Good 1v1 competitive game? (That isn't Starcraft)

Salivanth Australia1071 Posts September 06 2011 13:17 GMT #1 I have a friend who doesn't want to play StarCraft, unfortunately, due to problems I won't go into (They're SC specific, so not important for this thread), but we want to be able to play a competitive game. We've tried HoN and LoL, but aren't really fans of having to rely on other people. So ideally, we would like a 1v1 game, so we could play against each other. 2v2 would also be acceptable. Our ideal game would be competitive, 1v1, real-time, and ideally, free to play. It would also need to have some sort of competitive scene so that we weren't just always playing against each other. I know this is a pretty tall order to ask, but any ideas? TL knows their competitive games after all!

Or you could get with the times and play SSF4:AE or MvC3 idk me and my friends used to play everything with a scoreboard including geometry wars, 1945:Strikers 2/3, donkey kong, etc, competitively (high score setting/beating). Get creative.

The game is free to play "pubs", and with a very small subscription (that I believe only one of the two players needs) you can host custom games, modify any flexible game settings, and invite your friends into your games. It's also incredibly fun and while I've only ever dueled once or twice in QL (played like 10 times total) I can say it was some of the most FPS fun I've ever had. I wish I had local friends that would play.

You'll have lots of fun playing 1v1 and then there's a competitive scene when you feel like it. In addition, there are quite a few Australian players. Edit: It's also free.

Fighter games are compettitve if you want to get into the scene. Magic the Gathering TCG is very fun and competitve to play as well

I tried to learn the dueling maybe 6 months ago, but it was really difficult to start improving as most opponents were way above my level and even then I didn't find matches quick enough to get consistent improvement going. I don't mind getting totally outplayed, but it's really bothersome if you can't find enough practice matches to close the gap.
