Apparently if you keep doing expeditions and expanding the map long enough you can eventually get to oriath.

Is this a 90's era "if you do x you unlock a secret level but if you do it wrong you brick your gameboy cartridge" type of secret?

I'd say at this point I feel like the game is much improved, and there's more to do with crafting, but it's still lacking something. A week into the league it already felt like a month, despite all the novelty. I find myself logging in, doing a few maps, and closing the game again.

Mapping itself is pretty boring. Without the player speed and density of poe1, there's not much excitement to be found in that gameplay loop.

The economy just feels weird. Divines don't have much of a sink, so it feels like there's more inflation. You need a lot of expensive omens, bones, etc to do much in the way of crafting. POE1 has some of this problem, but not to the same extent. POE1 at least has the option for cheaper early crafting with average fractures and essences or reforging. I do like some of how the omen system works overall. The starting point for crafting still sucks. It's a little more bearable with Ange, but picking up a white or blue item is never going to be interesting. It ends up just devolving into paying a bunch of divines for magic items with the mod you want.

I really don't like augments. It gives me poe1 gold vibes, where they wanted to be not-d2 and not have gold, so they did something different for the sake of being different. They're pretty much all just generic boosts to some stat that you're guaranteed to have on your item, which makes for really uninteresting choices and almost no impact to crafting an item or tradeoffs about it's overall power. The tradeoff in poe1 of accepting a lesser crafted mod or trying to get a greater explicit is a really meaningful part of the overall crafting in terms of both cost and item power and that feels totally lost. Their initial premise was filling the role of the crafting bench, but now there are a thousand different runes. This system that was supposed to be easier for players to understand is definitely not that.

I partly liked the initial mapping experience. It was nice to have some direction and goals to achieve. I think the amount of time it takes to actually get your atlas passives and league mechanic passives is too long. It's a real chore to go get them all, and definitely feels like wasted time to be running 30 maps of a mechanic without the points for improving that mechanic. It also feels like wasted time to be getting only generic passives or league passives, but not both. There's a lot of QOL improvements to do around this system too, with better guidance of where to go for each of the atlas quests, better initial direction toward the masters, etc.

I'm not a fan of the 'you have everything' atlas. I like having to choose which mechanic(s) or bonuses I'm taking. I like doing different mechanics, not just doing everything on a map. I like that things have different values because not everyone is doing them when they show up. The biome system sucks; I have no interest in tracking which biome a map is in. I still dislike the lack of agency over which maps I'm running, since many have really annoying bosses or terrain with annoying pseudo-walls. Sprint is terrible. It's one of the worst mechanics ever added to a game and definitely a bandaid over a problem of their own making.

Overall, if the game at 0.1 was a 2/10 then at 0.5 I'd say it's about a 6/10 right now. It's got some decent things, a lot of bad things, and many rough edges. I still have issues with a bunch of their core designs, so I'm not sure I'll ever get meaningfully pulled into the game. We'll see what the future has in store.

I've been saying this for Poe1 for some time before I basically quit Poe1 for good due to never having enough to play it anymore.

The game was probably more fun before GGG became better at balance. Early poe had TONS of balance issues with aoe shotgun, and double dipping. Yes, maybe this was too easy at the top end to outscale the top end bosses.

But at the low end, it means with a little bit of game knowledge, you could get to the endgame content without having really expensive/top end gear.

As they got better at balance, it forced people into what, I guess, is the intended gameplay loop of grinding for currency/expensive drops. I don't think this central gameplay loops is as appealing to the average person as GGG thinks it is. I know it's the namesake of the company and all that, but I don't think a very large portion of the playerbase is going into the game going "you know what really keeps me coming back to this game? how long I get to grind before I can reasonably dps down Uber Sirus" (sorry it's been a long time since I actually played).

Nowadays you just play mines and the content vanishes in front of you . Atleast thats what it feels to me when watching my mates play it, my builds are allways too scuffed to go for the harder ubers .

Btw: Finally reached endgame in PoE 2... Just now at the first Quest-Abyss Boss and he just goes DMG immune at around 50%? Is there a trick? I stupidly let a rock roll over me and died (twice :D) but the issue was both times the same. Whats the deal there?
Is it the black cloud which I never saw or is something else going on?
Edit: Tried him a third time, no issues... Strange.

I have reached the Arbiter of Ash for the first time and I don't want to play the game anymore. I really hate this type of game design where your build needs to be able to do maps but also uber bosses because map progress is gated behind uber bosses. Yet, uber bosses have a billion hp while what you find in maps is usually popcorn. The boss is not even that badly designed, some of the mechanics are fun to learn. However, it takes way too fucking long and has so many mechanics that just one shot you, so if you mess up once you can start again, amazing. Then you enter phase 2 with a full heal from 25% health (absolute trash game design) and a double one shot mechanic with a split second window. And if I die I have to repeat through a couple minutes of phase 1 again. I'm so done with this stupid shit. The design philosophy of this endgame is really not for me. I would much rather search for 20 rares every map. And make a second specialised character to kill ubers if I feel like it.

Maybe this game will just be for the campaign for me. Just make chars, play them until maps and ignore the endgame.

I'd argue Arbiter of Ash is the worst boss they've ever designed, full stop. The final phase is probably what the whole fight should've been, especially with how the early phases turn into bait and switch mechanics for the latter. Even knowing the whole fight now and being able to one shot it on subsequent attempts, I still absolutely loathe it.

That said, you don't really need to do the arbiters, or at least not until much later. They eventually just consume a portion of the fortress' maps to give you those points all at once (40ish) at the price of not being able to run those nodes with waystones. You can still get atlas points from the rest of the fortress, or go and do league mechanic sections instead.

It is like in PoE1, you can go and do the pseudo tier 17 maps and uber boss, but you don't have too.

Most leagues I do pinnacles and ignore uber bosses and just do maps with league mechanics I like (or delve, or heist, it depends on the league). Some leagues I make a Single target nuke character and make some Uber Bosses but very rarely.

Poe2 should be similar (I just reached endgame in poe2 now for the first time).

You think the second phase is better with the circle you have to move (if not one shot) but the Arbiter blasts a one shot beam through the circle that has the same width... So you have to stay outside and hope you get in in the correct split second. A bit too early and you die or a bit too late and you also die.

Anyways, I have thought about skipping the bosses. But there seems to be story content, which I kind of don't want to miss. I also might be mistaken but a whole portion of the atlas tree is hidden behind finishing off Arbiter, no? So you can get the points but cannot allocate them? I don't like the atlas tree in PoE2 anyways. Just fill everything is such a pointless grind mechanic.

I'm not sure about which parts are actually locked off by what since you can't view it after the fact. You're gonna need to spend forever unlocking all the league passives, so you might as well spend some time outside of the fortress. I didn't touch arbiter until I was comfortably clearing T15s.

But yeah, I think that later phase is much better. The running into 8 circles in a row or dying is just a dumb waste of time and the 8 "rows" you have to move into or die is worse. I spend the whole time squinting and struggling just to see the empty area, and then there's sometimes problems where the not-actually-top-down view makes you slightly still in the edge of something. It's just non stop 1 shots where the actual challenge is visual clarity, and somehow POE2 is 10x worse than POE1's already bad clarity.

The later phase you can just sort of roll into the circle toward the end and tank a bit of whatever thing it's doing and still be OK. The problem is that the fight teaches you to run into the circles, then immediately kills you for running into the circle.

That is a good point about what the fight teaches you in phase 1. That's how immediately died in phase 2 the first time I reached it... So dumb. Idk, in phase 1 the moving into rows seems fine to me if I don't have to repeat the boss a million times. But I have also no trouble seeing it, so that plays a role. In generally I agree with the bad visual clarity of PoE2 but that's mostly due to the fact that they had to add 5+ league mechanics to every map and increase the monster density (due to popular demand....). The circles are indeed dumb, especially if they spawn outside of your screen and you are just screwed...

I logged in to see what is locked and the whole upper half of the atlas tree is locked behind completing the Burning Monolith, i.e. Arbiter of Ash. Only the very top nodes are locked behind additional fights, which I assume to be the actual uber fights.

I get that I probably need to farm more but I don't think my gear is actually that bad. My build is not good because I freestyled it but I don't think it is borked either. The game lets you unlock Arbiter with a T10 map and I have run maps up until T13 so far without major problems. I don't think the difference in HP should be what it is. But I know Mark sees that differently and I think here we just have a fundamental clash of different design philosophies that we think are fun. I cringe every time I hear Mark or Jonathan talk about what the difference between the power level of good and amazing gear should be. Which is sad because in general I agree with them on a lot of design choices.

I feel like both poe1 and poe2 really need to draw actual arrows whenever there is a circle you either need to be inside or outside of. I know actual arrows telling you where to go feels a bit handholdy, and maybe makes the game look a bit cartoony, but you shouldn't have to go to a video tutorial or get 1 hit KO in trial and error to be able to figure out which side of the circle you need to be on. It's dumb that you can visually undertand what the mechanic is, but still have to take a 50/50 guess on exactly which mechanic is being presented this time.

This would immediately solve the Arbiter circle problem, you can use exactly the same visual for the circle, only the arrows change direction for when they want you in and when they want you out.

I respectfully disagree. I think arrows are at best a bandaid to bad game design and bad visual clarity. I like the suggestion of Craton better. In general I think game devs need to find visual queues that fit within the rest of their design or it is imersion breaking. Arrows feel lazy and clearly signal to the player that this is just an arbitrary hurdle instead of something that should be fun. Fellowship did this and I didn't like it at all and that game is already ugly and not designed to be immersive but just a WoW dungeon grind simulator.
I also think they normalise one-shots, which are not very good game design. They are ok once in a while but having the whole fight based around a barrage of different one-shot mechanics is terrible.

Same here, rushing Kitava for the mystery box with a friend. I'll wait for the next big PoE1 league.

I play PoE2 every now and then, but pretty casually. The game is fun and the builds are cool, but I just can't get into it like I do with PoE1. At the start of a PoE1 league, I can play all weekend non-stop, but with PoE2 I just can't, even though I enjoy the game.

Thats 100% fair. I can see a lot of really rough edges and poe2 is not at the standard yet. this last league has a lot of great improvements and a blueprint going forward but it needs time to cook.

I can see the launch of poe2 to be TOTA and it'll be the biggest league GGG has had.
