Team games work just as well as 1v1 also and are really fun. Player base is not actually that small, just that SC2 is massive. I think this RTS deserves more attention. If you are an RTS fan I don't think it can be bad to own it, especially if you shop around and get it for cheap. It often features in Steam sales.

1vs1 Arabia is quite challenging, way more than sc2 at least (bw was harder too due the 12 unit in hand max and the harder spellcasting). Having to deal with a different map each game and knowing how to abuse it or how to defend with incredibly far wood is requiring way more game understanding than the always same map like in sc2.

Yeah scouting is actually scouting rather than just looking for specific buildings etc.

I tried to learn the dueling maybe 6 months ago, but it was really difficult to start improving as most opponents were way above my level and even then I didn't find matches quick enough to get consistent improvement going. I don't mind getting totally outplayed, but it's really bothersome if you can't find enough practice matches to close the gap. Don't be discouraged by this. The nature of Q3 duels makes it so that if even a small skill difference exists between two opponents, the match ends in a complete blowout most of the times. 10-2 or 10-1 isn't at all uncommon. It's only when opponents are very well matched that close matches occur. It's a simple result of the fact that an early advantage in the game (picking up megahealth first) spirals into more advantage (item control), which makes it even harder to lose this advantage once you have it (it's almost impossible to break a player who controls RA and MH unless you're playing a very large map). Once a better player takes a small lead, that lead will turn huge given enough time. Just keep playing versus the regulars, the skillmatching will do a pretty good job in not pitting you against Stermy or Cypher if you lose to them all the time;) -- Also, and I don't know if this is your thing at all: boardgames Don't just think of the well-known ones like Chess, Go, Monopoly, Risk and Chutes 'n Ladders. There are quite thematic, diverse and strategic boardgames out there, some very well suited to 1v1 play and skill-based (minimal random/luck driven elements). For a light 1v1 positioning/deduction game, I'd recommend Mr Jack. The rules are pretty quick to learn, yet after your initial game or two learning the flow of the game, some pretty intense mindgames can ensue. A more complicated card/deck building game is Dominion. The basic idea is that you use cards from your hand to buy more cards that increase the buying/drawing power of your deck, which in turns lets you buy more cards, etc. Twist being - none of that gets you any points. For those, you'll have to buy land (provinces, dutchies, etc) that decrease the effectiveness of your deck by being generally useless during the game and clogging up your hand. The game is a pretty interesting quest of deck balancing and pretty well suited for 1v1 (though it scales nicely up to 5 players.)

http://www.tempestchess.com/ Tempest is just chess, but with no turns, so you can move as many pieces as you want(though there is a cooldown timer) The game provides a few different game mode like 1v1v1v1, tournament style, 2v2, 1v1 speed mode, or just 1v1 standard, (have not played in a long time, maybe there are other modes) In terms of strategy, it is completely different from chess with quick reaction and finger speed, you can dodge incoming attacks. I got into this game through TL, because some said it can train multitask. Even though i didnt really improve that much, tempest is definitely one of the most interesting game. GLHF

The main two I've been playing recently on PSN with my buddy is Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars and Rag Doll Kung Fu. SARPBC is like soccer except your "player" is a car that you can jump around, do tricks and whatever to try and get the huge ball into the enemy net. There is 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 modes. The tricks are actually somewhat complicated and pretty rewarding. Rag Doll Kung fu is a Super Smash Bros clone but with rag dolls that is super hilarious and super fun. It can be 1v1 or up to 4v4 I think.

I am not sure of these are still around for easy internet-based multiplayer, but AOE2/3, RA3 are good games imo. For fighting games, you two can try Touhou (12 iirc). I think it's an incredibly hard game.
