For those who played the awesome game Hellgate London and miss it since the plug was pulled on online play. There have been servers up in Korea and Japan for a few months, but it was just recently announced that they will be putting up North American servers. The open beta starts June 30th.
For those unfamiliar, Hellgate: London was produced by a bunch of Blizzard developers that had worked on the Diablo series, and was widely known as Diablo 2.5. The parent company, Flagship Studios, unfortunately went bankrupt and closed the HG:L servers in February 2009.
The game itself has been revamped and updated with lots of cool new features/balance/content. The closed beta will be available early June, and I believe theres still a number of beta keys available(for first phase). So far from they have announced, it seems the first two acts will be F2P and a small fee to unlock the rest of the game. Pretty much like a demo trial before you have to pay.

I like how under game info is just steps to login. Would really enjoy videos of what has been done/revamped.

Really looking forward to this. :D But I don't know how to get a beta key. Kinda wierd.

Hmm, signed up but debating actually playing. HG:L was kinda bad, it had great aspirations but was rushed out unpolished. Many of these F2P websites with micro transaction based models create terrible games. I can only imagine the destruction korean MMO influence could have on HG:L.

Apparently the closed beta started yesterday, but it's not really closed because anyone can get in. But damn, 6 gig download.

Can anyone in the new "beta" confirm that the game has actually been altered/fixed/updated?
I bought HG:L way back when it was released and it was very disappointing and rushed. If the game has actually been improved, I might want to try it again. It certainly had potential, but EA just rushed it out the door so fast that there were still textures missing at release.

Yeah, I felt like the game had tons of potential, and I really wanted to like it, but it just ended up being the biggest waste of $60 ever. The graphics/art were awesome, the story was at the very least engaging, and the gameplay mechanics with the FPS/melee/caster dynamic were interesting, but the execution was just so abysmal that I had to stop long before I actually finished the game.

Good thing that I read and watched reviews before buying it when it first came out. I was hyped for the game because of the CGI trailer and knowing that some of the Diablo creators made the game.

The only thing that kept me playing the original was playing with mates on their servers. When that went bust I stopped playing. Playing it single player was excruciating monotonous.

Yeah, I hadn't read any reviews or anything, I just went to the store the day of release and bought the CE because I thought it was the spiritual successor to Diablo... I learned my lesson, though.

I was incredibly let down by Hellgate, I was really expecting much more then i got
I hope this is a success, because the original concept was great.

You just DL the client? DLing right now. Thought I had to sign up for a key or something. Willing to give it another shot since it's "free" right now.
Ehhh, I was DLing then I saw the YT videos and it really looks dated... I cancelled...

Me too. I was so hyped back then when i first hearing about HG since the developing team came from D2 team.

Those gameplay videos don't look much different to the original. HGL needs more than a few new features to be even close to a good game.
|
Hardcore on Elite difficulty is the only way to play.

Btw, if you're actually interested, the server seems to be overloaded right now. I can't even start the game client.

They're doing server maintenance.

Initial thoughts: From what I can tell so far, gameplay seems to suffer from lag problems (but I live in Australia. Everything lags over here), which really breaks the immersion. I'm not sure what the animations look like when there is no lag, but I don't really see any attack animation (maybe because the monsters die before they actually attack me). I never played the original Hellgate, but monsters don't really come and attack you like they do in Diablo/Torchlight. Gameplay seems easy in the first few levels, you just shoot the monsters, no real need to use skills. In every zone, if you kill enough mobs (let's say, 20 or so), a boss mob will spawn, which basically is just a mob with extra health. Kiting and shooting will let you take it down pretty easily, and you get some good equips (although I can't really tell, stuff dies to fast to make any difference at low levels)
The interface is intuitive though. I prefer to have health/mana as red/blue circles in the corners rather than a bar at the top right, and using the mouse buttons to attack/use skills. There's some modding/upgrading you can do to your equips, along with the marketplace which you can use to sell stuff to other players. The text font for chat and mob HP/enemy range could use some work though. Is it just me, or do they use the same ugly font as all other asian MMOs (It's basically the "Courier New" font)? Dunno, it could just be the localised version looking for a specific font and not finding it and using courier new instead.

I've been playing Closed Beta, and being someone who played a lot during FSS HG, I like this new release just as much. The beginning is a little different, but overall... the game feels and looks like HellGate. They changed the hair cuts to look more asian, but I don't really care. It's fun to play, and I can't really get enough of it! haha.
