I agree with everything you wrote, but in this case it's a tad different. Like I mentioned earlier, the game is to be released on a single platform (at least for now) - the PC. With the development costs severely cut it's easier for them to attain profitability, especially since the emphasis is put on digital distribution (and mainly GOG, which benefits CDPR the most). The game spent 3,5 years in development and a completely new engine has been created to suit the creator's needs - which is no doubt a good sign.
Of course, this game cannot have everything and perhaps won't live up to the hype, but after the disaster that was DA2 it could not be released at a better time - as long as it's better (which is almost certain by now), that fact alone will guarantee the game's success.

guys $45 is a lot of money

you have all got used to console prices!!!

cummon

The market for games now is GIGANTIC.

Aslo the price tag on a game really doesnt reflect the amount of work gone into it - it reflects the demand for the game generated by marketing.

the game gets a budget and it is made within that budget or it doesn;t get released. When you look at the legendary flops that miss their deadlines its invariably because they went way over budget and had to relelase a crock of shit.

by settign an initial price of $45 they secure a large nubmer of sales ... they will then drop it later so that it is also affordable in many other economies.

If it was at $30 id buy it just because i liked witcher 1, at $45 that means i cannot buy some other games that i want.

It's €50 for us EU guys from "official" sources... for some weird and retarded reason. I'll be buying from amazon.co.uk, equivalent price to US. Why can amazon do it and not steam.. >_<

I really have no money but I might actually rob a bank or something and buy this.

I bought the first game, but strangely it was the first and only game up until now that I bought and didn't finish. I found the setting, all the dialogue and the little side stories very interesting, but somehow the gameplay was a real turn off for me.

I didn't like the confusing alchemy system and the combat system which gave you now clue as to what weapon and spell was useful in which situation (obviously silver sword for magic creatures etc. and the normal ones for humans and so forth, but when do you use the fast sword, an axe etc? All worked very well and I never noticed a difference in performance in between them... then again I only got around to that swamp area which name I forgot).

The way you "leveled up" somehow also really turned me off, even if it was a minor thing. I also hated the little side quests where you picked it up on the notice board and just had to kill a few monsters. I know stuff like this is a bonus that should be ignored if you don't like it, but somehow for me it lessened the quality of the game.

I also lacked an emotional connection to Gerald himself and his aims/goals. Therefor going further in the main quest mainly served my aim to complete the game, which didn't drive me nearly long enough (played the game maybe 5 hours)

But this game looks really promising so far. I might give it a shot.

wow I felt the exact same way when I played that game. I never finished the game because of the gameplay (boring combat, weird inventory, too complex and nerdy alchemy etc etc) but never because of the awesome story/setting/feeling and the sex;)

Also I like playing mage or something similar but that game had like 4 spells if I'm not mistaken? Yes you could add special attributes and-what-not but still it felt really boring also the sword combat, while slightly better than the traditional button-mashing-action RPG alá Diablo, it's still quite boring and there wasn't too much depth in to it imo-

hope things will get better with the sequel as I pre-ordered it

It seams that for the two of you games like God of War or Dragon Age 2 are just complex enough. You should stick to those and not play "too nerdy" games...

A couple of pages later, once the thread was changed into "The Witcher 2" I posted another time (two times even I think, since I forgot that I had already posted a second opinion) and reported my experience after picking the game up again. This time I really got into it.

By the way, thanks for being an asshole. I won't report your post since it's probably not warnable/banable and I don't want to spam bad reports (a lot of mine recently weren't warned or banned, so I don't want to push it), but that kind of talking-down to other people just because they don't like something you like is absolutely disgusting.

Oh, yes. I am a jerk and not the guy that called anyone that liked the alchemy nerds. Normally I an not offended by this as I am not ashamed of my nerd/geek status (having a wife that likes me just because of that) but his sentence was a derogatory term which is even funnier since we are on a geek/nerd web site discussing games.
My comment was actually only jerky towards the guy he quoted (and I didn't read that whole post until just right now) but I assumed that guy wrote something similar as this one was so in agreement with him.

Anyways, have fun in your high morals world. Not that it will help you much in the realworld...

Woah someone is struggling with some insecurity issues...

Anywho, how the hell can Witcher 2 digital premium edition only be 45 dollars right now on steam?
Seems like an amazing price for getting the game + sound track, making of, map, etc.

Because it's not EA and they won't demand heaps of gold for any game, no matter how good it is. Besides, from the developer's point of view, retail sucks. Digital sales profit them much, much more - and in the case of CDProjekt, digital sales at GOG profit them the most (which I guess is the reason it's the only place you can get a 100% DRM free copy, to lure customers who would otherwise choose steam over GOG in a hearbeat).

As a matter of fact, EA games are usually pretty cheap here in Belgium. I never pay more than 45eur for them, including bigger releases such as Bulletstorm. Activision releases on the other hand, are ridiculously expensive.

I have a feeling Witcher 2 will have enough content to more than justify the price tag. If it's just a more polished version of 1, then it will be amazing.

The art style, view of man and story of BG2 are so outdated...yet people rightfully think it's one of the best games of all time. Posters confuse me sometimes.

Don't really want to take this further but since i was so grossly misunderstood:

Baldurs Gate 2 (BG2) art style: is not outdated. In fact the pre rendered backgrounds are timeless and most of them would look good framed on a wall.

The Witcher/Gears art style: was outdated as the game launched - stereotypical characters and monsters and a very boring take on a generic fantasy world.

BG2 view of man: was shit - yes, but it wasn't openly offensive.

The Witcher/Gears view of man: no comment necessary.

BG2 story: characters you can relate to, good dialogue, immersible world.

The Witcher/Gears story: worse than low budget fantasy movies.

Can't wait for it to be out. I feel like I cheated myself on the first one by not playing every single part of the game. Any pointers on how I should go into playing this so that I can play it to the fullest?

Loved the first game after the most annoying technical difficulties got straightened out. Combat system and potion making was strange at first but it grew on me and I came to like it.

What I liked most about the first game was the world and the feel it had, if they can bring the witcher 2 anywhere close to that its a succes in my book. The music is also worth mentioning as it was amazing.

Needs to be more hype for this game. First Witcher was pretty good.

If you order from GOG they'll apparently give you a $16 credit to cover the price difference. Mind you, it's $16 you have to spend with GOG. In any case, I pre-ordered with them (GOG) only to see that Direct2Drive is offering 25% off pre-orders, so I'll be buying it through D2D and saving the $12.
