Holy shit, I am so hyped, probably more hyped than Battlefield 3. When I first heard of the news, I literally got nerd chills. ROTK games from KOEI are so much better than the shit Dynasty Warriors they mass produce for the Western market.
In news that very few Western people noticed with all the other madness happening in Japan, Tecmo Koei has announced Romance of the Three Kingdoms XII, a new entry in its micro-micromanagement sim set during an era of ancient Chinese civil war.
Due for a Japanese release in 2012 and designed for the PC, ROTK XII is going to feature real-time battles and will support touch-screen computer monitors. In addition, low-end PCs will be able to run it, which is hardly a surprise given the series' traditionally undemanding visual style.
I positively love Koei games from the 16 bit era like ROTK, Gemfire, New Horizons, etc and am interested in seeing this game come to the US. Even if it doesn't, expect a fan translation patch.
I'd really like to see a new version of the Uncharted Waters series, New Horizons was sick as fuck.
hermmm is there a really high learning curve to play these? I've never tried before, but I hated strategy games like hearts of iron where there was too much shit goingo n
These types of games are really all about micromanagement. There is combat, but oftentimes you can win the campaigns through several win mechanisms like alliances, espionage, etc.
They're not RTSes by any stretch, tend to be turn or tic based and are (AFIK) not multiplayer at all. They're more there to stroke your cerebrum and cerebellum with lots and lots of towns to manage, units to move around, political intrigue, etc.
I loved the older ones, took so long to finish couldn't believe my young attention span back then got through them. Going to be looking forward to this one!
Man, ROTK 5 was my favourite game when i was a kid. I remember playing it with my mates all the time.
I still play 10 and 11, and hopefully this new one is hero based like x. I felt that the battles in xi werent as fun as in the previous games. I'll defintely be grabbing a korean version of the game +puk if they ever make it. Half the fun of rotk was the puk.
Oh dear god. Words cannot explain how hyped I am for this shit. I hope they go for a rotk 8 feel because in my opinion that's the best rotk hands down.
I hope it gets localized because I am a huge fan of DW, ROTK both the game and the novel as well as Chinese Three Kingdoms Era History. This is gonna be pretty damn epic.
With that said, ROTK 5/6 is my favourite. 7/8 were also quite fun because you could play the game like an RPG if you served under someone, but i still prefer starting as a ruler by default.
I'm not a big fan of the "tactical view" of the map they started to use since 9, so fingers crossed for 12. Wish there was more information on their site.
Head to a friend's house on a Friday night. Pop RoT3K4 into the SNES. Create custom rulers and officers to start from 1 province. Order pizza. Proceed not to sleep for an entire weekend.
Such good memories. I'm so hyped. I should organize another RoT3K weekend in celebration of this!
Although personally 10 is my favourite followed by 2.
i had stopped playing at 10, but i remembered that it was by far my favorite. 7 up until then had introduced the single officer RPG style that i really disliked. i remember starting with 4, now that was a classic..
wow this might actually be awesome!! much better than that Dynasty Warriors trash anyway. is it confirmed that it'll be released in Europe/PAL regions?

too bad i played the crap out of XI lol
Well, it's not problem of people not playing XI, but of how everyone torrents the thing >.> I'm hoping fan community comes up with great Korean patch like they did with XI PK though.

hahaha yesssssssss. I used to play it on my friend's Saturn though (which had awesome remixed music and much better graphics), and we'd each create one-province custom rulers along with a third custom ruler and go for domination, usually in the scenarios before Cao Cao controls almost everything. We'd usually end the game around the time we both split the map because it was almost pointless for us to fight each other given that we could see each other's cities and officers, though.
I tried playing another RTK game after 4, I think it was 6 or 7, but it was very different and not localized so I was having a tough time figuring out what exactly to do. These games get more and more complex with each version and I think it's pretty hard to actually break back into it with this new game, but I may give it a try.

thanks for the screens. looks like they are using art from some of the older series. still i like it, the terrain is MUCH better and rotk is all about gameplay anyways.
Since this is rumoured to be the last in the series and all, I really wish they would've added the RPG-esque functionality of 7/8/10. Being a ruler is too much work for me half the time.
It looks very underwhelming but I love these games enough not to be daunted by .. what I'm praying are alpha screenshots.. praying...
Oh who am I even kidding I'm going to buy it no matter how it looks or if it gives the impression that you're fighting with 12 guys and a 12000 number above their head!
What type of game is Romance of the Three Kingdoms? especially XI(so I can maybe try it if you can convince me). Is it like Heroes of Might and magic? Civilization? Tell me I want to get nerdchills as well! What so good with this game?
Edit:
Is it like Warlords?! Cause I love Warlords!!! Where are you Warlords V!!!?
It's like....HoMM3 combined with Lords of the Realm with a lot more complexity, a lot of micromanaging and non-battlefield-level strategy. A pretty in-depth ruler simulator if you will.
So it appears the release date is March 3rd, 2012 (Pretty Soon!) and that battles in game will play out in an RTS style (nobody here likes RTS's though right?) I'm pretty excited...
great scott these games still exist? I remember playing the Korean versions of ROTK VII and VIII? Something like that? Oh man these games were soooo fun to play, even if I didn't know what the hell was going on.
When it does get released, will there be the possibility of an English hack translation or will I have to learn how to sift through all the japanese?
I got ROTK XI last night after I read this thread, just to check it out and I loved it *-* So much fun, definately going to get XII when it comes out! :D ty for showing me this
Guys, once a month I will scan through Koei forum, http://the-scholars.com, and other JRPG site for this game's news and update. I still can not find any news regarding the English version of the game. As we all know, it took a few years for ROTK11 to have an official English release. Even though there are some nice Eng-patch out there, they are not a complete translation. So the question is
1. Have you heard of official news or even rumor about English release? 2. I am thinking of buying Japanese version of the game and use this patch http://the-scholars.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22412 Do you have any other English patch to recommend?
