So I decided to see what the fuss is about with this whole Flame Sentinel Chain spectre deal, and oh myyyy goooooodddddd it does so much damage. It has nothing to do with chain, Flame Sentinel + Minion Damage just does so much damage, almost 1 shots mobs in merci docks. Now I can see why people go for the god awful minion uniques because it lets them have more of those guys. Giving them chain was just useful and soon I'll have the links to do LMP + Chain as well.
So then I took my awesome Flame Sentinels and alch'd a map and ran it np 'cause I'm a summoner and then 5 maps dropped awww yeah.
But oh man changing a few of my linked skills around and putting Minion Damage on both Skeleton and Zombie holy, I think zombies do approx 1.5k phys damage to begin with, and now not only do they do even more but Minion Damage applies to Minion Instability explosion. Can clear docks now at a pretty respectable speed.

Fuck lag spikes. 2 days of play gone in 2 seconds. What a fucking joke.

Why would you use cold pen and frostbite? Cold pen lowers the max resist while frostbite lowers the actual resist. So having both seems like a waste to me.

Well frostbite makes enemies "Lose 45% Cold resistance" at lvl 16 atm, then my cold penetration "Penetrates 31% cold resistance" at lvl 16 as well
So wouldn't that cause my enemies to basically be at negative % of cold resistance so my ice spells do more damage?

Nevermind, im stupid and got the whole mechanic wrong :/

From the news post today:
There are also two things we remembered about recently that it turns out many advanced players don't know! They've been in the game for ages, but they were undocumented. The first is that you can hold alt (or whatever highlight key) while hovering an item in the trade screen to see its item level. The other is that you can hover over an item with the mouse cursor and press Ctrl+C to copy its properties into your clipboard.
Really wish I knew that!

That cold, empty feeling as you reach the end of your supply of a currency, not having got the result you wanted, and realise just how much you threw away.

Lvl65 Lightning Witch here, farming Docks right now, but planning on doing the first maps this weekend.
Seeing those prices above, and also skimming through the trade-forums, i came to realize that while i have a basic understanding of what is valuable to everybody (5L, 6L, Resists) and to a witch in particular (lots of ES, Haste/Crit, Spelldamage), my understanding of every other class, and in particular all those +lightning/fire/cold-damage attributes on gear, which is useless for a witch that only uses spells, i very much lacking.
I wouldn't for a second doubt that i sold gear to the vendor that might've been worth dozens of exalteds (cumulated ofc) just because i don't know whats valuable.
Could someone shed a little bit of light on that, especially why for instance that bow up there is so valuable? Who in particular needs +dmg-multiplier, what kind of items are "highlights" and which rolls desireable.
Thanks in advance.

Here's how I understand things. There are quite a few "flat" added damage sources in the game, and quite a few %based attack speed increases. These two things play very, very well together because if an aura adds 10 damage, and you attack once a second you get +10 dps, but if you attack 10 times a second, the exact same aura gives you 100 extra dps.
Then, as I understand it bonus attack speed from passives and frenzy charges stacks *multiplicatively* with bonus attack speed on weapons, so having the fastest weapon possible combined with the largest number of flat damage increases ends up giving very high DPS. The caveat is the way that armor functions - it will reduce 10 small strikes significantly more than 1 large strike, however elemental damage is reduced by the same percentage whether it is large or small.
Put that all together, and you get the state of the game as it is now, where generally elemental based attacks that hit very often are the most popular.
|
Yea, ele damage scales way faster than physical since there are so many +%ele damage nodes on the passive tree and many items can roll +ele and +%ele damage modifiers. And there are 3 different ele damage auras too... there are none purely for physical.

You can pretty much extrapolate what you know is good for your Witch and apply it to other pieces. Rares can only roll so many mods, so for that bow to roll 2 different kinds of elemental damage, extra physical damage, a high accuracy value, and attack speed is pretty impressive. The only lackluster stat is the life gain on hit, which you would probably rather be life leech.
If you really want to know if the rares you are finding are any good, you should become familiar with the prefixes/suffixes page on the PoE website so that you know what properties CAN roll on that item and what kind of roll you got on them. There are often a few stats that are specific to certain pieces (like move speed on boots, accuracy on helms, etc.) that people would like to have, in addition to stats that can be found on everything that people would like to have (life, armor, es, ev, resists). If you manage to get an item with a bunch of those mods, and the mods were rolled pretty well, you probably have a pretty valuable item.

I have to ask because a bunch of my friends are now playing this:
For someone who is completely burned out on Diablo II, is there any redeeming value to this game? Preliminary opinion is no.
|
No, because it basically is D2 with more options, so if you're tired of hack and slash this won't rekindle any fire, I think.
|
Well, you could argue that a redeeming feature is the races. The system is still getting redesigned significantly so it is not gonna be the exact same as in the closed beta, but it should be pretty fun regardless. Also pvp is arguably a positive feature. PvP is still so early in development that it is rather unbalanced, but it will get better.
If it is the whole type of hack'n'slash you are burned out on PoE is not the thing for you regardless. Nor is any other game in the genre.

I'm starting to think that while attack speed is nice and being able to finish an attack and continue moving so I can kite is nice, I really want more damage and investing in a higher base DPS weapon to get good +dmg% rolls on it will just end up better overall.
Highest DPS includes attack speed. Attack Speed is a suffix while all the damage rolls are prefixs so they aren't mutually exclusive. Having more attack speed will make you do more damage period.

Added damage to weapon attacks. Spells are not weapon attacks. Wand attacks are weapon attacks though. There is also a % increased X damage (where X is elemental or physical) that increases all of that damage type regardless of the source. These affect spells and weapon damage.

Is there like a PoE wikia kind of thing for me to look up? I don't want to mess up my characters skill tree or something, don't have that much time to play so i'd rather follow a cookie cutter build of some kind.

This is the wiki. If you're trying to find a build I suggest the official forums though in one of the character forums (whichever you find most enticing). A thread with a ton of posts is a good indicator that the person has been working on said build for awhile and it will be a good cookie cutter build or feel free to post it here and ask for suggestions.
