai sheng ren," the Taiwanese would still cheer for him. A lot of influential figures in Taiwanese culture are wai sheng ren; many are in fact Taiwanese-Americans who moved back.
