The team competition can be fun, but the scene is pretty small and has been for a long time. imo just go play Quake Live. It fits all the criteria you listed above.

So i dont really get where my reading skills lack. But since you seem to be so much smarter maybe you can enlight me At this point I'm fairly sure you're trolling. In case you are not let's take a look at the sentence. "It's closer to a squad based game of tag than an RTS." The 'game of tag' is the important part. The 'squad based' is just an attribute. Similar to how the important part of a sentence is generally a noun and adjectives are used to describe that noun. Therefore it is safe to assume that in most cases the adjective is less important than the noun. Additionally you'll notice that not only did I make my point clear by properly structuring my sentence, but I also made it foolproof by comparing a 'game of tag' to 'RTS'. You'll notice that 'game of tag' and 'Real-Time-Strategy game' are both nouns. You'll also notice that 'squad based' is not a noun. Therefore it is safe to assume that squad based is not necessarily relevant to the comparison. Both these factors contribute to the clear statement of this sentence and nobody in their right mind would be led to believe I was comparing 'squad based' to 'RTS'.

Did I miss the part in the OP where he was specifically looking for an old-school RTS? Grow up. You can bicker like a child over the definition of RTS, or just accept the fact that it's an offshoot of the old-school RTS genre that Relic started with Company of Heroes. I wouldn't recommend DoW2 to anyone that's truly after a competitive game, for a few simple reasons 1) the current playerbase is really small (~4000 players online at peak time, and they're spread between the RTS part, and Last Stand) 2) there are lots of random effects in the game that can swing the outcome of fights one way or the other (random special melee attacks that send units flying, sync-kills that lock your unit up in combat for a time, etc.). 3) it's just plain imbalanced in a lot of different counter-related ways e.g. some armies have Infiltration long before other armies can reasonably counter it, thus fall behind very quickly with little hope of catching back up, units like Wraithguard are absolute killing machines unless you get something into melee with them, which some armies are terrible at, etc. But, it still has its merits. If you're looking for team-based RTS matches (i.e. non-competitive), which SC2 is horrible at, you'll probably have a lot more fun with DoW2:Retribution. The number of different choices along the simplicity, elegance and power of teamwork make it much more enjoyable than smashing your head against the brickwall that is SC2 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4.

You should pay attention to the units and voice actors in the game its just amazing. Have jet to see another game that even comes close to this one in that department. "If a mouse farts in this god damned minefield, I want his ass blown sky high!" -American Engineers "Some people think we are compensating for something" - King Tiger haha good times gold i say GOLD.

I guess it depends on where you see the community. the gamereplays community for DOW2 is awesome. There are a few whiners and bmer's but like in sc2, the respective amount of those people to good people is heavly in favour of the good people. There are weekly tournaments afaik though They are starting to slow down as of late. The game itself is a mix of rts and squad based. Its far more tatical than sc2. You have to carefully plan out what you want to secure and when. What units will do well in certain terrain. Where to go for cover and such. in sc2 the skill is more macro based and more about having the right unit comp. DOW2 is more about getting the right upgrades for your troops and putting them in the right place to take points and win the match by basically choking out your enemy. Auctally on the same page COH is pretty good too. Same type of thing and again a amazing community. I auctally pefer coh to dow2 just because coh is a little more tatical and requires a little more skill. Auctally HuK was a top COH player before he started playing sc2. There is a competitve scene in COH. With a few tournaments going on here and there. Many of the tops players have moved on but a number still remain. A lot of replays are getting released too and the community still wants the game to flourish Also Warcraft 3 is a big one. HUGE scene compared to my other suggestions. A lot of history and still a good sized scene. Nothing like it was. I tend to think of it as what bw was outside of Korea. Same size, and a decent league and tournaments going on. Still many pros for wc3. Some do stream like Lucifer. FPVOD's are still coming out often by chinese players. youe likely to find more games via waaghtv then by stream. Though blizzard has stopped supporting the game. Many orgs like WCG still support the game.
