If there are substantial passive tree changes i might be interested again but no change to the acts x3 and no change to the passive tree and i'm just not interested.
The thing is, this is an endgame update but the endgame is already the only interesting part left. Levelling is too fucking shitty and they haven't touched it in the last lots of updates other than to make it much worse with the lab which even makes you backtrack and shit.
I love GGG but I'm not certain that they are still designing their game with players like me in mind.

In the interview it sounded like you can do both. Either you map like you did all the years before or you use the atlas. Well, or both. You can't buy higher maps for the atlas though if I understand that correctly.

Hello fellow adventurers.
I've been playing D3 consistently for the past few years, always on and off, jumping in at the start of a new season for a few months then cooling down until the next season. However this season of D3 is thus far so boring and similar to last season that I want to go ahead and build a PoE char.
I like PoE because of how huge the talent tree is and the infinite possibilities it provides and I feel like I can really make some fun and interesting builds to match my style. But right now I'm feeling a bit lost because of how large and overwhelming all the new info is.
I have a low level ranger so far but I want to unlock and level a Scion as my main.
I was thinking for a 3 way hybrid tanky staff wielding melee which utilizes the dex part of the tree for mobility and nimbleness and goes into the intellect part of the tree to get the juicy bonuses to curses.
In essence I'll use curses to debuff my enemies and buff my own damage and dex to buff my mobility and attack speed with the brunt of the damage coming from strength. I want to be fairly tanky but also deal a good bit of damage.
Is my vision possible and if so can someone suggest for me the most important keystones/items to get?
Thank you.

Welcome!
I like PoE because of how huge the talent tree is and the infinite possibilities it provides and I feel like I can really make some fun and interesting builds to match my style.
First of all, just to get the common misconception out of the way, yes, there are pretty much infinite possibilities for builds and people can do really cool personalized stuff. The vast majority of these builds will not be great however in comparison to tried and true things, even more so when you don't have much experience yet.
This does not mean that these things can't be crazy fun and enjoyable but I think you should be aware that despite all the possibilities for builds there is usually a rather clear tier-structure visible in terms of what performs how well shortly before/after a new league starts.
That out of the way your first step with a fresh build should be grabbing this little tool to help you plan it. Note that this is not the final tree for the next league, there will likely be an update available in the week leading to launch. The PoE subreddit is a good choice to keep up to date on these kind of things.
I was thinking for a 3 way hybrid tanky staff wielding melee which utilizes the dex part of the tree for mobility and nimbleness and goes into the intellect part of the tree to get the juicy bonuses to curses.
"Hybrid" usually refers to a build that tries to use both life and energy shield as their defensive pool. Now that I think of it I don't think there's a word that's used for what you mean but we'll get to the idea behind it in a moment. "Dex part of the tree for mobility and nimbleness" is really not that much of a thing. There are a couple of nodes for movement speed but that's about it for that category and they're rarely worth your points. The dex areas are mainly used for crit, dodge, projectile and one-handed nodes.
Those two things in mind I'd pick a class based on their ascendancy (you'll get 8 total points there but will roll with 6 for the majority of the time early on) and their distance to nodes you want to get for sure. For staff that means the majority is in the top left area of the tree. Bottom and left side would have a bit more damage nodes, top right and right side would have crit and dodge, this is where you start prioritizing and figuring out what you value how highly. Your build needs to hit all major goals (damage, life, mitigation) with ~100 points spent, ideally a bit less. Any more than that you're entering lvl 80+ territory and it becomes really painful quickly if your build doesn't become strong before that.
Note that you will still want 160%+ max life even in softcore (HC I'd not do that kind of build much below 200%). Most builds are pretty much going from A to B while taking life clusters on the way. Plan 4+ (ideally a bit more) Jewel sockets. Ones that are 2 points away from your main path are pretty much always worth it.
And last but not least google is your friend to see how other people do similar builds. I'd be a bit weary of guides that straight up want you to use this weapon because it kind of spiked in rarity and therefor price last league. Might be cheaper now, might not be. I wouldn't plan around it.
I'm sure travis (that was you right?) will chime in on that beautiful weapon. LOL.

How good is avoidance at max level?
To tie into the agile and nimble fantasy I'm building, can I go for the nodes that raise avoidance? Like being a strength based damage dealer that uses evasion to mitigate damage rather then armor, and augmenting these strengths with curses.
This is sort of my first attempt at a build, spoilered so it doesn't take up too much space.

Also, I had no idea that staff exists. I just wanted to for a strength based warrior monk fantasy.

About avoidance: Strong defensive option, it's main weakness is physical damage, especially physical spell damage. But these weaknesses can be mitigated by item choices like Kintsugi, Lightning Coil, Taste of Hate or Basalt Flask.
As for avoidance nodes: Acrobatics, Phase Acrobatics and Arrow Dancing are all good for evasion based characters. Pure evasion nodes are generally bad. If you consider block avoidance it's a solid option but generally requires commitment and the usage of shield.
I'mma just give you a couple of good rules of thumb for buildmaking.
1. Consider how many skill points you need to spend for the build to function well. As a novice player you probably want your build to be online no later than level 75. So make sure things look reasonable with "only" a 100 points spent and 4/6 ascendancy points. Your build uses more points than there are available to a level 100 character....
2. For a life based character you want at least 150% increased life on the tree, and even more if you want to play hardcore. Your tree has 82%, consider using the search function to find life in areas you travel through.
3. When taking notable clusters it's generally more efficient to only take the amount of nodes necessary to reach the notable, rather than filling out the entire circle, and then spending those points going for more nearby notables.
4. You need to know what skill you'll be using to know what nodes are efficient.
5. Some nodes are strictly inefficient, such as beserking and master of force, if you compare their numbers to specialized nodes (nodes exclusive to a type of weapon) they're terrible. Generally not worth taking.
6. Spending 2 skill points to get another jewel socket is generally always worth it.
Here's a polished version of your skilltree. It might be more efficient if you incorporate the marauder area more, but I'm not gonna bother with that right now.

Evasion and Dodge are two different mechanics (wiki is your friend) and they're both pretty good. For SC I wouldn't worry about the differences too much, in a nutshell Dodge/Ev has certain ranges in which you can get oneshot where Armour wouldn't be while Armour is harder to get much off efficiently Ascendancies aside.
- Chaos Damage on the right doesn't make any sense, suddenly the Physical damage there isn't effective either
- PC on Block is alright if you end up focusing on block (aka trying to push for the 75% cap). I don't think those nodes are efficient if you don't and you'll need something more reliable for charges anyway.
- Curse incr DoT node doesn't make much sense unless I'm missing something
- Elemental Damage into Jewel socket nodes don't make much sense if you don't do (much) elemental damage
- Blade of Cunning at the bottom is a Sword node.
- Blood Magic is amazing if you aim to not use any auras. This kicks out Hatred and HoF for damage, Grace/Determination for mitigation, and Blasphemy for Curses. If you want none of that (which also means you have to use Curse on Hit), all good.
- Ascendancy choice is... interesting again. Am I missing some melee skill that does Chaos damage? Which skill is that? =P
- You're at 82% incr max life. Shoot for 160+ as a bare minimum for SC.
Right now that build would be better as e.g. a Berserker with cutting the right side completely.
Also what Alurr said.

Not travis, but chiming in anyways:
Hege's is under 2 ex now, so much cheaper than it used to be (was ass cheap in Perandus like everything else though).
An above-average eclipse staff is probably a better final option starting out, unless you get lucky with drops while leveling. Sadly, pretty much anything less than mirror worthy is probably going to be significantly outclassed by Hege's.
You get pretty close to Revelry on the passive tree, may be worth taking that over BM to run HoA + blasphemy (temp chain + ass mark/ vuln/ whatever)
|
I think Hege's is just a super rare drop and it was being taken advantage of at the beginning of the league with insane prices that dropped slowly. But, it's probably still not used much so they just slowly showed up more in the league and price dropped more and more.
The same thing will probably happen next league too. Don't expect a reasonably priced heges inthe first 2 weeks.

Thank you. If you are starting PoE, you should consider doing basics builds first to understand the basics of each part of the game. Also, don't be afraid when your first few builds won't turn out good, we all went through this
When choosing defensive mechanics, you shouldn't try to go overboard with many of them otherwise you won't do any damage except if you know what you are doing. I recommend maxing out one. From the top of my mind, the main defensive mechanics are - Chaos Innoculation (you can easily reach 10k energy shield but can't use life flasks) - stack a shitload of life (Kaom's Heart armor + above 200% increased life on the tree (you can easily reach 7k+ life and use life flasks) - Max block (78% max) - Max dodge (75% max) - Mind over matter, you take a percent of your damage in your mana (30% from the tree/ 10% from the Hierophant ascendancy/ 10%max, 7% reasonably from aylardex amulet) - Blasphemy Enfeeble + Temporal Chains dual curses Some of these are mutually exclusive
A staff ranger is already quite exotic for me but it should be doable by traveling to the duelist and marauder areas and pick the two-handed weapon nodes.

Lol the 48h took a tax from me. Started 17h late my scion and had to make my own build quickly since I didn't wanna redo elementalist after death. I noticed maps lagged so I farmed dried lake from 62 to 86, haha. I think I would've had good chance at demi if I started at hour zero because my build was pretty fast (whopping 230xph in lake with ssf gear.) I felt seasick after only 9 hours of dried lake but managed to get 15 hour total of dried lake. 3+85 Points don't rly hurt either. :D

JFC how do people dried lake that fast/ that long? At what level were you doing 223m xp/hr?

Seriously, being #4 at one point during the 4 day SSF is probably the satisfying that's ever happened to me in PoE, worth all the sleep deprivation hahah.

I need help with the biggest challenge in PoE - naming my characters. Especially with all these seasons and whatnot... it's become absolutely impossible to create a new character now.
|
Derive inspiration from other games "TwoHatchLurker" or "FourGateLife" or "FrostmourneHungers" or whatever there's always something that hasn't been taken especially with the right underscores inserted.

Sn0_Man, none of those suggestions seem good to me tho. Sure, not quite as bad as random string/number prefixes, junk xXx decorations on the sides and such lame tricks, and some may even be a cool reference or joke. But not a name.

I usually try to go for humor/meme based names. I feel like it has been a worthwhile life decision so far.
